So refreshing to hear a different perspective. I deleted Facebook from my phone & that was enough for me. I immediately felter calmer & had so much more free time. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I've used that same phone for almost a year now, and it's been really great :) However, here in Norway you CAN have two SIM-cards with the same number (or, a twin-SIM, I think they call it), so I've been using that option. That way I've been able to use the Nokia as my daily driver, while still getting all my calls and messages on my smartphone as well, whitout having to switch the SIM card from one phone to another.
Glad people like you got this phone. I myself picked up the same phone as a personal and use my BlackBerry Passport as my work phone. I carry both phones daily. Every time I place them on the table they've become great ice breaker.
I have been trying to get rid of my smartphone for awhile. I found out Blackberry Q10 is the best choice for me. It has everything we basically need, but not too smart because it doesn't support many apps. It is small, has good camera, good speaker, good call quality, full qwerty keyboard, And I can use online messaging apps like telegram, Whatsapp, and messenger for communication, and it is a 4g phone, works like a charm as an internet hotspot. The only one problem is, it can't use Google service apps like Google note etc. Overall such a great phone to downgrade from a Smartphone. But if you need something lighter Q5 is also a good choice, except the camera is a bit poor.
I'm sick of Google spying on me. 99% of the world's cell phones are controlled by TWO companies, Apple and Google. That is WAY too much power. Maybe they need to bring back analog. Remember Nextel? And "push to talk" (I liked it). Give me a phone that has just 4 things: calls, texting, a QWERTY keyboard, and maps .
You're not alone! Feels Good to breath again. There are some cities around Europe and Asia that put traffic Lights on the ground because pedestrians are constantly looking at their phones! That's how crazy it has become.
Hey Astrid, great to see you back and I quite agree that smart phones are not good for our general wellbeing 😲! Fantastic that you're trying to break away from yours... I'm trying to do the same with mine too! Good luck 😊.
I use two phones with two SIM cards - a smartphone and an old phone. I carry a smartphone on business trips, when traveling to a new city, or meeting people. I use an old phone when in nature, at the beach, hiking, walking my dog, going shopping, and doing familiar things in familiar places. I carry one or another on events, depending on whether I plan to take photos that night/day or not. It's not a drastic change, but it is a change and it feels right.
I've been using my Nokia most of the time for 2 years. You can't get an Uber with a basic phone. My smartphone is the JellyPro. It's quite small and easily doubles as an MP3 or audiobook player for road trips, or just driving around town.
A kaiOS phone would also be a good alternative for people who wish to ditch their smartphone. It has smart features like Google Maps and Whatsapp. Would be good enough for most people who want to detox.
Astrid, nice video. About you calendar, you can use a physical calendar (on the wall) write down your appointments. Take a picture of them (your appointments) now when your outdoors you have “physical” access to your calendar/ planner. So for that you can skip one more reason to use your smartphone. Good luck.
Writing down a schedule has never worked for me in all my life. I need the ability to set reminders for myself or I will write something down and never look at it again. :O But this little nokia has a calendar app. It unfortunately doesn't sync across devices.
Portability does it for me. I simply do not like lugging around a smart phone, especially in the summer when I am wearing shorts all the time. The original smart phones were small and portable, but they gradually got bigger and bigger. I recently got a new flip phone, and I love it. My smart phone has become a small tablet that stays at home most of the time. My friends thought I didn't carry a phone because I wasn't dragging one of those smart phones around. Smart phones get left behind at parties, bars, clubs, and all kinds of other places, which is very unsettling. Anyhow, thanks for sharing, and peace to all of the "dumb phone" users out there.
My solution is to have a tablet AND my dumb phone. On the tablet I have all my messengers and group chats, and my dumb phone has my SIM card. The messengers on my tablet still function with my number, they send me a code to my phone to make sure I´m the same person... but it works (whatsapp and telegram). Everyone knows that for emergencies they need to call or send a text. So when I´m on the go I just have my dumb phone, and at home I also have my tablet. Though I have to make the concious decision to leave it out of the bedroom and so on... I enjoy not having to reply to every notification or message right away, plus I can concentrate better when I´m at work or with frinds/family.
