Saltatio Mortis started as street musicians and by playing on medieval market (they are quit often in Germany). Besid the fact that the are playing now in huge arenas, they still attend thos markets and play for free. There is a huge community of people attending these markets, fairs, Reenactment tourneers and also LARPs (Live Action Role Play) . Saltatio is good friend with many of these guys and girls and theys are helping them creating those awesome videos. So you can assume, that every extra was from that community, brought their own costumes and armors and worked for free or nearly free. Like someone allready mentioned, Folk/ Medieval metal is a big thing in Germany, but not only in Germany but also in the rest of Europe as well.

I first heard about Blind Guardian in the early 90 while listening to their music on a walkman in a school bus! Blind Guardian are legend! They created the genre of "Power Metal" in the 90s! Most of their early works are heavily influenced by JRR Tolkien, just like "The Bards Song". They are nothing but Legend! Check them out!
Thank you for your reaction :) A bit of background: It's the first single from Saltatio Mortis' upcoming concept album Finsterwacht ("dark watch"), an hommage to German tabletop RPG Das Schwarze Auge (DSA)/The Dark Eye (TDE) for it's 40 years aniversary. The box contains the CD, a novel (one of the authors - Bernhard Hennen - is the one, who dies on the field after handing out the map), a tabletop adventure book (choose your own adventure style) and dice. Saltatio Mortis is a German medieval rock band, but they also mix in different music styles. The second single (Schwarzer Strand/"black beach") is already out, and there are 3 more to come. Finsterwacht are a line of towers/beacons in the mountains of Finsterkamm, as last line of defense between the lands of humans and orcs (those are the creatures in the video) at Heldentrutz, a part of Weiden in the Middenrealm at the continent of Aventuria. Their function is to warn the people as seen in the video. Saltatio Mortis (latin for "dance of the death") is the group trying to reach this goal in the video. The video took 4 days of shooting, with a lot of LARPers - which is why they have such good costumes. The choir at the beginning and end is from Prague orchestra. Hansi from Blind Guardian sings at the chorus, sometimes alone, sometimes with Saltatio Mortis' lead singer Alea (the blonde, bearded guy).

I'm really excited about the album. Medieval rock with all its varieties is a big thing in Germany and Saltatio Mortis are among the best-known representatives. The video for the cover of “My Mother Told Me” and the aforementioned second single “Schwarzer Strand” are also worth seeing. The fighters killed in the video are all members of Saltatio Mortis. Blind Guardian is a legendary power metal band. The naming of the band is a bit misleading, as only their singer Hansi Kürsch appears on the recording. However, he does not appear in the video. Since you always mention that visuality is important to you, I thought I would suggest a video that looks like a short film. It also seems to have given you the opportunity to be creative in post-production.

Blind Guardian is a German Power Metal band of international acclaim (and part of their members are actually from my hometown or neighbouring cities). They, too, are famous for their Fantasy-themed songs and albums, eg. referring to "Lord of the Rings" or other works of JRR Tolkien. Which is, I think, why they immediately agreed to do a collaboration with Saltatio mortis when they were asked. They can be heard in this video, but not seen. They see themselves more as musicians, less as showmen, so I think they had no business going LARPing in the midst of Winter in Southern Germany. (However, they might just have been busy otherwise). Now, some folks told you already that SaMo was initially playing on medieval fairs (what you would probably call a renaissance fair) before adding modern instruments to their mix. So up to today next to singer, guitar, base, drums, they have two bagpipes and one hurdygurdy and might use several more acoustic instruments when needed. Some of their members still do LARP (live action role playing), and all of them like gaming, so they have done several videos in LARP-fashion mostly related to video games. If you are into Vikings, check out their video of "My mother told me" (which was I think inspired by Assassins Creed Valhalla). They also did Skyrim (The dragonborn comes), "Elder scrolls online" (Pray to the hunter) and "God of War" (with Peyton Parrish) - and some more conventional videos with mostly German lyrics. Their latest video is "Schwarzer Strand", together with the German medieval band Faun. I liked it, it has great aesthetics - but it is very different from this one. Anyways, they are a very versatile musicians (and very nice folks, too, as far as I know.)

This is the universe of "Das Schwarze Auge" (The Black Eye), a pen and paper rpg I played back in the days (the 90s) Rondra, by the way, is the goddess of battle and thunderstorms. Rondra is assigned to the pantheon of the twelve gods. Her color is blood red, her sacred animal the roaring lioness. The number consecrated to the goddess is two. The aventurian Rondra temples are usually heavily fortified, the consecrated are well armed with chain mail, tunic and sword and the ecclesiastical ranks are reminiscent of military ones. The consecrated are very proud and spare no challenge to prove themselves worthy before their prove themselves worthy before their mistress. Cowardice and deceit are the most most despicable things a devotee of Rondra can imagine. Rondrians greet each other by bringing the sword fist to the heart. Sry I am a nerd 🤓

Me too, definitely, but there were practical reason for all these nocturnal scenes. As someone wrote in an earlier comment, this video had to be shot in 4 days, and these 4 days were in last winter. Now in winter in Germany, the sun sets very early and rises very late, read, daytime is much, much shorter than nighttime. Now even if they were extremely fortunate with the weather and did the shooting on probably the only 4 consecutive days last winter in which it did not rain, they decided to do only a few scenes during the day and otherwise use the precious daylight time to build the set and prepare the equipment, and shoot most scenes after dark. Which, with only 6 or 7 hours of daylight, definitely made sense. Still, I do get your point. As for the story: Check out the comments of "Hinter dem Auge" to get a bit of background information.
It's called the "Dark Watch" for a reason. Also, keeping it so dark helps disguising the fact that the orcs (while certainly looking cool) don't really conform to the lore of the RPG this is based on. The fans of The Dark Eye are notoriously nit-picky.
