I hated the ballad of songbirds and snakes the first time I read it, but the second time around I appreciated it a lot more. Honestly I think it’s meant to be read after the rest of the series to really be impacted by all of the connections
Yea we probably went in hoping to root for him and forgetting it’s his literal villain origin story lol but I do love the movie more tbh esp after rereading a bit of the book and realizing a slight difference in the movie that made more sense to change bc in the book it made no sense and I wish she had gone into more detail in the tributes and their background or what they’re skilled in than the other excessive details in snow’s pov
As someone who watched the movies before reading the books, the information about the deceased children being turned into the attack dogs was wild enough to blow my mind for a good minute with my jaw on the floor. Also, the death of Finnick brought me emotional damage.
I really liked The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. It's more of a character study on Snow, and it's pretty much a villain origin story, which I love the idea of. Snows not a good person and not meant to be liked, and I think thats where people go wrong with reading it, because either they try to like him or think the purpose of the book is to make you to like him (and its not) (Unsure if any of that makes sense 🙃)
At 2x speed on audio, the series is over 24 hours so it was an almost impossible task, if that helps. I thoroughly enjoyed The Ballad and hope she continues with Snow’s downward spiral into the president he became. I also loved how it was also a ‘genesis’ for the ‘modern day’ hunger games in some respects, even though it wasn’t the first year.
I ADORE these books. Like these books are my Roman Empire and thank god you finally did a reread so I can feel like we are talking about it together! lol I went and got that sweatshirt last summer when you first got it so we are TWINNING! Also I hate TBOSAS the first time I read it but I read it again and it was NUTS! This is probably my new fave video of yours! :)

This is everything I’ve been waiting for😍 Part of me understands your opinion of TBOSBAS completely. It does feel like some of it is too detailed and monotonous. BUT upon my second read I realized the point of some of the details was so intentional and genius (like focusing on every one of Snow’s meals… at first I was like why does it matter what he eats for every meal. But then it hit me - Snow gets what it feels like to have no food at home. Hunger consumes him. So every meal means that much more. So comparing that with his older, president self who goes without nothing, yet still has no sympathy for the starving people in the districts. It makes his evilness hit that much deeper.) Anyway, I loved seeing your obsession with the Hunger Games!

I'm definitely doing a re-read soon because I need Peeta back in my life. I feel like we are so different in our reading experience. I thought Ballads was phenomenal. I haven't reread The Hunger Games trilogy since the first time I read it but I remember being very vocal about how Catching Fire was the worst book in the series because it just felt like filler, like it's sole purpose was to get us from book one to book three.
I def think you would like songbirds and snakes if u read it after the original hunger games trilogy!! Maybe going back after u finish it will help understand that crazy amount of explanation!