So I'm doing this now. At 38, I lived through the dumbphone era into smartphone era and can easily compare the two. I still have my ORIGINAL Nokia 3310 from 2001. Got a new battery and guess what? It works!! It's in perfect condition too. So I'm using it. My difficulty is that I used apps on the smartphone (such as banking.) My approach is this. I still have the smartphone but it stays switched off. I turn it on for using the domestic apps when I need to. I essence, it's become a hand held laptop that only gets used on WIFI. My smartphone addiction was the incessant scrolling on Facebook etc just because it was there and available. I didn't need to make any effort to pick up the smartphone but it makes me sick to think of the amount of time I've wasted on it. My little boy is 3 and I don't want to miss him playing and growing up. I need a way of not giving into this! Thank you for this video, I'm so glad there's others out there who recognise and appreciate the struggle. One of the issues is everyone else uses a smartphone, organisations expect you to use a smartphone and the world is becoming smartphone-centric. On one hand I don't want to look like someone who's constantly going against the grain, but at the same time I want my life back! I'm beyond worrying what the world thinks now. I'll choose the latter.
I did a j1 in California and me and all my mates got flip phones for the few months and it honestly was so much better. we just enjoyed whatever we were doing. I think if you can just delete your socials off your phone its a winner. having some family group chats on whatsapp, maps, food delivery, and spotify your good to go.
I got rid of my Samsung galaxy s8 plus because it was just stressing me out. I went through a box of older phones I had and selected the Nokia 6230i. I got it in 2006. I don't use social media anymore and I don't stress so much. The old Nokia lady's for 5 days. No notifications and no Internet crap. Back to love of books. I was addicted to Amazon and eBay. Great video ty.
I use a Nokia 2670 with Kai OS, doing street photography a smart phone is pocket kryptonite, and you won’t get half the things accomplished you generally would without a smart device. It texts well and has a 5MP camera with flash it’s a perfect lomography stepping stone.
My first mobile phone was in 1999 when I was 17. A Motorola Manhattan on the Orange network. Text messages were 50p!! My first real smartphone was an iPhone 3GS in 2009. At the time I was overawed by it. My last iPhone was an iPhone 6, and my last smartphone was a Razer 2. It will be kept as a tablet device when going on holiday to access anything we need on the web. Otherwise will stay in a box. My new 'dumb' phone is like going back to the early 2000's again. A Nokia 8110 4G. I do not plan on using any of the social media apps on it. Merely for calls and text. Job done!
I feel like this is the ideal way to live honestly. Still have the ability to contact people if needed, but there's no wasting multiple hours a day on a smartphone. I want to go back to a dumb phone but our society has incorporated smart phones into basically everything :/
I started to quit social media yesterday. Yes, it's still quarantine and I still need my smartphone. But I only use it for reading and watching. I'm 19 and I also want to switch to a flip phone. I realized this when I have an unbearable headache. I use social media for almost 8 years, and I think it's time to stop now. I decided to use social media when it comes to school, cause that was my teacher posted an announcement, etc. But nothing much. It's hard to adjust for now cause there's still a covid and cant go outside, but I think its for the better. I dont want to waste my 20s on crap anymore. I dont need to compare myself anymore, and start to focus to myself more.
Well done most people scared of what others think having this phone I got a Nokia 3310last November been great living in the moment more only thing for me is sometimes talking pictures
I have my smartphone and a flip phone. I use my Smartphone for work and friends and family but my family and a few people knows I have a flip phone that in case I feel stressed and need to "disconnect" from the stress I will use it.
Thank you for sharing. I''m just about to start my dumb phone journey for many of the reasons you listed at the start of you smartphone "detox". I have gone for the Nokia 105 because as cute as the new 3310 is, and I originally had the old 3210 in the late 90's and 3310 in the early 2000's, the new version does come with a camera and I'm told email capabilities in the UK. As I want to go totally dumb with the phone I decided to not go there especially as I'm always taking photo's. The whole living experiences through the phone camera lense instead of enjoying the moment is one of the reasons I wanted the super dumb phone. What you've explained about your experience is super helpful and it is intresting to see that you have gone back to a smart phone but with more self control. At the moment I'm looking at it from making it a permanent change as I too have poor self control but I'm going to keep an open mind. The withdrawal symptoms you mentioned are useful to know as well. It is going to be a massive change.
