Netanyahu's 'unity' cabinet is fracturing amid declining approval ratings and electoral uncertainty. Disputes over drafting ultra-Orthodox Jews, internal rivalries, war strategy disagreements, and strained US relations threaten his leadership.

This has to be an exception when desiring equality. We're talking about a hyper militarized society actively engaged in atrocities and in desperate need of more conscripts to continue on that path.
And no, a lot of these people are not settlers and are strangely pacifistic believing that this violence would stop if all Israelis turned to prayer instead of war. It's being rapidly eroded, of course, but adding them to the draft will only speed up that process.

Some key context which is missing here: this exemption comes from early in Israel's modern history, when the yeshiva community had been almost destroyed during the Holocaust. The provision for a small number of students to be exempted from military service is very different to the current situation. As you say Haredim make up 13% of the population and are likely to grow significantly, so even before this war, this was a serious concern for the army and a country where everyone else serves. Also to be clear national service does not necessarily mean front line soldiers, there are many technical, medical and non combat roles they could fill.

Well, given that the Haredi population is increasing due to their high birth rate, the burden on the rest of Israeli society will reach an unavoidable tipping point where they will have to decide their status. Their lack of military service also becomes increasingly difficult to uphold.
It's not a whim or a distraction; it is a problem that will become unmanageable: it's estimated that around 45-50% of Israeli citizens are exempt from compulsory military service due to various factors, including being Arab citizens, ultra-Orthodox Jews, Israeli Druze with certain exemptions, Israeli Bedouins, and individuals with physical or mental disabilities.
So, Israel is close to having more than half of its population exempted from military service while being a country attacked on several fronts (and with the risk of having bigger players joining the fight). And that can't work as a strategy for the future.

The Netanyahu-Haredi connection was always his one weakness in recent years. That's the reason for all those elections and with the war it became way worse.
    - When the war started many reservists were called, those same reservists are the backbone of the economy. The need for reservists partially arise from the fact that 45k Haredis of the appropriate age are not in the IDF.
    - Haredis tend to depend on the government dole and don't work that much, especially their men so they didn't rush to at least partially fill the economic roles of those that were called.
    - To fund the war there is a significant raising of taxes and there are cuts to various things like infrastructure spending. Haredis are among those that didn't had cuts to their budgets due to Netanyahu using them to prevent elections and suffering the consequences of his decisions. This is the same pattern that happened during COVID btw.

It's not a war, palestine (in this case gaza) doesn't have an army (only resistance fighters), and has been occupied by Israel since 1967, and before someone says "but Israel withdrew in 2005!" you're right, they removed soldiers and settlements from gaza, but they still controlled all of the borders, land, air, and sea. Gaza has often been described as the largest open air prison and this is an accurate description, palestinians cannot freely leave or enter gaza as they will, they need permission from Israel, they cannot freely trade with the outside world, and Israel has been actively working against palestinians establishing a palestinian state (working against the two state solution) which even then is a suboptimal solution. What is happening in gaza is no war, its an attack of gaza, its an attack on innocent civilians (babies, mothers & women, children), its genocide, it's ethnic cleansing. To call it a war is an insult. Call it what it is, and even "Attack on gaza" or "Invasion of the gaza strip" would be far more accurate than to say a "war".
More and more lately I have been incredibly disappointed with how TLDR is reporting this kind of news. It's a dislike from me.

    Remember two things:
    1. What Netanyahu represents, the politics of fear and paranoia, and that of a vision of an Israeli ethnostate without tolerance, are larger problems in Israeli society that will not go away with Netanyahu.
    2. Netanyahu desperately will try to cling onto power. In part, to understand this, you have to know about the legacy of a very revered man in Orthodox Judaism Menachem Mendel Schneerson aka The Rebbe, so revered some even believe he was the Messiah (visit Brooklyn you'll see it). Apparently, the Rebbe once told Netanyahu he would be the one who welcomes the Messiah...
So we're looking at a man how views his position of power as a religious mission, it's going to be messy whatever happens

I guess the haredim issue was always going to eventually cause problems. If there is a portion of your demographic that is growing rapidly faster than the rest (and the haredim have) that has to be subsidized, at some point the other parts of the demographics will start to question this, causing problems that need to be sorted out. And, I guess, the "eventually" has now become "now"

A beautiful irony that Gantz makes an unsanctioned trip to the US, upsetting Netanyahu, the way that Netanyahu spoke to Congress during the Obama administration...without the invitation of the Obama administration.

This guy is virtually the only reason why our opposition here in Hungary sometimes takes a more pro-Palestinian stance when discussing this issue (what I mean by that is they are usually neutral and are DEFINITELY NOT pro-Hamas, condemning them at all options, but still often call out the things Israel does wrong and the suffering of the Palestinian people, usually painting this as a two-side issue with more focus on Palestinians than most Western news outlets).
This is especially weird, as our opposition is really pro-West in most cases and is very positive about the USA, yet when it comes to this issue, they are way more nuanced and are way more willing to call out Israel (when they are in the wrong). And it's not hard to see why as Orbán and Netanyahu have very good relations, and from our perspective here, they follow some eerily similar patterns. Same issues with corruption, same distractions from it (usually using the same group for distraction), and same authoritarian tendencies. They are surprisingly very supportive of each other, which is strange given how anti-West our government is.

Trump, Orban, Netanyahu, etc.. They're all corrupt wannabe oligarchs. They all share same xenophobic, narrowminded narcissistic views that they are the best people in the world. Which is why they get along, because their interests are aligned. But if the world had only 3 leaders, Trump, Orban and Netanyahu, they would go to war against each other over night, because there can only be *one* at the top. This is why nationalist governments don't work in the long run, they always result in conflict, starting with neighbors and then expanding to the continent, and then expanding to the world. The more people elect these psychopats, the more war will emerge around the globe.

Yeah another gift has given us. He has taken political sides in several countries around the world including the US (why do you think the Democrat party is so pissrd with Israel lol)

The far-right being allied with Israel is legitimately like a very weird fever dream. I have no idea why the sides in this war, both for Israel and Palestine, are so strange.

Oh, my heart is absolutely breaking for the fundamentalists who want all the violent domination of war but refuse to participate. Welcome to a world of consequences. If you want to shed innocent blood for your deity, then stain your hands and wear them with pride. We'll judge you for who you really are.
