- Here is a video of the method I like to use to stretch brand new guitar strings. This really helps to keep a new set in tune. Do not use too much tension and tune after you stretch the strings each time. Feel free to contact me with any questions. www.300guitars....
I keep trying to see how to stretch before I workout and this is what I get. I don't even play the guitar.
LOL!
The universe is telling you to take up playing the guitar.
Funny
😂
🙃 u so silly
Another thing to try out is to hold down the string on the first, then stretch from the middle, retune, hold down the second fret, rinse, repeat (You don't have to do this higher frets). This is a trick Guthrie Govan learned from a fellow player, Phil Hilbourne, I believe. He says it provides for a more even string tension, but I have yet to try it out for myself.
the finger thumb method is the way berklee teaches! it works best because it leaves the whole string with a BALANCE stretch - not just sections of the string like many guys do. Of course this is just the best way to do it fast with no more string settling issues in my opinion. but it hurts your fingers. new tool out that i love it STRETCHA google string stretcha and get one. it is amaziing for floyd rose set ups too. every tech should have one
I have a Les Paul 1971 vintage that never stayed in Tune, but I stretched the heck out of the strings and it does seem to work. I was surprised. I never got this advice until researching videos.
I use this method even for classical nylon strings. It's not as fast or as sure with the nylon, but it helps speed up the process.
BP- It seems like everyone has a different method. I tune the guitar, then tune each string individually a whole step higher or so, bend a few notes, and then release re-tune the string back to pitch. That method has been working for me for quite a while now. Also, I like your videos and I just subscribed.
I'll definitely give this a try next time. I normally like to use the method you showed first that most people use, only I drag my fingers from 3rd to highest frets back and forth as I do it, retune and repeat a few times. Works well, but still need to retune a couple times after I start playing.
Wow! What an awesome way to BREAK STRINGS!!! Thanks "penaliser"
Nonsense. I stretch my strings with a very similar method and have broken maybe 1 or 2 strings in the last 5 years. And I play with a very aggressive attack when playing SRV type stuff. If you're breaking strings a lot, look at your method of attaching to the tuner post, what's going on at the nut, and what's going on at the bridge saddle. Often you'll find either there is a small burr wearing the string until it breaks (which a luthier can correct) or you've damaged the string at the tuner peg when installing it. Look at WHERE your string breaks to get a clue what is causing the issue. If using locking tuners, you want them screwed down tight enough to lock the screw but not so tight you start to cut the string.
thanks man, my guitar tech buddy told me to stretch them but he didn't actually show me how, really appreciate it!!
Thanks - I did this on my Taylor T3B and it helps a lot. I have 4 Taylor guitars and this is the only one that will not stay in tune. I used your method and some graphite on the nut and now the problem is fixed. Thanks again.
hey billy thanks for demonstrating! I heard this stuff is super essential for new strings.
I do this every time. It works great. Strings stay in tune. You have to use good judgement and don't overdo it. I have never broken a string during install. I guess I know how much force is too much.
I wish I knew this before ...I had played gigs with new strings and had tuning problems - thx 4 posting
@300guitars Well, Dunlop strrings are AWESOME!!! they really are!!! If you haven't tried them, you should do!! I loved them since the very first time I played them! Specially Zakk Wylde signature strings!! They work perfectly with dropped tunnings! you can even play in B tunning and their sound will be nice and bright. Also sth pretty cool about them is that you dont even need to stretch them... anyways I'll check out those strings and stretch them like you do! Thanks!
thank you sir!🙏🙏
I've broken more high E strings stretching them than playing... I'm definitely too violent though... I'll use about 40lbs of force and just pull the whole thing... works fine on the stronger strings, but the thin E hates it (and sadly is the string that needs stretching most).
This guy's method looks a lot safer... I learned something today!
His name is weird, but he is totally right. That isn't my preferred way to stretch a new set of strings but new strings must be stretched. If you are breaking strings when stretching a new set they might not be installed properly. Just like turning a wrench the user must have a feel for the process and not over do it.
Thanks, I just tried it after I had already stretched out my strings my old way and found all this slack I didn't get out. To those breaking little E strings, try to adjust your strength per string. Harder on the big wound strings is needed to pull out the slack, not as much strength is needed for the plain strings and they seat faster.
Thanks, man. I'd heard about stretching strings and what you've vlogged makes sense.
nothing more annoying than when ur stretching ur strings and the high E pops
Agreed!!!
That’s why I play in D standard.
Lol something is just wrong with your guitar then
My high e string broke retuning it -_-
dont get shitty strings ...
Same here. Play a Taylor 12 string. And use elixirs. Hmmm lmao
Thanks for this! Makes sense and totally works!
worked very nicely , thanks !
there goes my new e string right off the bat. fucking knew it was coming too
@warmasteryojo I think so....you obviously have to be more gentle with the stretching tension of course. The same method should work fine however... -Billy
awesome and insightful info, thanks so much!
This works so well!!! Thank you so much!!! :)
Thank you!
Will this string stretching technique make my arms bigger?
Although I have a locking nut, my experience with various string brands has been that big adjustments are in fact needed in spite of the locking. As the strings stretch, the fine tuners run out of range and the locking nut has to be opened and closed several times. If you don't know this, then you've had good luck with strings: good for you. But your abrupt rudeness is completely uncalled for.
