"They're probably watching me. Well, let them. Let them see what kind of a person I am. I'm not even going to swat that fly. I hope they are watching... they'll see. They'll see and they'll know, and they'll say, 'Why, she wouldn't even harm a fly...'.."
I love all of your videos so much! For me, one of the best dramatic monologues was in the TV show *"Jane the Virgin."* It was near the beginning of season 5 after she's close to being engaged to Raphael, but then her husband Michael comes back from the dead. She's in the kitchen with her mom and abuela as she talks through how she's feeling. The monologue lasts for a little over SEVEN MINUTES and it is so perfect!!! There are comedic moments, but also lots of tears, grief, confusion, just everything. When I think of the best monologues, Gina Rodriguez comes to mind for that seven minutes.
You asked "Did we miss your favourite monologue?" and I thought to myself, 'The Great Dictator" must be in every monologue video'. That's what I am going to comment ---- and then, boom, there he was: "You the people have the power'. You surely, had me monologuing there.
Maybe Jack Nicholson's courtroom monologue in 'A Few Good Men'. So great because the true character of Colonel Jessup begins slowly seeping out gradually throughout the scene until it comes to a head in that monologue.
I think one of the best monologues is the one from SKYFALL, when Silva (Javier Bardem) meets 007 (Daniel Craig) for the first time. I think you missed it… Anyways it was a nice video..!
Thanks for the suggestion! We've been thinking about how to do a video on TV, carrying a story through multiple episodes, etc. We'll figure it out eventually!
What about voice-over? I would recommend "The story of a cheat" by Sacha Guitry, which has no dialogs but an internal soliloquy in voice-over. Or the second part of Tabu by Miguel Gomes. And The tree of life by Terrence Malick.
Yeah, we'd still consider that internal monologue. The Tree of Life is a fascinating example because the thoughts/VO is more abstract, kinda like how it is in real life.
Great, gained tons of knowledge from this channel. Thank you. Wondering, would you guys do something about flashback, montage kind of editing? I'm so keen to learn that.
@ yeah ! You can take for example John McClane in Die Hard , the art of the duo in that type of film like lethal weapon , seven , die hard ( with Powell )…
Okay, first, if you want to write the best monologue, hire Morgan Freeman!!! LOL With that aside, the best monologue speech I love in cinema is George C. Scott as Patton, his opening speech to the troops. I played it for my staff and it motivated them to do the best work they can which we all did! I think best way to write a monologue is to let the actor bring it to life when he or she reads it. Then you can tweak the lines and add emphasis or de-emphasize certain parts of the script. This is something AI can ever master, though they are trying, it will never hold up to a human's interpretation of the words to give it meaning. The single problem with writing a monologue for a character is that you don't know who it will be speaking those words. By that I mean if you already have an actor secured to a project, then the process will be a tad easier. But if you have the script and hold auditions, you will go through many people to be that character who speaks your lines. Hopefully when those of us are on the opposite side of movie production (small budgets) we can find the best actor to achieve the effect we are hoping to create. THANK YOU STUDIOBINDER FOR ANOTHER GREAT LESSON!!!
Peter Capaldi is the master of monologues and I will not take no for an answer… No SERIOUSLY HOW did he not get nominated for his Zygon Inversion War Speech?
“We wants it. We needs it. Must have the precioussss. They stole it from us. Sneaky little hobbitsesss. Wicked, trickssssy, falssse!” “No! Not Master.” “Yes, precious. False. They will cheat you, hurt you, lie.” “Master's my friend.” “You don't have any friends. Nobody likes YOU...” “Not listening. Not listening.” “You're a liar and a thief.” “Nope.” “Mur...derer...!” “| hate you, I hate you.” “Where would you be without me?I saved us. It was me. We survived because of me!” “Not anymore.” “What did you say?” “Master looks after us now. We don't need you.” “What?” “Leave now and never come back.”
The Monologue is the Best way to characterize A character with his goals, intentions and psychology in the story. My Favorite Monologues are : -William Shakespeare characters Monologues (Iago, Hamlet...) -Beatrix Kiddo in Kill Bill Volume 1 and 2 (2003-2004) -Bill in Kill Bill Volume 2 (2004) -Dr. Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs (1991) -Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) -The Joker in The Dark Knight (2008) -Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now (1979) -Roy Batty in Blade Runner (1982) -Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin in Spider-Man (2002) -Dr. Octopus in Spider-Man 2 (2004) -Syndrome in The Incredibles (2004) -The Dictator (1940) -John McClane in Die Hard (1988) -Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver (1976) -Lou Bloom in Nightcrawler (2014) -Patrick Bateman in American Psycho (2000) -Jean Valjean in Les Miserables (2013) -Mia in La La Land (2017) Conclusion: As Writing A Monologue, Consider Genre, Tone and Audience.
@@StudioBinder yeah I'm a guy who really enjoy animation and hoping to get to studio Ghibli level one day. right now I am trying to create pilot, wondering about things like finding voice talent, funding it, how to market it. Also maybe how to set up a bible for said pilot if it might get pick up.
Dear Team your video knowledgably so great. I always Love way of your video writing, editing and research. also please share VO person contact details.
The GRAVITY hallucination scene is the greatest dialogue turning out as inner monolugue scene in my opinion. It took my breath: ruclips.net/video/EThczHxvjKo/видео.htmlsi=lJ_tGBvoffAiFH6r
@ definitely and I’ve written out 64 short films so far. 8 in two years then I locked myself in a tiny house out in the woods, no WiFi or tv for two years and wrote out 56 in two years, a little extreme I know haha
I'm sorry StudioBinder, I now deffer to the Disney LucasFilm's writer's room. Their consistent production of critically acclaimed by their owned reviewers and media outlets like Variety to Rotten Potatoes, even if not popular or financially successful IP is now the standard I aspire too. I mean, look at _The Acolyte's_ dialogues! It puts Shakespeare and Popeye the sailor man to shame. As a man, I can't cut off my cleavage to show how serious I am to this cause, so you'll have to take my word for it. Now where's the gender neutral bathroom, I need to take a dump.
An absolute favourite of mine is Kevin Costner's speech to the court in JFK when he's summing up. Wonderfully written, acted and directed.
"It's up to you."
When he breaks the fourth wall! Genius.
"They're probably watching me. Well, let them. Let them see what kind of a person I am. I'm not even going to swat that fly. I hope they are watching... they'll see. They'll see and they'll know, and they'll say, 'Why, she wouldn't even harm a fly...'.."
I visualized the skull-dissolve, as I read this.
Amazing.
The end of Platoon. Oliver Stone has written some of the best monologues in cinema.
Ooh, that's a good one!
Thank you for end clip. That message was worth waiting for.
It was the only way to end this video. Thanks for sticking around till the end!

