Thanks for showing us a Mauritian house. I am originally from Mauritius and have also lived in India for many years so I can compare a bit between the two.
Mauritius houses are big:
Yes, there is a high insistance on home ownership in Mauritius, so most Mauritians own their own homes. The front garden and backyard are standard configurations.
Mauritius has a strong French/ European influence, so they tend to build houses based on these influences.
Mauritius does not have the same distance pressure as India when someone wants to go to study or work. One can live in their own native village or town and commute to University or job. One does not necessarily need to relocate to town and then put pressure on the housing there. We live with our parents till we marry. The girl moves with her husband, while the boys build their house next to their parents and live as a nuclear family. People tend to live several generations in the same neighbourhood.
Most of these houses were built between mid 1980's to end 1990's when the mean number of children per family was 4, so they tended to build houses which run into 4-6 bedroom houses. The house designs seem to be stuck on this era, while the family size has decreased to around 4.
The postbox and garbage point is because from the mid 1980s onwards in most families everybody works are go to school the towns and villages are essentially ghost towns during office hours. Even the local shops are closed during office hours.
There are no fans like on the ceiling like in India. Mauritius is sub-tropical with a mild tropical climate. The period when one need a fan are a few days in summer, so there is no permanently fixed fan.
The toilet/ bathroom situation is also based on the 1980s design when it was a one toilet/ bathroom for the family. Also the concept of renting or sub-renting is not heavily ingrained in Mauritius as house ownership is so high. So the designs are mostly for one family living with one toilet/ bathroom in a huge house.
The prayer spot at the front of the house is called 'Mahabir Swami' and next to it there is also a tulsi tree. There is an annual puja where the the flags get changed. 'Mahabir Swami' is of course 'Mahaveer Swami Hanuman'. This configuration is indicative of the Indians who came to Mauritius via the port of Calcutta and are for the most part from the Bhojpuri/ Purvanchal region of North India. ( they are the dominant group in Mauritius). The 'Mahabir Swami' seems to be a recreation of their ancestral village homes. If there is a flowing water source nearby, like a river or stream, you will find a 'Kalimaye' which is the village or even town / suburban Kali mandir consisting of a small platform and stones for deities. This harks back of course to their distant in time villages in India.
And yes, the dogs and cats in each home. I grew up in the countryside and now I think about it. The dogs are the Indian pariah dog and they are good guard dogs. They will bark at any stranger who ventures up our street. The cats are very useful to keeps rats in check.
