*THE REASON* the Panthers are so dominant because they are across-the-board excellent, day in and day out. Souths can never know which Latrell shows up on any given day. The injured one, the missing one, the electric one.. Cody Walker also has a lot of off days and errors on the wrong day. On their very best day, the best Souths can do against Penrith is give them a decent tussle - not beat them. Souths have to hope someone else takes Penrith out.

That is a problem with Gus… he has a go at some people but not those who he favours! It would be better if he was consistent!

Its what killed Paul green, two AFL players and numerous NFL players, who also took a few people with them via hand guns. One of the greatest players of the game, and not one thing mentioned. 360s Sydney bias is obvious, but imo the implications of the kings possible CTE diagnosis is enormous for the game…. But nothing mentioned.

Hate to say it but i agree with Gus on this. Trell is a fantastic player when everything is going well and his side is dominating their opposition. he is your typical Front runner. When your side is in a bit of a hole and things aren't working he isn't the type of player to carry the side and show them the path out like turbo,joey or JT. he relies on his freakish natural talent rather than his IQ, and unfortunately you only have so many freakish plays in your career. He doesn't actually play full back a lot of the time on the field they'll have Cody walker or one of the wingers back in cover it's why their defence is so poor a lot of the times they'll have cam Murray directing it from the line instead of the full back who can see everything it's fucked and all for him to not turn up when needed or not even be on the field during big games. For me this is the worst thing about Rugby League in general. There are far too many people that are currently employed in Clubland, masquerading on Tv shows telling us about other teams players. Stick to one or the other. We don't need to hear Phil Gould telling us about Souths players biggest problems, when his own club has far more going wrong. Maybe if he spent more time on his actual job for Canterbury, instead of just poaching every off contract Penrith player, and assistant coach, then the Bulldogs might actually be relevant again.

Penrith know how to beat Souths - they kick to Latrell and Leota belts him and he goes missing for the rest of the game. He is one of the best players going around when things are going his way or he is playing a rubbish team but put a big hit on him and he is gone. Penrith worked it out a while ago. The fact he has a 66.6% win record for Souths in finals. A lot better than most people. The Panthers stopped him. Not some other average team. There's no shame or embarrassment in losing to a team that will undoubtedly go down as one of the best defensive sides in Rugby League History.

I think Latrell has performed on the grandest stages of rugby league. Two comps for the Roosters where he stood up tall in both those Grand Finals, NSW origin series wins and a World Cup. However it hasn't happened at South yet, but South Sydney do have a tendency to fall away at the Prelims. How many times in the last 11 years have they made the prelims and lost, aside from 2014 and 2021. And like was pointed out on the panel, we don't know if Latrell could have made the difference in 2021 because he wasn't there.

Here is a classic Latrell story. It is 10 mins before full time and Souths are ahead by 4 points. He makes a classy break and the crowd goes wild. He is well tackled but doesn't like it. So here is the deep issue: what is the proper metric to rate and pay these guys? This is actually a non-trivial issue and is not football dependent- it covers many fields. When people talk about "big game" performance they are actually talking about some undefined predictor of big game performance. The mathematical structure of that performance cannot be so naive as to just cover metres run etc. When you get into the analytical detail it is a lot harder than journalists think and there are some really persistent biases that pervade the field. There's no doubt he can get it done in big games but I have never seen him shine when the best teams such as Penrith, Storm, QLD, etc, are on their game. I think that is mainly what Gus was getting at. Those Origin games which he dominated were against a QLD team far below their best as were other big games, Roosters beat Storm 21-6 not a close game.

Penrith know how to beat Souths - they kick to Latrell and Leota belts him and he goes missing for the rest of the game. He is one of the best players going around when things are going his way or he is playing a rubbish team but put a big hit on him and he is gone. Penrith worked it out a while ago. The fact he has a 66.6% win record for Souths in finals. A lot better than most people. The Panthers stopped him. Not some other average team. There's no shame or embarrassment in losing to a team that will undoubtedly go down as one of the best defensive sides in Rugby League History.

I think Latrell has performed on the grandest stages of rugby league. Two comps for the Roosters where he stood up tall in both those Grand Finals, NSW origin series wins and a World Cup. However it hasn't happened at South yet, but South Sydney do have a tendency to fall away at the Prelims. How many times in the last 11 years have they made the prelims and lost, aside from 2014 and 2021. And like was pointed out on the panel, we don't know if Latrell could have made the difference in 2021 because he wasn't there.

Regardless of what the 360 panellists think Gus is on the money and Latrell has delivered nothing for South's in the fullback position. Regarding Latrell, the guy won 2 Premierships with the Roosters. So he can do it in big games. Whether he can for our Rabbitohs only time will tell.

I have a PhD in mathematical statistics from Cambridge from the 1970s and I have worked in asset management analysing stock pickers throughout the world. I will not reveal just how bad some of that data is for the reputations of so-called "gurus". Australian football is actually medieval in terms of its data analysis and the current state of AI enables some really sophisticated metrics about performance based on video analysis. Here is a classic Latrell story. It is 10 mins before full time and Souths are ahead by 4 points. He makes a classy break and the crowd goes wild. He is well tackled but doesn't like it. The opposition fights back and does a sideline run and Latrell tackles the opponent and unnecessarily rag dolls him, A penalty results and the opposition gets a converted try and wins. So here is the deep issue: what is the proper metric to rate and pay these guys? This is actually a non-trivial issue and is not football dependent- it covers many fields. When people talk about "big game" performance they are actually talking about some undefined predictor of big game performance. The mathematical structure of that performance cannot be so naive as to just cover metres run etc. When you get into the analytical detail it is a lot harder than journalists think and there are some really persistent biases that pervade the field. The lecture is now over.

There's no doubt he can get it done in big games but I have never seen him shine when the best teams such as Penrith, Storm, QLD, etc, are on their game. I think that is mainly what Gus was getting at. Those Origin games which he dominated were against a QLD team far below their best as were other big games, Roosters beat Storm 21-6 not a close game.
