My brother became obsessed with DC when I was 15. This was our song. He would play guitar and I would sing and try to soothe our broken hearts. He died when I was 22. I listen to it when I feel alone in this world, which is often, and my soul is comforted for a time. #1 DCFC song!
you're comment is touching - its amazing what music can do for the soul. this was the first song i ever heard from dc and its always been my favorite. i remember exactly where i was in the world when i heard that kick in at 1:40 for the first time - and i still love it today!
the first time I heard this song I was sitting on the side of the road beside my first love. With creative energy shining in his eyes, he described the images formed in his head by these verses. I've never felt more privileged, or nervous, or happy than I did then, and this song will always remind me of that time. thanks for posting.
Even after all their hits, this is still one of their absolute best. Those first couple of lines hook ya in, and the whole thing is a masterpiece. Love how everything kicks in at 1:40.
Since Chris Walla left the band in 2014, the band has not been musically interesting at all. The new guitar player, is mediocre at best. It goes to show you who the musical brain of this band was, and that was always Chris. Ben is superb as a lyricist, and songwriter, but without Chris, his lack of musicality shows glaringly.
@@PeterKasen The Blue EP was kinda refreshing imo, especially compared to TYFT. I still have hope that these guys can stay good, but yeah, their early stuff was so much fucking better
one of the best albums ever created. box car is a good band, but this cd was perfect start to finish. one of the few cds I can listen to over and over.
I remember the first time i listen to this song. I thought, alright this is an interesting sound. Then 1:39 came and i remember thinking, ooh that's awesome. This song is amazing.
Holyy shit! Haven't listened to DCFB on you tube in like 2 years, i come back and to my pleasant surprise some of there older albums are actually getting recognition ! :D
I like the contrast between the first part of the song (from 0:00 to 1:39) and the second part (from 1:40 onwards). The first part sounds a bit like faded in the distance and then all voice and instruments sound loud and clear.
this song is fucking crucial. i picture a very sad story when i hear this song. i actually lived thru my own sad story that actually reminds me of this song...it involved lipstick on filters and all that....
I think: "Rolling!" "Hey, is this a cutout?"(not sure on this one) "Yup." "With you?" "Oh, no that's-" >> yeah...I'm not sure if all of those are right.
i remember reading that they recorded the first 1:40 some distance away from the microphone, and then they moved closer to give that stereo-y sound later
Link please? Sounds like a simple bandpass filter to me. But the effect of the filter being removed to allow the full range of audio to come through has a very dynamic effect.
3 people have different tastes of music. Music is music, and if they don't like this type of stuff (which i find amazing) then so be it. Don't bitch them out because of it.
Who is speaking & what is being said at the opening of the track before the guitars kick in? Before: "Oh no, that's..." Always wondered bout that one lol!
Too many hours shaved off, not enough cake tossed at friends faces. Why does it have to be a drink beer and listen to Death Cab for Cutie night, it's all T_T here.

Sorry for your loss, stay strong, you're beautiful!

What a beautiful memory to have. God bless you and your brother, eventually you will meet up again. I have faith in these things.🩵🩷
the change from lo-fi at 1:39 is spectacular.
nicotine&gravy something about airplanes was all in lo-fi this was Chris Walla and Ben throw us a curve and showing us they've grown
right ? its so good ! I can't stand how much I love it .
Rather from mono
@@matt7037 it's a bandpass filter. no clue what you're talking about.
Yes it is. Epic.... This was my introduction into dcfc and definitely my fave...
one of the best songs of all time, period.
I see you left a comment from 11 years ago as well welcome back
@@HaloDaycare thank you! LOL it really is hard to forget about this one
“My best judgement signed its resignation”
Haven’t we all been there?
one of the most important songs of my life
agreed
Same
true!
Same here kinda tbh, my first ever band covered it and I would sing.
Feels like summer is ending
THATKID YOUDONTKNOW it ended for me about 11 years ago .. i remember the exact day I heard this album haha one do the best

Agreed. Got this album cover tattooed on me a couple years ago. This song is beautiful.
Probably my favorite Death Cab album. "For What Reason" is a great tune.
i dont understand how something can be so beautiful and yet painful at the same time. it's heart wrenching but i love it.
I know it might sounds weird because it's definitely not their most complex and important song, but this is my favorite of them all
SixtiesRemake1 same, as fuck
It’s perfect in its beauty and simplicity
To me, this has the most vivid imagery of any DCFC song, along with Company Calls Epilogue. This is definitely my favorite of their albums right now.
yes!! two bangers.
still hits in 2022. i'm older and just as empty
Haunting truth.
The bass enter and drum is fantastic
It’s heartbreaking they don’t have a video for this song. This song still brings me to my knees.
I feel like it's better that this doesn't have a music video.
I have one…. In my mind.
The production on this song is most fitting to the feel.
this album cover always reminds me of wonder bread
It gives me Yoplait yogurt vibes
This song is perfect
remember that first heart break guys? When you were young and in love....brutal. Love Death Cab
Early Death Cab > New Death Cab
the Tsaritsa and its not even close

