You confuse honor with loyalty. Honor is rooted in self interest. Loyalty is rooted in the interest of others. Selfish vs. Selfless... most are 1 or the other. But some can both.
I was looking for videos explaining this whole deal behind the Shogun series and none did it as good as this. It's the art that you incoporated that made the explanation way more dynamic and captured my attention. The other videos seemed like the person, while well intentioned, was reading a wikipedia article to me.
"I have lived and fought through many wars...witnessed their results... The foulest of all being how they sever the bonds that unite us. It is time I changed that. famous shoguns Minamoto no Yoritomo Minamoto no Yoritomo is largely considered to be the first shogun in Japan’s history. He earned the title of shogun and all of its power after defeating the rival Taira clan in the Genpei War. He was the first to turn the title of shogun into a political system called the shogunate. His version of the shogunate included an all-powerful shogun, private samurai armies who held some power, and an emperor who served as a figurehead. Yoritomo’s version of the shogunate would continue relatively unchanged until the 1800s. He based his new government in Kamakura. The Kamakura period lasted from 1192 to 1333. Ashikaga Takauji Ashikaga Takauji was the first shogun of the Ashikaga clan. His reign from 1336 to 1358 marks the start of the Muromachi period. This shogun is remembered as being brave, merciful, and generous. He served as the general of the Kamakura shogunate until he decided to join Emperor Go-Daigo in his fight for the throne. After much conflict, Takauji gave himself the title of shogun. He installed a Northern Court emperor in opposition to the Southern Court that existed during this time and set off a conflict that would continue for almost 60 years. This Northern and Southern Court Period would come to an end with Takauji’s son. Ashikaga Yoshimitsu The second Ashikaga shogun was Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. He ruled from 1368 to 1394 and became shogun at age ten. Yoshimitsu was the third son of Takauji but was the oldest to survive. He is credited with resolving the conflicts of the Northern and Southern Courts Period, which had plagued Japan for nearly 60 years. Yoshimitsu established his shogunate headquarters along the Muromachi Road. The period of the Ashikaga shogunate is also called the Muromachi period as a result. Yoshimitsu improved relations with Ming China, and the culture of China flourished in Japan. Japanese economics, architecture, and writing were all influenced by Chinese culture during this time. In addition to his interest in China, Yoshimitsu was a patron of the newly developed Noh theater. He retired in 1394 but continued to control the shogunate until his death at age 50.
Minamoto no Yoritomo made the title of Shogun a hereditary title so only the Genji Clan and its descendants can become Shogun. Ashikaga, Akechi, and Tokugawa all were descendants from the Genji Clan. Oda Nobunaga cannot become a Shogun because he came from the Heike Clan.
Shoguns were hereditary military leaders who were technically appointed by the emperor. However, real power rested with the shoguns themselves, who worked closely with other classes in Japanese society. Shoguns worked with civil servants, who would administer programs such as taxes and trade.
The origins of the title shogun is derived from the title sei-i taishōgun (征夷大将軍) which translated as 'Commander-in-Chief of the Expeditionary Force Against the Barbarians' from the Yamato Court period. Military commanders are appointed by the Yamato Court to conduct military expeditions against the tribes of northern Honshu especially the Emishi people which are considered the ancestors of the Ainu people, the indigenous people of Hokkaido. Minamoto no Yoritomo was the first to rule Japan under the title of Shogun under the Kamakura Shogunate which was the first Shogunate government of Japan. Since then the main criteria to become the Shogun is to provide evidence of Minamoto descent. Also the title Of Shogun can only bestowed by the Emperor at Kyoto. Tokugawa Ieyasu claimed descent from Minamoto no Yoritomo through the Nitta Clan as it belonged to the Seiwa Genji branch of the Minamoto clan. After his victory at Sekigahara, he presented his family genealogy to the Imperial Court at Kyoto to be inspected by the royal historians and genealogists. Of course Ieyasu was not descended from the Minamoto Clan but given the facts that he was now the most powerful daimyo in Japan, the Imperial Court declared the 'authenticity' of his family genealogy and bestowed the title of Shogun to him.
I understand taking a rival house’s child as a hostage to cease hostilities. And also educating them since they are still high born. But why are you providing them military tactics training? 🤷
Hideyoshi: relocate Ieyasu to Kantō region so he will be deprived from his ancestral lands in Mikawa Tokugawa: *grow stronger tenfolds in Kantō* Hideyoshi: *surprised Pikachu face
The only reason Japan change was because US told them if they didn't modernise with the rest of the world they would make them by force had nothing to do with the Shogun they were still samurai up until that point
For a group of people romanticised for their honour, they sure betrayed each other a lot.
just like a knight in medieval europe
samurai are also always glorified despite their bad and problematic history
Yeah. It's I story old as time.
You confuse honor with loyalty. Honor is rooted in self interest. Loyalty is rooted in the interest of others. Selfish vs. Selfless... most are 1 or the other. But some can both.
Yeah like Democrats
Its called game if thrones… every leader has a fair share of bloods in their hands either literally or figuratively
Moral of the story: Give a child a good education and an understanding of the world around him and he will make a great impact.
Excellently done. Historically factual which is rare for a lot of RUclips videos. I like your way of presentation. I will be subscribing.
For anyone old enough to remember the book Shogun or maybe the PBS series on it, this is the man that Toronaga was based on.

4:41 it’s a good thing they relocated to Kanto. Catching Moltres should increase their military power.

OK
Tokugawa Ieyasu, the First Shogun, MacArthur was the last
If you're talented, isn't it to make you your own subordinate?😊
I thought this was gonna be how the shotgun was first made
Why? The title distinctly says that this is about the Edo. It doesn't say anything about how the Shogunate started.
Noice...
