But its the law to crush each med individually. Its about time management and organization. It can be done. Trust me....it CAN and HAS to be done correctly.
That's cute that you can be so naïve about that, Nelson. These meds end up in the same place interacting anyway. When you work in an ICU environment and have 3 patients with high acuities, trust me. You milk all the time you can get. You just have to be wary about what meds you can give crushed or not. One example being the enteric coated or KCl tablets. But yeah. Most of us don't have the luxury to time manage and overload our patients with that much volume of bolus. Some don't tolerate it very well. And just because it's a law or policy doesn't make it true or truly safe. Evidence-based practices change often. What was ok today may not be tomorrow and vice-versa. Titrating drips via a protocol doesn't mean it'll always work because of specific individual quirks. So, chill out.

I am a hospital pharmacist. After watching this video, a lot of things really make more sense to me. As pharmacists, we may be drug experts, but we don't necessarily deal with the actual administration of meds. This helped me a lot.
The moment the nurse walked in and noticed the HOB was flat and did not raise it was the first mistake. Lying flat increases the patient's risk of aspirating stomach contents. Patients with an NG tube are at risk for aspiration. The head of bed should ALWAYS be raised 30 degrees or higher. Other then that great video!
God.. i was already screaming in my head when he administered the ngt medication without elevating hob. Btw, i was taught that we need to have physician's order of how much water we should flush.

Bullet points would have helped All in all better than a lot of the amateurish nursing videos on this site.

This was nice for nursing school but I assure you when I'm on the floor I never have time to give each med individually. Smh imagine doing this with all ur patients. Nursing school is so unrealistic. I'd never get anything done.
Hi what if the patient is on water restrictions. In that case we can't flush with so much of water. What should we do then? Can we mix medicine in feed? We have to crush Ecosprine which is a slow acting drug as no other option available. What to do in that case? Thanks in advance

Hi, please we all know enteric Coated drugs are to be absorbed in the small intestine, but there is a patient on ng tube how then do I administer for it to get into the right location, since enteric coated drugs are not tobe crushed to prevent the stomach content to absorb it

No more litmus paper! No auscultation either! Per ASPEN use pH indicator, like the RightSpotpH Indicator and a pH of 5.5 or lower indicates stomach placement.

Looking for a solution to HOLD/HANG the feeding tube. Care taker of the old unconscious bedridden patient is his spouse itself. 2 Hourly Feed frequency is taking a toll on her. Especially as any extra help is not possible due to corona situation. So any guidance for a Feeding Syringe Holder is greatly appreciated. TYVM
Great demo, but I would like to add some points. Ok, so while crushing or opening meds always don gloves. Shouldn't use bare hands coz ur contaminating the meds.

I'm 11 I've had an NGT twice when I was 9 and then now, I've known how to do feeds for ages but am not allowed to because im a child, watching these educates me on how nurses do it and why
Why didn't you lift your feeding syringe above the patient level? Lifting up the feeding syringe can help to pass in medicine in easily due to gravity.

I had an NG tube once in the ICU. Now I see why patients would fight when getting this done. It was miserable and I wasn’t given anything to drink to help get it down as I was NPO. I don’t remember the insertion very much but having it in was awful and painful. Nurse threatened yo put me in restraints because every time they moved me it made the tube move which was very sore in my throat and I kept telling them I was holding it in place but I was told I had periods of not being lucid due to very high fever (was admitted with over 105 degree fever and remember nothing of the ambulance or ER or even going to the cat scan. I remember the 3 tries at a lumbar puncture among a ton of other procedures in 1 day (I think it was 1 day but I swear this was being done at night but my husband was in the waiting room and never stayed at night so I have no idea as the ICU had no windows). If a patient reaches up just check to see if they are holding it in place because every time I was moved or rolled or anything it hurt. I kept asking for popsicles to dull the pain as I was on IV Fentanyl apparently
They also wanted to put in a dobhoff and I just couldn’t do it. That was about a month later while I was still in the hospital. I was septic and ended up in renal failure. Lost 40 pounds in a month due to being on 6 different IV antibiotics and antivirals
