The verses of "My mother told me" come from the Icelandic saga about Egill Skallagrímsson. The language is therefore Icelandic, dates back to the Viking Age and is a Germanic language. Basically a part of the language from which today's English originated.
The German singer hit it 10000% They sing in Iceladic similar to old Norse and English. The fact that the German singer hit the Icelandic tone correctly comes from dipthongs/vowels are closely related to still existing Germanic languages today, especially the old Saxon dialect that still spoken in the north sea region of Germany(and Frisian dialects) - though this dialect is in danger of extinction today.
The singer learned the islandic lyrics for this one. They did the "Dragonborn Comes" song with Lara Loft. And i think they also did one with Patty Gurdy. At least the singer is on a song with her: Kaufmann und Maid (merchant and maid) that is a colaboration of several german medieval bands and pop singer sasha, after he (sasha) did a comedy bit on tv to make fun of german medieval bands. They picked up that song and Sasha to do a complete verion of it and teach him some respect ;)
The other language is an old Norwegian dialect or an old Island language. Alea has learned it special for this song! Have a look at Pray To Hunter too. Another banger!
The duell of them is called a Holmgang, and it was the usuall way to solve a conflict in the Viking era as it followed some very strict rules. Usually the duell ends as soon as one of the combatants was hit and blood hits the ground. If they lived at the seaside, the fight usually took place on a small island called Holm, thats where the name came from.
@@DashyAndDadReacts As an addition: Here, both opponents hit (and draw blood) at the same moment. Which means, the result was a draw. The result of the "Holmgang" was seen a judgement by the Gods about who was in the right, and was generally accepted. Taking into account that the cause of the conflict here in this video seemed to be rather stupid to begin with, I think a draw was well-deserved. 😅
If you want to see more of the likes of that, you might also want to take a look into Feuerschwanz. For a start, you might try "Warriors of the World", which is a collaboration with many German-speaking folk and/or metal singers like Alea (from Saltatio Mortis), Melissa Bonny (from Dark side of the Moon) and Thomas Winkler (who for a while sang in a British Band, but I forgot which one). Feuerschwanz is a German medieval fun folk metal band. I noticed that you did some D'Artagnan already. Now, D'Artagnan is a side project of one of the two lead singers of Feuerschwanz, bordering more on the folk side where Feuerschwanz is more metal. Both bands are imho definitely worth a watch (and both have at least some English songs online, including, in the case of Feuerschwanz, some hilarious covers.)
You might wanna check out In Extremo. They are another german medival metal band but even more medival. I recomment the 2015 Loreley concert. Especially the song "Liam" and "Herr Mannelig".
