  • A 34-year-old woman whose car was hit by a volleyball-sized rock as she drove on Highway 1 through Burnaby, B.C. last week has died.
While police do not believe the rock was dropped from an overpass, they still haven't determined exactly where it came from.
Angela Jung has the latest on the investigation, and details about the driver.

BC truckers are the worst in the country. They can’t strap a load if their lives depended on it. They weave in and out of the fast to slow lane like they were driving sports cars, speed, love to corner at speed then tip and loose their loads, often drive with missing lights, park brakes smoking away, loads on fire while driving, regularly drive into things such as bridges and tunnels. And BC Transport police are nowhere to be found. It’s just another day in lawless BC.

This just happened on friday on the 401.. i transport truck in front of me was weaving around a little and i thought Id better stay away from him.. then he just starts coasting into the lane to the left of him and the car there started to move over but didnt have enough room so on went the brakes but it was too late and the wheels of the truck destroyed the entire side of the car and and the guy freaked out and just slammed his car into the barrier to get away from the wheels. I have it on my dashcam.

This is usually dump trucks, where the rock gets wedged between the duals. It's the driver's responsibility to check before leaving a pit or job site. Most of the time , a large rock will have to be "barred" out using a long steel bar. Otherwise, it eventually will work itself out as the truck moves, with the results you see in this video. The push for more loads means drivers aren't given the time to check, and sometimes, it's just lazy truckers who don't want to do it.

Yes, It's sad, and we need to seek the actual cause and possibly do something about what was described as a potential known problem. Rocks that can get picked up in between truck tires and thrown. A vehicle traveling the same way would have a load with momentum also traveling in the same way at the same speed-how would it "fall" on the vehicle behind it, unless you were almost under the rear of the vehicle or the dump truck hit a large bump? It would have to be from a vehicle going in the other direction I would think, but then how does it get over into the other lane? Overpass seems the most logical (?). 🤔

The vast majority of us do, to be fair. They don't state that a rock in the duals was the cause, just a potential one.
A rock as large as what they stated can get stuck, if one or both tires are down a bit on pressure, but you will blow one or both, pop the beads, or something similar, loosing the rock right then (if that wasn't noticed either, and the driver continued driving) before getting much past 30 or 40kph, and you'll know it's there long before that, even if it's a trailer dual too. Not to mention bending the rims in the process....
Tires are in the $750-$1000 range, rims $200 rang for steel and $1000ish if aluminum... not to mention lost revenue from downtime and cost of sending out the mechanics truck or calling one out from a tire shop.
Rubber will be visible on a rock that was in the duals as well.
Now, a large apple/orange sized rock could go unnoticed long enough to make it to a highway speed and not do catastrophic damage to the tires, but it will prematurely fail, instead of getting to a point of wearing out and getting your money's worth.
Could have came from many different scenarios I can think of, some commercial and many being private/personal vehicles and/or trailers and what's being hauled. I'm not going to detail them all out, but I've seen plenty of volleyball sized rock like they say in the video laying in people's small open style cargo trailers that only have 12 to 18 inch high sides. They use it to block the tire when it's unhooked, out under the Ramps or back bumper so it doesn't tilt while they're loading or unloading something like a riding lawnmower, quads, snowmobiles, etc.... and it is scary to see, knowing how much these little trailers bounce when they're empty. I see things bouncing our of them all the time.
Whatever came through this unfortunate young ladies glass also came from something that was traveling towards her and had come over the center concrete barrier, not from something traveling in the same direction.
I'm not trying to dismiss your statement, but between the poor quality information coming from today's emotion baiting style of "journalism" and the echo chambers of most social media, people don't get to learn about something new to their life experience.
It's getting hard for good, safe, and committed to the job to enter or even want to stay in our industry due to costs and frustrations that rules and requirements pushed on top us by the assumptions and emotional reactions people not intimately familiar with the whole industry make. And the quality, of both the drivers and the equipment that is used, is going down quickly.
I honestly hope that if you gained anything new and now consider that he rock from the duals of an irresponsible driver is not the cause of what happened here, that you maybe let someone else, that otherwise wouldn't, know that we as a majority aren't all unprofessional and unsafe but it won't be long before that's the case if the attitudes toward us keep getting worse.
Thanks for reading this if you have.

Later, the cap off a fire hydrant was found in the bed of the truck. It was assumed to have been straddled by a double tire of a cargo truck and flung forward at the pick-up. Relative to the pick-up, the cap was moving at triple the speed limit.

The stone and gravel industry is responsible for almost every broken windshield in the country. In northern BC it's also logging trucks. Yet we are expected to foot the bill? Sometimes with our lives?
In 10 years I've had to replace my windshield 3 times. The last was a rock the size of a plum launched from the top of a flapping "safety" tarp which struck eye-level on the driver's side and almost came through. Not three months later I already had a pebble chip from another gravel truck, which required repair.
This nonsense has got to stop - and the simplest way to do it is to make the loose-material trucking industry pick up the tab for replacement as well as compensation to its victims.
