TANK ERROR/CORRECTION: Recently, the lighting director for Caliban reached out to me after seeing this video to let me know that in this video, they used G-Flame units for the flames, which uses aerosol, and NOT gas like I mentioned in the video. Just wanted to throw this up here to make sure the information stays as accurate as possible. Thanks to Tommy for reaching out! 🤘
Man, it was great to watch you discover this band! I love them and I saw them live twice: 2016 and 2018, both times at the German festival "Rock Im Park". The first time was from pretty far away, sitting in the stands, but the second time was from the front row, right infront of the singer. They absolutely destroyed the place both times, in 2018 even more so than in 2016. They did a huge circle pit around the sound engineers' area in the middle of the crowd both times :D
GLORIOUS!!! Way back in high school, during the Pre Cambrian era....I took a semester of German and loved it. One thing that has bothered me about my exploration of European Metal is that they all seem to perform in English. I have been WAITING for the German lyrics!
My favorite caliban song is still "memorial". Brutal, great melodic parts, great lyrics, nasty breakdown and just pushing from start to finish. It seriously is THAT good. Check it out tank, you won't regret it ;)
very cool reaction. Great how you can empathize with a song that is not in your language. Germany still offers you so many underrated bands and songs ... I'm looking forward to more reaction videos. Great job!
Caliban is OG metalcore. They started in like 1997. Their discography is mostly sung in English for some reason. seems like it’s taken them until the last couple albums to have songs in German. So many songs worth checking out from their Ghost Empire and I am Nemesis albums! I recommend We are the many, King, Paralyzed and Davey Jones for one of the most brutal breakdowns.
A bit surprised you didn't know Caliban being a fan of In Flames and Heaven Shall Burn! Was really in to them in the mid 2000's but don't know much of their stuff after about 2010. I don't think there are many videos for you to react to of the stuff I am familiar with but regardless of reactions you should check out The Beloved and The Hatred from The Opposite from Within album, its probably my fav track by them - The album was produced by Anders from In Flames and you can hear the influence throughout the album :-)
I’m surprised as well, and didn’t know any of that. It’s crazy how much music in the scene I’ve been unfamiliar with seeing as how it’s all very connected somehow.
You should definitely do some more Caliban, they're among the absolute top - tier bands in Germany along with HSB and play similar crowds and venue sizes as them. I first heard them live on Serengeti Festival in 2010 (I guess) and the first song I actually listened to A LOT was Memories which is still among my favourite songs by them even though it would probably considered to be a bit more on the softer side of their spectrum. Of that album I also love We Are the Many, Edge of Black, No Tomorrow and Dein R3.ich. Walk like the dead, Wolves and Rats, King, I Am Rebellion, Who We are, My Vertigo, Falling Downwards (that one got Trivium's Matt Heafy on guest vocals), Paralyzed, Who I am, Crystal Skies, Walk Alone, the Ocean's Heart, BrOKen, For we are forever, Intoxicated, Before later becomes never, My madness, carry on and masquerade would probably make my list (given, too extensive that one ^^') as well. Btw, maybe Neara and War from a Harlot's mouth would be worth listening, too. I got no recommendations, really, but they fit in well with HSB and Caliban (in fact HSB's Alex did produce one of Neara's latest albums) AND, don't worry, you pretty much nailed the title. Umlauts seem to be a bit troubling for native English speakers ^^', but you definitely did it justice. The -ch seems to be another stumbling block somehow (that guttural sound doesn't seem to be existing in English), but it definitely is more prevalent in semitic languages like Arab or Jewish, so maybe that's where German has adopted them from :)
I had feeling you will like it xD Btw. guitarist Marc is writing all the music, meanwhile he's also producing the stuff in his own studio (and produced at least one album for Nasty if I'm not confused), lyrics are written by Andy (singer) I think. But I'm not sure if Marc somtimes says to him what he had in mind when writing the instrumental part, though if I remember correctly he once said he's not involved in the lyrics at all. He's on twitch (but for gaming mainly) and in one stream stated, that sometimes his collegues complain when he's coming up with new music and ask, how they'll ever be able to play this; but they practice and finally manage it. ^^ One of my favorites is It's our burden to bleed, but he doesn't like this song that much anymore, most of the (very) old songs actually. Me on the other hand had to get used to them doing some songs in German now first. Plus, I missed the interview with Matthi/Nasty, as I had some family issues that captured my mind, but got to switch right over to it now.
I saw Caliban performing in my Home City in Germany at a nice little youth Club about 12years ago. They played in Front of 20 or 25 people and they rocked their blood out 🥰 i think it was the time of their Album "Vent". "Tyranny of small Misery" is my favorite Song on this Album. By hearing to this and the other Songs of this Album you will easy see the transformation of style this Band is performing till their New Songs. I love them because this performance at this night forced me to keep it with this style of metal. Would love it if you can react to an older song of them like my favorite 😊 But i don't think there is any good Video on RUclips From their older Songs.
NOW, after Caliban, you need to check our their brothers in crime, german melodic death/metalcore kings Heaven Shall Burn (HSB). You may start with recent ones (Protector, My Heart and the Ocean) or classics (Voice of the voiceless, Blood Tears [cover], Endzeit, Hunters will be Hunted, Counterweight). They even got a wonderful Blind Guardian Cover with Valhalla. And their is a very special live video for Voice of the Voiceless live Wacken 2009. It will blew your mind. Totaly.
@@TankTheTech Well than I'm glad to tell you about "Of Truth & Sacrifice", the double (!!!) album they released this year. It got them to #1 on the official german album charts for the first time and to #2 on my personal top 3 list of metal albums this year (behind Demons & Wizards III, a side project by Jon Schaffer and by Hansi Kürsch of Blind Guardian... just to let you know...🤘😜).

It's probably one of the best metal bands you never heard off, although they are know internationally more than in our home country, Portugal. Moonspell.
