I thought both your paintings were beautiful, the old one as well as the new one, just different skill levels. I hope you do more videos where you talk about your life experiences as well as painting. I really got a lot out of this video. I feel your pain, I've been there too with horrible teachers that made me feel anxious and unable to learn what they were trying to teach me.

I remember in the 11th grade I took an art class, and I loved that class because I could just sit down, and draw or paint or do whatever we were doing that day. Then the teacher - who I admired - told me I drew like a kindergartener! It was actually a drawing I was fairly proud of. She totally wrecked my confidence and I don’t think I’ve touched any form of art medium since, and that was 8+ years ago. Watching this video made me think about starting back up, so thanks for that!

Something that is very true is that teachers influence the school performance of the students more than I would like, I mean, if you have the luck of getting an excellent teacher passionate for his work and with a will to teach the students you'll learn A LOT, if you don't, you'll feel like you are just losing your time...

Bad teachers can ruin so many good things, unfortunately. It's always really great to hear when people, especially artists, make something positive out of these bad experiences! Personally, I found that I had a lot of teachers who couldn't really get through to me - I always really wanted to understand what was being taught, rather than just following blind instructions. And somehow, I only had very very few teachers in life who were willing to explain why they taught things the way they did. I still feel a bit salty about it, and it's difficult to get over this feeling of "they just didn't make the effort"... and now I have to work hard to make the effort to teach myself and to treat myself and my learning needs with more respect than they did, perhaps.
Also, I have to add, as a fellow German I really really relate to many of your experiences you describe in your videos and kudos for your hard work and your encouraging words!! It really cheers me up every time I watch your videos :-)

My daughter was told in college that she should just get a major in arts when what she wanted was to be a pharmacist or work in something related to chemistry. That made her so mad so she changed to another University and graduated with a degree in chemical engineer. I taught my daughters that when someone tells them they can not accomplish or do something to use that as a motivation to prove them wrong instead of allowing that negative comment to hold them back. Your painting is beautiful.

A lovely scene where you can 'feel' the snow!
I also had a terrifying math teacher in grade school. I'd stand at the chalkboard literally shaking and couldn't think. In college, a few of my art professors made me feel bad about my art. For example, when I asked for feedback on a drawing, my instructor just wrinkled her nose with disapproval and walked away without a word! You really need a thick skin and a strong ability to persevere and not let too many obstacles or bad experiences crush your spirit.

What a lovely painting😍 After middle school I wanted to get an higher education on an art school. My teacher said that higher education was only for the smart kids, that have been misplaced in middleschool and that I'm never gonna make it because I was so bad at math. Now, 10 years later, I'm fine. The art school was fun and I got a great apprenticeshop and now I'm happily self employed as a photographer and work on the opening a fine art & sticker/ stationery etsy shop. Don't let other peoples small minds hinder you. You've got this!🙌

Most teachers forget how it is to start from zero to learn something and that students always learn more than one thing. Beside learning some school subjects, students grow and learn to be a human being and function. I was lucky to get a chance to see good examples of teachers as I got back into school as an adult to get my a-level. They inspired me so much and now I study art at a big art school in Berlin to become an art teacher and inspire other :D

I do know what you are talking about when you spoke about teachers. Looking back, I'm amazed I got anywhere in the world. Tried to join the swim team, but the coach NEVER tried to make me a better swimmer. Same with all sports all through high school - not one coach tried to help make me better, just told me I wasn't good enough. Thankfully, I was a top level student in academics. That got me through. That was over 60 years ago, sorry to hear teachers are not really improving. You are a great artist in spite of what happened - our maybe because of that.

When I was in high school and about to graduate (1978), we each had to go talk to the guidance counselor about what we were aiming to do once we graduated and went on to college. I told her that I wanted to go into the field of medicine. Her reply to me was "you can't go into medicine, your MATH STINKS." Those were her exact words! From a guidance counselor. Well, at the time, I took it to heart. When you're 17, things like that tend to get to you. Nevertheless, my career for the last 40 years has been in the field of medicine, science and the law! So, to those counselors who say such things to young students - I say ignore them and pursue what you love!

I really don’t know why it happens but I’m so moved at the end of the video, when you said you’ve been proud of what you learned about yourself and painting in general. Thanks Mako for sharing your stories, paintings and experiences.

    That's absolutely beautiful. 😊
I hated maths. My teacher was really patient with me, I just couldn't grasp it because it didn't seem relevant. Then, when I studied music technology at college, maths started to make complete sense!
I had a bad art teacher in high school who put me off it completely, then I picked up photoshop when I started working in a Graphics department, which lead me back to art. Then when I did my art degree I was put off yet AGAIN by bad tutors!
I didn't pick up a paintbrush again for 10 years, and now I love it - even the mistakes because unlike being at university, they don't matter, I can just try again and my own pace! 😁