Three years later, and they still don't have two sim card service for both phones, that I know of. Please correct me if I am wrong. I am hoping for dual service on the same number too. Thanks again.
Can you please expand on what do you do with your smartphone? I mean, where do you keep it? How often do you charge it now? I too will occasionally need my iPhone for taking pictures and for Waze/Google Maps, but I’m not sure how to stay away from it or how to manage my “new” time with the iPhone. Thanks :)
Astrid, I think there is a solution to your problem. Just get a smartphone (e.g. iPhone) that forwards calls to a smartwatch (e.g. Apple Watch Cellular). They use the same number so you can simply take the smartwatch with you. And using dictation or scribbles, you can text on it too. I think that's a good compromise. You still get your texts and your calls, check your calendar, get your alarms, listen to music, but no Web browsing. Samsung has a similar solution if you're on Android.
Was literally just thinking yesterday that I need to quit social media because of the same reasons. One idea if you want the "best of both worlds" is to maybe delete the apps you don't want on your smart phone, maybe even delete any web browser so you can't access them. Then give your password to social media accounts to your husband or close friend (like he makes a new one only he knows) so when you want to log on it's mindful and you have to ask them to log you in.
See, I've tried locking myself off and keeping the apps away, but within a day or so, I justify getting the app back on. And I can get past all the walls I try to set up!! So for me, I have to physically separate from the phone. I appreciate your input, too! My friend got totally off social media and she's having a great time. She had an especially bad time because she was nonstop into political issues and internet arguments with people, but now she is doing great!! You should totally do it, even just for a week. It makes an amazing difference. :)
I too am looking for a product that doesn't exist. Got my Nokia 3310 in the mail yesterday and am getting ready to give it a go, but like you there is a few more things I would like it to be able to do with it. I am in a bit of a better spot in that I have a line that we are not utilizing currently. It will be a different number, but I won't have to swap sim cards back and forth. This is going to be interesting. Hoping to get more of my life back.
I'm doing some sort of internet detox like once a month for 5 days or a week amd I think it is not enough. I'm planning on ditching smartphone for ever and use internet only on my laptop to check emails. Thanks for inspiration. Great video.
I really think it's time for me to dumb down my phone, I can admit that I'm addicted to my phone, I heard that the average time was 3:5 hrs a day, but honestly I think I'm on my phone up to 10 hrs a day, i stay up all night watching RUclips, today I slept at 5am, my skin is looking horribly, I had dumb phones until I was 16, then had low quality smart phones until I was 19, then I had iPhones ever since, i can honestly say that after I got my iPhone, I have felt like a zombie for nearly 5 years, I'm on social media 24/7, recently I've been reminisce about the days when I'd read books and be diligent about my studies, and i feel like dumb phones are the answer, I feel like I wasted the the prime of my life, where I was at my most vibrant/prettiest/energetic and exchanged that for mindless entertainment
I worked as an asistent videoe editor, camera assistant and was so stressed out and tred that in my free time I aso just usd my computer or phone which ment I spent months of my life basically my lif ebeing on my screen. I actually had burnout symptoms even though im young but I also grew up distracting myself from my life with screens so now im rethinking my whole life. Its like the entire life I had between 13 and now is like a huge blur and I develeoped. I feel like a victim for real. Thats why i need a change now. I managed to switch to a job where its less csreen time but recently I developed a huge aversion towards media in gneral and its kinda rough because the apprenticeship im doing rightnow is that of a mediadesigner for video and sound, I just hope to minimize all the idstrcations and bulshit from my life or even make huge changes
Just bought a Nokia 8110 4G "banana phone" so I can still use whatsapp, and create a hotspot for my laptop/iPad. About the lady hands; that is the exact reason I love my iPhone SE 2016 so much. In my country 3G will be cut off in less than a year. Thank you for your story!
