35 Observations & Planning

  • Here’s my take on how to use your observations to effectively make and implement driving plans. It’s not too complex, but this simple process is the biggest difference between “average” drivers and those who take further instruction.
If you constantly look at the vehicle in front and keep your observations very close, the danger is that you’ll constantly be relying on your reactions to stay safe. Lift your observations, try scanning well ahead, and you’ll start your driving plans earlier. This will make you far less likely to be caught by surprise by things happening in front of you.

I have found driving much of a chore until I introduced these advanced skills. It now becomes a little more fun anticipating and trying to work out what is going to happen at any one time. The commentary is also something I do. I find it keeps concentration centred and stops the brain drifting away. Great video thank you.

    Thanks for the upload.
If 'average' drivers developed these good awareness and planning skills accident rates would drop dramatically over night, it is just the tough task of trying to convince people to take the time and observe things and think 'what if' and 'why is this signs here'

I thought I was a fairly decent driver until I started watching your videos Reg. You have really opened my eyes as to how much you should be thinking and planning constantly while driving. It also adds another level of enjoyment to driving. Thanks again for your extremely enjoyable videos.

A very useful refresher on observation and planning. This should be compulsory viewing for all drivers. Excellent commentary as always and I will be encouraging my associates to have a good look at this. Incidentally I really enjoyed the talk you gave at Skipton a few weeks ago and found Advanced and Performance Driving a useful and at times an entertaining read. Glimpsed your bike outside, very nice.

No one is perfect, so even when using these skills if/when you do find you get caught out with a surprise its always worth thinking afterwards as to how that happened? What warning signs did you miss? How could you have anticipated that potential hazard? ..and then take take lesson forward for the future.

I'm glad you're back. I feared the worst when you started posting motorcycle videos and then suddenly radio silence.

Cracking as always Reg, thank you.
I'm fortunate enough to have had some extra training in recent years. It's only after that I realised how very little observing I was actually doing beforehand. Still far from perfect and always learning!

Hello Reg. what is the advanced driving organisations point of view in regards to driver assistance such as radar cruise control and blind spot monitoring

Reg, another great video as usual. I have to ask, what is your opinion on Dash-Cams and people using them to send footage to the Police?
I've watched your series on here and now purchased your as well book so im obviously trying to put your stuff into practice when driving, but one thing that concerns me, with overtaking specifically, is someone sending footage to old bill, i dont speed around like a maniac and since watching your vids my overtaking and general driving attitude has greatly improved, but im still paranoid after seeing a few forum threads where folk have been reported for dangerous driving relating to overtaking.
Im probably just being super paranoid but just wanted your opinion on the topic seems as dashcams are more and more common these days.

@James Stewart Yep, an absolute pet peeve of mine. Seen some seriously close calls where people have overtaken on blind crests & bends!

    • @RegLocal
      @RegLocal  5 лет назад

Hi Eric, yes, you can do the IAM advanced test in an automatic car.

Manual, automatic, hybrid, full electric - all OK to do the course with.

    • @happynotnormal

Eric it’s very similar in automatics as it is in manuals. The corner stone of dealing with hazards is the system of car control. It’s a five phase system. Your observer will introduce you properly but it goes information position speed gear acceleration. Information runs throughout though. For an automatic car the only difference is (no points for guessing) the gear phase. We try to avoid some of the mistakes people make with automatics, for example giving the car a chance to change gears in the right spot when we decelerate rather than allowing things to become bunched up and forgetting that there still is a gear phase. If you have a manumatic box (tiptronic / geartronic) your observer may encourage you to make use of it. It’s quite a good tool for understanding the gear phase. Good luck to you.

Summary: actually look at what is going on and plan ahead. Well I never...who would have thought to do that? Wouldn’t it be better to just drive around without looking or thinking ahead?
