Stam Fine Reviews looks at the 20th Season of Doctor Who from 1983. Peter Davison's second season as The Fifth Doctor would feature elements of the show's past in every story. Of course, this run of shows would end up 4 episodes shorter than originally planned due to industrial action. This season featured companions Tegan (Janet Fielding), Nyssa (Sarah Sutton), and the unreliable Turlough (Mark Strickson), a guy who is the last person you would ask to mind your suitcases at the train station. Turlough is as trustworthy as a cat asked to pet sit a pet goldfish. This was the show's 20th Season but an actual programme celebrating the event would come later that year in the form of a one-off special (which is the subject of its own Stam Fine video). That said, this season, we saw the return of Omega, The Master, The Mara, The Guardians, and of course, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. Also, Daleks weren't in this season, but they do drop by to say "Hello."

I saw this video a couple of days ago, and when at work, mind idling as it does when work is monotonous, it suddenly hit me. I knew the true purpose of Tegan (no offense intended to Janet). You see, here in Australia, the is a common phrase that, for Aussies, perfectly sums up those who come from the homeland then do nothing but complain about things like the weather and the tendency for local wildlife to try to kill you (you really do get used to it :D). We call them, "Whinging Poms." Of course those ruddy whinging Poms whinge about being called whinging Poms, which got as far as the BBC, who whinged about it. So in retaliation, they creted Tegan, the "whinging" Aussie.
Think about it. Nothing ever satisfied her, she trusted no one (like she spent to much time getting attacked by the wildlife), and even complained when she leaves the TARDIS in Resurrection of the Daleks. Tegan is the ultimate middle finger to Aussies for denigrating generations of their spiritual cousins. (again, no offense intended to Janet, this is meant purely as a joke).

So to answer two things posed in this video. The idea for the Guardians to wear the hawk and dove was by John Nathan-Turner himself. He was asked this at an American convention and he took credit for it. The other thing was about Kamelion. Kamelion was supposed to appear in the second story of Season 21, The Awakening. A brief scene was filmed but subsequently cut.

Absolutely none of it was planned. JNT decided to have Omega open the season as he opened season ten and it was not till the season was all commissioned that Ian Levine pointed out to JNT that every story had an element of the show’s past that JNT went “ oh yeah “ and told the press. The only reason Terminus and Enlightenment had an element of the past is because the Black Guardian sub plot was arced through them. As for Snakedance, it was just there because Chris Bailey was frustrated with Kinda and wanted to try again.

I love these retrospectives, currently binging on these. I once had a very strange dream where I was a doctor's companion, except I couldn't speak when the Doctor was 'in the scene' and I kept waking up every time I saw a glowing orb then i' fall back asleep and continue the dream. I told my friend details of the dream and he said they sounded alot like Snakedance, an episode i hadn't ever watched, and that I may have been Adric in my dream, thus 'silenced' whenever the Doctor showed. Very friggin wierd, but there were only a few similarities to the dream when I went and watched Snakedance so that was both a relief and kinda disappointing at the same time. k, that's enough oversharing for today.

13:40 The space pirate outfits are pretty clear homages to 1950s era pulp scifi artwork. You got ridiculous bubble helmets in all shapes and sizes back then, frequently accompanied by outfits that left skin exposed to the vacuum of space. If anything those two are more fully dressed than many examples from the era - not uncommon to see a bit of cheesecake in a space bikini and rocket belt with a giant bubble helmet that left her perm unmussed, for ex.
They're not *good* homages and they look cheap as well as ridiculous, but I can see what the show was going for.

Was the list of Michael Gough’s links to Doctor Who a massive troll? We’re you maybe “toying” with us?

When you do Season 21, I would love if the title were: "Doctor Who Season 21 (1984). Old Enough To Drink."

Except in the UK we were legally entitled to drink from 18,a milestone which I reached shortly before this series aired.

Everybody hates on Adric, but Turlough makes him look like Sarah Jane Smith.

Are you joking? Mark Strickson can actually act, unlike Waterhouse and didn't have to perform sexual acts with JNT to land the part.
People ridicule Adric for very good reason, no one does the same with Turlough - other than you.
      I think that explains it.

Before I move on to the next video, I should just point out you forgot to mention Michael Gough was also the Celestial Toymaker in Season 3.
    EDIT. Oh.

I personally think that this story had many different elements to this episode and thought Peter Davidson as both the Doctor and Omega was very interesting though today the Acr Of Infinity has still many unanswered questions which have's consequences for the future Doctor's especially recent events as to the origins of the time lords if linear time is to believed from a perspective of time lords lore, and what of other closely guarded secrets of the Dark Guardians and White Guardians why didn't they ever take a hand in these stories even today and or are they so powerful they aren't in the same universe as the time lords or Omega is now possible one of these Guardians?

good lord, i wish Mawdryn Undead featured Ian. the world where William Russell took up that offer might not bemuch better than the world we're in, i'm pretty sure, but it does have Ian in Mawdryn Undead.

I have never liked 80's Dr Who. The problem is that it is so 80's which dates it more then the shows made in the 70's which were the next level up and never been bettered.

16:50 oh good Black Guardian, 'cause if you just drop it and don't say it again, then this plotline can finally be over.
You know, I seem to be under the impression that Lynda Baron has also appeared on the modern series of Doctor Who, but I can't remember when...

Doctor Who was broadcasted in Holland, but only the Tm Baker era. So it was known, but not the fact that Peter Davison was the new Doctor.
