    Back up mean to provide support not go back like what you said !????!!!

    • @engvidAlex
      @engvidAlex  3 года назад

      Phrasal verbs often have multiple meanings. You’re correct in saying that “to back someone up” means to support them in something, while “to back up” means to move back.
      “If you decide to quit your job, I’ll back you up.”

    Hi, Alex, my name is Natalya.
    This is the quote of the quiz for this lesson:
    *******************************
    Trust me. You don’t want to mess with me. Back off.
    *******************************
    In this case “back off” is a correct answer. But, in my opinion. it seems a little bit unreasonable, if one person says all these sentences. Can you explain me the context?
    Thank you.

  • @bfiorella

    As a native English speaker this video is fascinating! Didn't know if it would be helpful to add that "back up" can also mean "wait, let's go back to what you/I were saying a second/minute ago." It's usually not just "back up" in that case, though, usually it's something like, "Wait, back up," if someone said something remarkable that you want to be the new topic of conversation (usually if you didn't notice they'd said it for a few moments - if you noticed immediately it would probably be, "Wait, hold up").
    Alternately, if you're telling a story or giving a presentation on a topic, and you want to circle back to something you'd said earlier, you might say, "Let's back up for a moment."
    "Back up" and "backing up" is also common terminology for putting a car in reverse.

    I have been wondering for forever.
    What would be a polite way of "shut up"
    I know about "lower voice" but it doesn't refer to stop talking?

    • @ciaranlittle38
      @ciaranlittle38 5 лет назад

      Hmm, I'd probably say "Hang on, hang on, hold on for a moment, please." and then either explain my request for them to be quiet and or say what I intend once I've been given space to talk. The "hold on" part relates to the current speaker whom you're trying to stop talking, you're asking them to "hold on" to whatever they're saying and wait.

I'm asking this because ,according to Word Reference, move over means "mover el culo" in Spanish.