Have you considered the options regarding forwarding phone calls? I have a smart phone and a dumb phone set up so that I get all my calls to my dumb phone when the smart phone is unreachable (turned off) which means that the people who want to reach me can always call the number I have on my smart phone. Of course forwarding doesn't work for the messages which might be a bigger issue for some. For me though this works. I still check my smart phone daily for the messages but still this method enables me to get at least those off-hours or off-days without a hassle when I feel like I need it.
Thanks for your video!! Loved hearing your experience! By the way, what you say at the end of your video, that’s what I exactly did! Here where I live in Belgium there’s an option to have 2 SIM cards with exactly the same phone number, it’s a new feature that’s been implemented not long ago, I would check out if that now exists in the US if I was you! PS: I have a question about the Nokia 3310, does the ear speaker work well with yours? Can you hear the person who’s talking to you well enough? Cause I use a very old Nokia which is from the same era as the original 3310, but the ear speaker is so bad I can barely hear people talking when I’m calling them outside, with the wind & traffic noises etc, so I’m considering buying a modern version of the 3310 hoping that solves this problem. Thanks!
@@folksurvival Thanks for sharing! :D I just got the new nokia 3310 too about a month ago, I'm so happy with it! 😃and the speaker volume is great indeed, I guess the speakers from the old phone I had from the 2000's was just damaged by time or something.
Astrid!!! I was thinking of you today, I was reading an article on how to “properly” tag a NOID orchid and they referenced one of your vids ❤️ PS. So glad you’re doing well. I still have my smartphone, but deleted Facebook over a year ago and I’m not on instagram or Twitter, so I can relate to the withdrawal from Facebook and the need to check every 5 minutes. I think the phone isn’t the problem, but the apps, so if you deactivate your FB and the rest, would that be a good balance and tweak your notification settings? Sounds like you’re doing great! 🥰
Haha I lack the self control to delete the problem apps and never use them. I just re-install them. I'm a monster! I ought to delete FB but I just deactivate it for a month or so at a time and maybe that's how I will wean off of it.
Good video. I’m obsessed with smartphones and bought the Nokia 8110 banana phone. Intended to do what you did but lasted 1/2 a day as found text messaging way too fiddly. Smartphones aren’t doing my mental health any good and need to find other things to do like read books and actually telephone people. Seriously thinking about giving it another go and only using my smartphone sparingly for stuff the dumb phone can’t do (calendar and daily journal logs) well it’s on charge... will I swap???
Hey - persevere with the fiddly texting. If you're not familiar with it you soon will be. I can type just as fast on an old dumbphone compared to a smartphone keyboard.
I never wanted to admit it, but dumbing down your smartphone is so much better than using a dumbphone IMO. You can always set up apps like Stay Focused which helps make life a lot easier. The convenience of a smartphone without the inconvenience of not having one.
hi Astrid! I just wanted to say that i do have two sim cards connected to the same number, its called twin-sim, and is available in Norway. So i have one smartphone (with poor batterytime) and a lil Nokia.
Do you have a video on how to make wool slippers?? I have been doing a lot of sewing with natural materials and really want to work with wool. The slippers you have are amazing
You can use call and text forwarding apps on your smartphone to get around the two SIM cards problem. That way people can always reach you on your Nokia. BTW there is a 4G version of the Nokia 3310 available... You should look into getting one.
I think about doing this when I feel like my phone is facilitating too much internet use. But I also use my phone as an e-reader and a gps/map, plus for my grocery list, photos, etc. I think what I really need is an app to keep me off social media.
You can switch to a dumb phone and use paper lists and paper books and stay in town! And you can get a dumb phone that makes wifi hotspots and leave your smart phone in your glovebox in the car. Need a map? Turn on the hotspot and use your smart phone only during the drive! Ta daa! I dare you to try this for one week!
Hi Astrid, I also decided to quit my smart phone and bought also the Nokia 3310. Did you try the music player App ? On my side it displays the files in no particular order, do you also have this issue ? Thanks for the answer

Maybe they need to bring back analog. Remember Nextel? And "push to talk" (I liked it).
Give me a phone that has just 4 things: calls, texting, a QWERTY keyboard, and maps .