🤍 The beginning of the song always reminds me/sounds like a friend that passed. This is forever my favorite dcfc song.
Bought this album yesterday...so glad really. I was feeling awful and I just sat on the couch and closed my eyes. Amazing.
The “oh no, that’s-“ Benjamin Gibbard says before the song starts
This...now this is perfect.
To this day one of my top 3 DC songs
i used to listen to this song on repeat for hours every night...(sigh) ben's voice is magic
Top notch sad boy indie-emo crossover circa 1998-2003.
i like how interesting their songs were when they began. they still are pretty good but i justlike this kind of more.
this has always been one of my favorites by them.
one of the best albums ever created. box car is a good band, but this cd was perfect start to finish. one of the few cds I can listen to over and over.
I warn you. This song will only get more painful as the years pass
I remember the first time i listen to this song. I thought, alright this is an interesting sound. Then 1:39 came and i remember thinking, ooh that's awesome. This song is amazing.
Perfect rainy day song :]
0:04 - 0:27 Sound of sadness
Holyy shit! Haven't listened to DCFB on you tube in like 2 years, i come back and to my pleasant surprise some of there older albums are actually getting recognition ! :D
DCFC always brings it with their first tracks. This song, The New Year, Marching Bands.....
such great poetry . what an amazing album this was
I want a cigarette now.
Did you ever go get your cigarettes?
I love this song.....
My fave song from Death cab... STILL
One of the my Top 10 best Chill out albums ever
Poetry in movement,,sweet sadness....
This one of my favourite Death Cab songs. I have so many!! :]
one of my favs from death cab!
I love deathcab for cuteie this song is one of my favs from em

that's kind of the point of the song
"Talking how the group had begun to splinter
And I could taste your lipstick on the filter"
(y)
@TheLunarChannel = Just shut up. You're making yourself look like an idiot.
:) I wish I can meet Ben Gibbard just to tell him how much his music means to me
helplessly into you
"oh, no thats-- ..... Left uninspired by the crust of railroad earth..." haha :) i love this song
this song is fucking crucial. i picture a very sad story when i hear this song. i actually lived thru my own sad story that actually reminds me of this song...it involved lipstick on filters and all that....
best on the album
Story of my life, my able body isn't what it used to me.
You still have alot of life to go mane, keep holdin on
I think:
"Rolling!"
"Hey, is this a cutout?"(not sure on this one)
"Yup."
"With you?"
"Oh, no that's-"
>> yeah...I'm not sure if all of those are right.
count out.
Early Death Cab = New Death Cab IMO
A Tribute to Katie Fey ❤️
love this music
I think i just died too!!! Thus song touches a nerve in the braiiinnn!!! =D
easily my favorite death cab song. i can see why they might not be a lot of people's style, but to say they don't have talent is a damn lie.
i rushed this. we move too fast
right? Some people don't even know this exist. Probably one of my favorite albums from them, if not their best.
i usually dont like deathcab, but this song struck something
@camenzies The first listen its unexpected and then the next billion times, its like that moment we're dying for.
Spanish hair braid got the bubba gum tree lol
beautifulness.
@antiirony fine, i'll give you kudos; i honestly don't see the comparison but oh well, they are a great band none the less- my favorite actually.
Played it at 1.25 speed, and it reminded me of a schoolhouse rock song. So good.
+John Paul Hansen Play it at 2X the speed and Ben Gibbard sounds like John Darnielle from the Mountain Goats I swear to god.
how do you play it at those speeds ?
+deranged child there's a gear icon in the lower right of the video; if you click on it, you can adjust the video speed at specific increments!
John Paul Hansen THAAAANKKK YOUUU!
YO... that's sick!!!, speed it up a tiny bit and it sounds super interesting...
emo-dashboard confessionals
It's getting up there.

Agreed!
Intro reminds me of Jesus by Brand New..I know this came way sooner
i love this

I think I just died.
loovee iiT!
absolutely
Plans and Codes and Keys - all other Death Cab
so hard
Death Cab=Awesome.
I like it all the same.
Sattva Earth Goddess
kols did a sweet cover for this
Who is speaking & what is being said at the opening of the track before the guitars kick in?
Before: "Oh no, that's..."
Always wondered bout that one lol!
It's Chris and Ben talking. Chris is the one who says "Oh no, that's..."
Yeah it does sound like them, but I have always wondered specifically, what exactly is spoken right before "oh no that's"...
That's one mystery we'll never know :)
Ashley Miller;)
trifeloco
chris: (tape) rolling
ben: this is a cut out?
chris: yep
ben: is it cued?
chris: oh, no that's....
You kids have no clue... ❤ braker
This.
@nicck
hey, it's been 1 year ago that you commented that. did you know you have the highest rated comment on one of the best songs on earth?! :)
Too many hours shaved off, not enough cake tossed at friends faces. Why does it have to be a drink beer and listen to Death Cab for Cutie night, it's all T_T here.
The album leaf - a gust of
Sounds the same
Sounds like Jesus Christ by brand new
It came later
what sort of comment is that? out of two songs on an album you like this one and not the other? what does that mean??
😭😢😢😢😭😭😿
@SlyandCunning No U
I love this song, I am not a big fan of there later stuff on since Plans. I really want Ben to do another Postal Service album
Amen to that. I love roughly half of narrow stairs and a couple songs on kintsugi and blue ep, but otherwise plans and before were golden dcfc
it is called "title track"
1:39
@TyMan1229 YES.
Remind me Modest Mouse.
