Hi, Great job SOIC team. Always love your videos and research. Keep up the good work. Regarding Suven pharma, read recently that the management is planning to sell their entire stake and focus solely on Suven life science, is it true ?
Thanks, very interesting video. So are Divi's, Syngene, Luras and Solara also focusing on CRAMS and API alone, or are they doing their own discovery research as well? Also, how likely are these businesses (Suven in particular) to benefit from any disruption in supply chain from China?
Divis is again doing manufacturing of custom synthesis of patented molecules which is 42% of their sales. The reason why they get expensive valuations and remaining is generic molecules. In syngenes case they are a complete platform as they provide Cro and CMO services. These guys don't take the R&D risk they're just a service provider, if someone buys Syngene they're indirectly getting the benefit of success in R&D of the innovator. Syngene will anyways make money if the project fails or succeeds. As Sajan sir said, Tails I win and heads I win more is their business model. Basically, if the R&D fails still service provider makes money as they provided Cro and development services for the molecule. If the R&D succeeds, Syngene stands to make more money as they have recently commenced their Api manufacturing plant at Mangalore. Now they're a complete integrated service platform for the innovators. I don't track laurus labs and solara. As found some corporate governance issues in Laurus. Cdmo/Crams market is to likely double in next 6 years, and is growing at 8-10% per annum (depending upon the geography). Why Indian crams? All is dependent on the cost of manufacturing, here the scientists salary is 40% lower than China and nearly 70% lower than Usa. Innovators save close to 50% if they outsource R&D/manufacturing instead of setting up their own capacities. Just think about it, suppose you have set up a manufacturing plant for an upcoming molecule in your pipeline. However, it fails to commercialize. What do you do with the capacity? A total loss. This is where the outsourcing model comes in :)
Coming to the China question, it's an intellectual property risk for global innovators. You can study Wuxi Pharma which is another integrated cdmo player, their mcap is north of $200 billion. Chinese disruption is good and bad at the same time. Good because Indian players will see higher interests. Bad because we import 70% of our APIs and Ksms from China. Supply side disruption of even 1-2% of intermediates can stop your entire production. As this happened with Suven in the past and Pi industries. All of the pharma guys are now focused on backwards integrating and local sources of manufacturing. Which can give tailwinds to Gle manufacturers like Gmm Pfaudler and Hle Glascoat. Nothing is a recommendation, only meant for education.
@@SOICfinance Thank you very much for the detailed reply!! One clarification - you mentioned that Syngene gets the indirect benefit of the research. Is this true for Suven too? Does Suven also have similar arrangements with drug discovery companies? Is there any difference in business model between Syngene and Suven pharma?
@@VineetJainFMS Suven Pharmaceuticals operates in the CMO space and in terms of development only helps in-process research. Suven is currently manufacturing only the intermediates and isn't into APIs and Formulations (though they have plans). Syngene on the other hand is a full-fledged solutions provider. From the discovery of the molecules to process research to clinical trials to commercialization now. Suven has plans to be a full-fledged CMO player where they manufacture intermediates-API-formulations. Whereas Sygene is already doing that and moreover they provide services for molecule discovery, development, etc. Syngene is a more holistic player I would say.