Spotify (my 30gb music library), decent camera and video capability. Maybe KaiOS on these would help a lot.
@@martin1649 I'm buying a kai os phone and hoping Spotify will be available soon. Until then I'm going to use an old smartphone as an mp3
I am on a hunt to watch all the youtube videos that motivates towards dumb phones just to get motivation
But this little nokia has a calendar app.
Correct and bless your heart.
Can’t beat the classics :) even though I wasn’t around back then
I did a j1 in California and me and all my mates got flip phones for the few months and it honestly was so much better. we just enjoyed whatever we were doing.
Thank you for this video , you are so right. ..👍💜Take care hugs from L.A California 💜
you are on the right route
I use a Nokia 2670 with Kai OS, doing street photography a smart phone is pocket kryptonite, and you won’t get half the things accomplished you generally would without a smart device. It texts well and has a 5MP camera with flash it’s a perfect lomography stepping stone.
Nokia 3310 Great Design Phone
This is really encouraging, I’m trying to do the same. Thank you
Thank you. I have been thinking of getting the phone.
Job done!
I'm getting a Nokia 3310 on Friday. I miss the simplicity of going through the day without ads, politics, and phonish stupid stuff.
Were you able to find a network to support 3g?
I feel like this is the ideal way to live honestly. Still have the ability to contact people if needed, but there's no wasting multiple hours a day on a smartphone. I want to go back to a dumb phone but our society has incorporated smart phones into basically everything :/
I really hope you come back!
Wait.... love your eyes 👀
Excellent video!
I’m really thinking about a Nokia 106, especially after all the big techs have decided that parler was a “threat” to the public.
Congrats!!!
Thanks :)
I"m about to trade in my iPhone for a simpler, smaller, less invasive phone. Thanks for sharing your story; it strengthens my resolve to commit!
You’re awesome. And you have a pretty smile.
Smartwatches should never be an option.
Because if smart phone I became pron addiction
What company provides service for this phone?
We share a lot of the same perspective.
We were so different not even 10 years ago. We weren't zombies and still real people.
So ironic the 5g adverts interrupting your brilliant sharing. I'm definitely going dumb. Thnks for that nudge
Really great points. It a great detox.
In my day we didn't have iphone or anything like that just a regular old house phone lol
I just preordered the Mudita Pure.
Thanks!
Speaker volume is fine on mine.
@@folksurvival Thanks for sharing! :D I just got the new nokia 3310 too about a month ago, I'm so happy with it! 😃and the speaker volume is great indeed, I guess the speakers from the old phone I had from the 2000's was just damaged by time or something.
So you are alive, my god i just found and came from your asmr channel and i worried a fucking lot
why?is she depressed?
Astrid!!! I was thinking of you today, I was reading an article on how to “properly” tag a NOID orchid and they referenced one of your vids ❤️
PS.
You’re awesome! Your husband is a very lucky man 😊
Do you not have wifi at home? Because I’d just use the laptop/tablet at home for stuff like group chat
Im moving everything to my tablet im soo excited to buy this phone. I will miss my audio books but maybe a challenge to have no distractions is good

You're awesome
Hi ! Thanks for your video ! It ´s nokia 3310 or 3310 3G ? I hesitate
Real talk 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Good for you. I would like to do the same. Also, the phone is cute!
My Nokia 6300 4g is arriving next Tuesday :D
Well Done, inspired me, I'm now getting rid of smartphone and getting a dumb phone 👍
You can use call and text forwarding apps on your smartphone to get around the two SIM cards problem. That way people can always reach you on your Nokia. BTW there is a 4G version of the Nokia 3310 available... You should look into getting one.
where?
What carrier do you have / how did you switch? Did you just stick the sim card from you smart phone into the nokia?
Good to know that, wanna try it so badly too
I think about doing this when I feel like my phone is facilitating too much internet use.
I just got the phone today. Just randomly roaming through target and found it😂😂😂
Hi Astrid, I also decided to quit my smart phone and bought also the Nokia 3310. Did you try the music player App ? On my side it displays the files in no particular order, do you also have this issue ? Thanks for the answer