Wow, that sounds interesting. Is it on RUclips? Send a link.
The HBO television series "Deadwood" had some glorious, magnificent soliloquies. If the monolog interests you there are fine examples in Deadwood.
Deadwood had amazing writing overall but, you're right, there are some monologue gems.

Haha. We're part-time psychics over here.
The girl on the bridge ( la fille sur le pont) one of the most powerful monologue (interpreted by Vanessa paradis) I’ve watched.
Thanks for sharing! Gotta check that one out.
Patrice Leconte is a superb filmmaker. The Hairdresser's Husband (90') is great.
One monologue that should have been mentioned is George C. Scott’s opening from Patton.
One of many we couldn't include. That's a great one.
I needed this video. As usual, I'M GRATEFUL!
You're very welcome!
Very useful to understand what is A Monologue. Thank you StudioBinder for explaining it.
You're welcome!
Maybe Jack Nicholson's courtroom monologue in 'A Few Good Men'. So great because the true character of Colonel Jessup begins slowly seeping out gradually throughout the scene until it comes to a head in that monologue.
Another great example. Coincidentally, that scene makes an appearance in next week's video!
Do a video about the analyse of the shower scene in psycho by Alfred Hitchcock.
One of my favourite monologues in the movies is Harvey Pekar's in American Splendor (03') about what's in a name. Brilliant.
Now there's an underrated film! Original, heartbreaking, hilarious, and more.
You should do one on the art of making an adaptation!!!
We just might be doing one soon...stay tuned!
BEAUTIFUL LESSON
Thanks!
You are the best! Thank’s for work! ❤
Thanks for saying so! ❤
Winter Light has my favorite movie monologue.
Absolutely! One of the best ever.
Disappointed that Austin Powers' lapse of internal monologue wasn't included. 😉
We actually had it in one of the rough cuts! Such a good moment.
Love it. Feel like Rambo’s breakdown in First Blood needs much more credit!
Hmm, that's a good call.
Do a video about the CGI in film like die hard and the logiciel too use .
We're actually planning a video related to CGI so stay tuned!

Could you do a video on the process of creating an animated pilot for a indie project?
That's pretty specific! But we just might have some more animation stuff coming soon.

How do you not put Stellan Skarsgard in this video!? He has an amazing monologue in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and also in Andor.

Please translate the videos to many languages
We've been working on that. Does the auto-translate function not work for you?
Every shonen anime uses almost every type of dialogue hehehe
If it works, use it! Haha.
Why without translation.. you know that you are international
We can't enable automatic translations, RUclips has deemed them "ineligible," perhaps because the video is too long. We're looking into it.
I try to avoid it because my skill level isn’t there yet
Keep practicing and you'll get there! Writing is harder than people realize.

Andor is awesome, isn't it?
oh no, please don’t start doing the AI voiceovers. It was best when you were doing it.
There's AI in this video?
It's not AI - our guy is just that good!
This video should be called The 4 Types of Monologues. Not really much here on how to write them, just that they exist. Lacking depth.
Thanks for the feedback!
"Themself" is not really a word, fyi
Hate to quibble, but it is :)
