      Extremely rare. Back home that happened once in 1976 to a bus parked at the garage. A cable had shorted out starting a fire which spread. It was at night and there were only two mechanics there in the shop who did not notice it . That's the only case I know of except those in high speed crashes such as the 1988 Kentucky school bus crash which was a gasoline powered bus with a very thin walled tank on the outside of the frame.

      Yes, the rate of the spread of the fire, preventing occupants to escape is significantly faster with an electric bus.
      Proponents of electric vehicles seem to ignore this risk. Unfortunately we will learn this when an occupied bus moving at 65 mph catches fire and by the time it can stop, passengers will be trapped and an entire bus load of passengers have died. It is only a matter of time. Only then will officials recognize the hazard.
      The frequency of a fire may be less however the severity of the fire will be significantly higher.

    The stats on vehicle fires are irrelevant. The question is not, how many fires occur in various types of vehicles, but how many SPONTANEOUSLY combust. Gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles very, very rarely catch fire without an initiating spark. Spontaneous EV fires are much more common.

    • @tpelton
      @tpelton Год назад +7

      agree. and not only spontaneity, but also recognizing, when they light off, it goes from not a fire, to a car/bus sized out of control arc welder, in seconds. it seems to me its only a matter of time, before we get an accident that involves a bus that is actually on the job, and it takes everyone inside the bus, before they even knew what happened.

    Another consideration is an average electric car fire can take up to 40,000+ gallons of water to extinguish. They burn four times hotter than conventional car fires, also they can and do re ignite after we think they are extinguished. Massive amount of pollution in the air from one electric car fire. I can only imagine how much the buses put out.

  • @Carstuff111
    @Carstuff111 Год назад +28

    Um, the electrical charge in the batteries has NOTHING to do with how difficult the fire is to put out. In fact the batteries can be fully discharged to completely dead (meaning 0 volts, which damages the cells anyway) and the fire will be difficult to put out because of the chemicals.... I do believe this could have been better thought out....It is this kind of misinformation that has gotten the world where it is today, intentional or not.

      The thing is batteries contain enough energy to propel a vehicle many miles without any external agency such as oxygen. When they do thermally run away the release of that energy in an uncontrolled way presumably is not just burning in any sense we know it. It seems more an analogous to an explosion which is also self contained chemical energy release but in the battery case slower given the more stable materials. Fully discharging a battery with mileage capacity to propel a car capable of 250 miles would require rapid dissipation of the same total heat as produced by a similar ICE car running over the whole journey and even farther as the latter will be lighter. The amount of self contained energy needing no Oxygen supply sitting underneath you as opposed to the fuel tank sited at the rear for good reason is formidable. There just seems no design of a bespoke battery system also as there are just a couple of thousands or more of torch cells wired together and any one of which failing is a potential disaster. Mass production manufacturing tolerances seem way less than would be required to give any degree of safety. Imagine how safe a car would be with 2,000 tiny little petrol tanks piped together supplying the fuel with any one leaking lighting up the vehicle. Working on this analagous fuel lash up system would be easier also, provided there is no cigarette hanging from your mouth, without any killer voltages to zap you.

      They also forget that EVs are still far to expensive right now to actually have the same type of owners that neglect maintenance and abuse their own cars either due to financial predicament (beater cars) or just plain neglect. An unmaintained EV with a faulty BMS or unbalanced battery pack cells is far more risky than a super old ICE that's been out in the elements for years.

    3. Thousands of gallons of water are wasted because water doesn’t put the fire out.
    4. Toxic fire fumes endanger firefighters and the public.

    Can't wait till we've got something better than stupid lithium batteries. They're still going to remain in use for years though.

      They have sodium-ion batteries and they are not flammable.

      @@Duncan_1971 I'm not a fan of lithium. There is a channel on youtube he uses a crusher on alot of things. He did one video using triple AAA batteries and went up in battery size. Even the triple AAA caused a big fire. Tells us we shouldn't be disposing them in the trash as they get crushed by garbage trucks.
