Yeah, even though she is the comedic relief on the show I like that this reacter is also treating her agoraphobia seriously and it isn't just a joke because the show ALSO treats it relatively seriously and actually shows the treatment steps for exposure therapy and they also show a backslide in exposure therapy which is extremely common with people with agoraphobia. they'll get to a certain point in their exposure and then something will happen that will scare them and then they go right back to square one, unfortunately.... It's happened to me a couple of times. Most recent is covid. Prior to covid I was able to go on public transportation alone every so often because I had done exposure therapy over like a years time( with the help of trusted individuals going with me for a couple of months as well) to be able to be comfortable by myself on public transpo... almost four years into covid and I don't think I would feel comfortable on public transportation anymore. I haven't gone on a bus since a bit before Covid started. So that's going to be very unpleasant to deal with once I do start going back on public transportation... And it definitely will happen as I can't drive. Pretty much no media that covers agoraphobia has covered that topic... But this show did.
I feel deeply for folks like Sheila. Sure, it’s easy to poke fun and put a comedic spin on things but the fear behind this is so potent and misunderstood, I feel. The two examples I’ve had in my life were both so angry and bitter at the world. One was super racist and just shouted awfulness from her porch. No one cared as she was elderly and in a wheelchair. Every once in a while I would try to talk to her and it never worked out til I broke her down from repetition 😂 she would literally call everyone the N word. Everyone. And I just couldn’t keep walking by thinking this was all she was. Finally when I got her to say something different, she went back inside and pulled a shotgun on me 👀 😯. Ran for my life 😂 but I always had to pass her house to go home from school. So the next time I passed by, she was there, but called me up. It was the most calm and composed I ever saw her. She proceeded to apologize 😮. I was shocked 😳. She then told me more about her story and her son came out and joined the convo. What she was going through was soooooo much more than what anyone simply saw from her porch. It was heart breaking. The next time I saw her, she screamed the N word at me again, like nothing had happened the time before, and I just simply said “hi! How’s it going today?” All she said was “I’m fine I’m fine.” And it went on like that til I didn’t see her on her porch anymore. I never was able to find out what happened to her but I will always remember that there could be so much more going on than what you see on the surface of things.
Carl is my favorite by a mile. It’s funny that throughout the series, he’s the most pure hearted one out of all of the Gallaghers (besides Liam of course). His character arcs and plotlines are really interesting and also he’s just hilarious
Loving your reaction to this show! This show can get really sad and deep very fast. Be prepared lol. Also I really love Lips story line as the show goes through the seasons... it's realistic for the real world.
