My brothers and sisters, The Lord Jesus Christ is calling. The offer of the free gift through Christ Jesus is always on the table but the time to accept that gift is now!!!! Just think how amazing it would be if you can be saved and have your sins forgiven. I'm saved because Jesus died in my place.

I love how I started crying when the end came about the father's and mother's and then the pictures. My Grandfather on my Mom's side recently died this year. He was a Preacher at Longs Bend Missionary Baptist Church in Rogersville Tennessee and he was the one who introduced me to Bill and Gloria Gaither from the Gaither Group and also Chuck Wagon Gang. I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE MUSIC SINCE THEN. I miss him. He baptized many people. My Mom included. And he will be missed.

I looked it up, and it was first published in 1867 but is probably older than that. It is either from Appalachia or is a black spiritual or both.

Putting aside the religious aspect of this performance, this is a mindblowing magnificent and powerful song. I don't know, John... I don't see how it could still be a "magnificent and powerful song" if you're "putting aside the religious aspect." If they were just sitting there singing: "peanut butter, yummy peanut butter" with the exact same vocal/musical aesthetic, I DON'T think it would be powerful at all. People would laugh and dismiss it as pure silliness. The music is here is rather simple and straight-forward, but the POWER comes from all those believers gathered in one place believing ardently and passionately in everything they're saying/singing (a 'Jesus freak' like me would therefore attribute said power to the Holy Spirit). Give credit where it's due, I say. I guess I don't get a lot of folks who say they love gospel music, but not the gospel. That just makes NO sense whatsoever to me.

+Jonathan Kupper I disagree. Sure, it is probably more powerful if you are a devout believer, which I am not, however that doesn't give you the "rights" to enjoy the song. You can compare it to love songs or break-up songs. If am not in love nor gone through a break-up, does that mean I can't enjoy songs that tell you about these things? One criteria of a good song is that it takes you in and makes you believe and feel what the singer is singing, not that you completely agree with the lyrics.
Amen, the Holy Spirit is what gives the song its power. It shines through even to non believers

My understanding is that it’s not a “gospel” song. It’s a song that came directly out of American slavery.

Beautiful gospel song! I heard this for the first time at the end of The Handmaid's Tale, S3E4. As a singer myself, I listened for a few minutes, then filled in a bass part to sing along. I found myself wishing I could grab a mic and join in! Took me back to my old church choir days as a kid.

The core element is the beauty of a song of this song and what it means - it shows a getting together at the river where people are being baptised. and accepting Jesus Christ as their savior. nothing more need be said
