Thrand concludes his Deadliest Warriors of the Egyptian Bronze age series by fully testing all the Bronze Weapons made by Neil Burridge Spear, Khopesh and duck bill axe. Thrand uses his famous overarm throwing slide spear technique as well! Thrand test it against Rawhide leather Scale/ Lamellar Charioteer armour over analog ballistic gel torso.

I hope you are doing well Thrand.
Doing well should have some videos out soon
@@Thrand11How have you been man?
What really blows my mind is the relative simplicity and effectiveness of this armour. We often think that the further we go back the worse and more useless the technology. And to some degree it's true, but honestly, as we just saw, not entirely.
Yeah I know right? - all you ever hear about these days is bronze; bronze this, bronze that...
what's wrong with rocks? have rocks stopped working?
Awesome video, enjoy the Egyptian content.
Thank you, plan on a video a week at least I will do more bronze too
I love anything bronze age
Ja I as well
Armor doing what it was ment to do, saving lives while looking good.
Agreed
Good to see you're back
It's good to be back!
Thrand you've done well at covering a wide range of weapons over the years. Ive been looking forward to the Egyptian weapons for sure!
Hail! Love the Egyptian stuff!
Nice glad to see you're still back and haven't given up. Keep on doing your thing.
Hide scale huh? Wow. I would not have guessed it would have worked so well.
Regardless, I'm glad you're still putting out videos, Thrand.
. Honestly was not expecting the armor to function as well as it did. I thought the ax would leave a bigger cut and the spear would go about 2in deep. I was way off the mark. Still, those strikes would have bruised him, maybe it would have broken a rib. But... in the end, he lives.
Great video
Thanks shield brother!
I'm so pleased that there is a new video about rawhide armour, we don't see many. I'm also looking for cattle rawhide for a future longterm armour project, and currently looking for sources of this material, any leads would be appreciated (pet treats are no longer a cheap or reliable source).
Hail Thrand :)
Damn, Thrand's jacked AF!
Impresive...
I hadn't thought about it before but the shorter Egyptian spear with the ball back isn't all that dissimilar from the design of later Zulu short spears that have a ball or cone on the back end.
love this channel i was thinking of names for a fantasy rpg idea i got and i remembered thegnthrand.
can't help rn as im currently unamployed lol but I see that the house goal is not yet met 10k tho thats some help that will soften the blow for sure. Keep up man, nothing is grim in life, it's all part of the motion, live passionately, burn with life. Much love bro, love your content.
Thank you
Looking jacked, brother!
Thx
Audio could use work. It's still really interesting to see because Bronze Age weapons get very little coverage. The Bronze Age is really fascinating.
I really like the unique content like this. Thanks!
You are most welcome
I enjoy all Thegn Thrand videos.
Ah good to have you back. Spent many an hour watching your vids years back.
Haven’t seen you guys in a while, good to know you are still active!
Something that occurred to me when Thegn thrust the spear into the armour was that it was stuck pretty securely and took a lot of effort to remove - imagine if you'd landed such a solid strike on an enemy in battle and, not only had you not done more than slightly bruise his belly and alarm him*, but you'd just lost your spear too! (*though then Thrand did show that one thrust had got through and made a small cut on the belly, and he suggested that the force of the blow would have knocked him on his back, which sounds plausible. Certainly it could have badly winded him. Nevertheless, you still have the problem of retrieving your spear)
Thanks and weapons do get stuck in armour that's why the old Norse kenning for maille armour is the net of battle
Nice meeting you today and look forward to doing something together on RUclips
looking good thrand
Nice
Hope you and the family are doing better !
I hope you and the family are ok.
God speed,
I hope you fare well.
Thank you shield brother!
Glad your back ! Gotta test my new knife .
wow great
Awesome video man
Intersting, as usual.
Holy shit man I thought the Texans got you lol, glad you're back
I always loved that video with Mike Loades and the Egyptian armor looks so good and I’d imagine it went cost that much unlike something made of metal
Very cool, I wonder how they treated the leather to deal with the damage from sunlight.
Bronze Age!!! Hell yeah!! 🤘
So glad to see you again brother!
Are there any historical examples of iron khopesh? What were the Egyptian swords like during the Achaemenid invasion?
So Egyptians had guns? THESE GUNS?!
lol
Wasn’t a set of hide scale armour found in Tutankhamen’s tomb?
Yes
So great to see your return.
HAIL THRAND! ⚔️🍻
Great video as ussual
hail
How does it hold up to other eras weapons? Could a seax or hewing spear from the Dark Ages get through?
👍
Rawhide & boiled leather should not be underestimated for their protective qualities. Lightweight tough incredibly hard to cut through and inexpensive. The real drawback is over time they're less likely to survive than something like steel but if you're equipping masses it's also much less expensive
Rawhide is strong, but fully tanned leather and boiled leather are weak. Edward Cheshire performed tests against rawhide, tanned leather, boiled rawhide, and boiled leather and discovered that the tanning process to turn hide into leather makes it weak and more vunerable to penetration. Boiling leather further weakens the material a bit but hardens it. So against penetration testing, rawhide by itself was much better than leather, and boiled leather was the weakest material.
@@IntranetusaI think there's a certain way (or certain ingredients) to boil leather where it remains stiff and rigid.
@@6393dude Boiled leather can be stiff and rigid, but it is still weaker than regular leather and much weaker than rawhide according to the tests. Rawhide is already stiff and rigid and is stronger than both leather and boiled leather. IIRC, wax boiled rawhide and partially tanned rawhide retains most of the strength with the added benefit of being resistant to water/moisture.
@@Intranetusa What I'm questioning is the boiling method used in the tests you described. There's ample evidence of boiled leather being used as armor during the middle ages. It wouldn't make sense to go through the trouble of boiling leather if it was worse than unboiled leather.
There must be more to the boiling process than just boiling it in water.
@@6393dude The hide armors used during the middle ages likely wasn't leather at all. Instead, it was rawhide, partially tanned rawhide, and treated/boiled rawhide. Modern terminology confuses any type of hide armor (including rawhide) for leather even though leather is not the correct term to describe it. The tanning process to turn hide into fully tanned leather weakens the material and makes leather significantly weaker than rawhide. So to use leather in any further process is already taking a significantly weakened material - it would be much better to start with rawhide/partially tanned rawhide as the starting material to process.
Hey brotha, you still around?
