  • This week we’re featuring the stunning Rough Legged Hawk. While this bird spends most of its time in the arctic it can be found in this area during migration. Mainly residing along large bodies of water and fields. They can be spotted from their boldly patterned plumage and large broad wings and can most commonly be found hovering over fields searching for their prey.
If you’re looking to spot this wonderful raptor, watch as Bob chats more about common identifiers and where you can find them!

just saw a rough tailed hawk today in MA , eating something and perched on a tree. I used to do bird banding as a young teen, so noticed right away it had feathered legs and knew red tail wouldn't have fully feathered leg, although my raptor knowledge was scarce. upon Googling, very little doubt in my mind it was a roughleg.

The best Snowy and Roughleg flights are actually during years of peak lemmings, when the owls/hawks have larger than normal broods.
I live in northern NJ. Our best Roughleg winters are when there is heavy snowfall and they get pushed out of more northerly wintering areas like southern Ontario. So far this winter has been very poor for the species here. My best count ever was 50 Roughlegs in the Pine Island (Black Dirt Region of Orange County) area of upstate NY in Feb 2014.

Northern cardinal sounds different everywhere I go, super interesting. I have cardinals in my yard daily here in New York, but their song is completely different here - I didnt even recognize the one in this video.