To all the neophytes saying this method causes you to break strings.....Nonsense. I once had a guitar that broke E strings with regularity. I took it to a luthier, he corrected the issue, and I never broke a string on that guitar again.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I still got a question: Does it affect the sound? Do they sound worn out because of that handling? I love the sound of fresh strings and change them 24 h before Showtime. I left the lockings open (only Floyd Rose Trems at my gear...) over night and they stay in tune in 90% of all shows (except for the ones with studip light techs). But this method is only good for single Gigs and doesn't work for a Tour with some days in a row.
This guy is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I stretch my strings by holding them down like I'm fretting with the left as I tug on them with my right and tune em up and repeat until they are stable and the final tuning takes place and I'm good to go
i have a squier strat and when i do that it pulls the whammy bar down loosening the strings is that ok or should i try to make it not move?
Should you do this before adjusting the bridge saddles for intonation? Or tune and adjust the intonation first?
Is it okay to do this after strings have been on for a while. My lowest string doesn't stay in tune no matter what it bounces back and forth on my tuner. Ever other string is fine
Can you over stretch your strings ? will you loose tone if you stretch too much ?
wait so we strecth every string then retune and strecht again. and we do that until that when we strecth them they keeps the tune?
Thank you so much!!!
I changed strings on my Gibson LP a few weeks ago, but the strings go out of tune when I play/bend strings...because it passed a few weeks since i changed them, I just wanna know if it's to late to stretch them now? I forgot to do that last time..
Do you have to stretch the strings every time a new set is put on?
Since you hold the string with both hands, arent you stretching only the part of the string between your hands?
Im having problems with m,y guitar that has a tremolo system, would this method work with a guitar with the tremolo, floating bridge?
Hi bud, I am looking to put 10s in my Fender American Strat. I've been using 9s for a while. Any additional setup required?
Thankyou
I love the pickguard from this strat. Where i buy one for me?
LOL been playing guitar for 40 years and never have worried about stretching strings I just played my guitar a lot before it show. But this is very good and it worked took me about five times and it they were good 👍👍👍
does the same thing work on acoustic guitars (dumb question i know but im not good with them)
Do you recommend the string stretchable gadget?? THANKS FOR YOUR TIME!
Hi, great tutorial !! I'm wondering, I usually pull upward on the string like the way you first showed and I actually broke the D string just tonight!! It snapped at the point where it is clamped by the locking tuner. So, I"m wondering if your method here is just for wrapped strings only. ?? Also, is pulling upward ok or is sideways better. I got my strings stretched but maybe it took longer than your way but i'm concerned about the tension on locking tuning pegs.
wouldnt just tuning the strings higher over and over and then tuning it work too
Ok thanks!
Thank you
Is the process any different for Floyds? I feel like the trem would pick up easily, meaning that the string would not be getting stretched optimally.
:44 not enough tension? I sure have snapped alot of D strings that way
Hi!! Hey man, and whats come on whit the guitars whit Floyd Rose? Is this method good for them? Thanx
IS it a bad idea to do this with super light gauge strings?.
yes.
why cant you just stretch the strings by tuning them up temporarily?
I just snapped a string doing this. Big time fail
Tyyyyy
I would have to say no on that one. The strings are cut to very exact length and have a double ball on both ends that snaps into the system. If there is enough margin in the length, you could try cutting the balls off, and clamping them into the nut and bridge of a Floyd, I suppose. I don't know of anyone who has tried it.
I use Ernie Ball Super Slinky's and find that this silly practice of stretching strings is not necessary at all with those strings. I tune the guitar, then lock the nut and just play. I do not have to unlock the nut again after that. Only very small adjustments with the fine tuners are needed over the next couple of days after that. When you bend these strings, they return to the same pitch. So, string stretching is basically an exercise for clueless guitarists who use strings that are junk.
why dont you just pull up on each open string, and then fret each one while pulling up. i do mean fret all frets. it takes a while. but you never even have to go back and tune it in the middle. once you finish stretching, just tune that thing up and go
any less painful methods, like some sort of tool I can use? I use this method and it works, but if I stretch all strings decently in one sitting, my fingers end up feeling battered
Look up string strecha
Thank You T-Bag
Gýljë - lmao!! I thought I was the only one
my g string annoys me on all guitars I have I have a few and always find it too loose or I Have to tune it up higher and can't press down the strings then, the rattle bugs me a lot.I'm thinking of selling most my guitars if not all due to g string issues. I'm in a bad mood my brother always tells me to stay and and never calls when don’t turn up ruining my day. thanks for the vid. told him off said if you have phone and mobile you can use either lol
your nut is probably cut too high. factory setups are usually bad. they also intentionally leave the nuts cut high so a player can cut them down to a desired height (an option they wouldnt have if it were already cut low). take it to a _reputable_ setup man and he can fix it fast and for cheap.
Break up with him. Its obvious that its just not working out. lmao.
Does this help to keep a tremolo in tune as well?
they're saying it DOESN'T go out of tune though. that's interesting.
Headdeskkkk! You are not stretching the entire string by doing it this way. Just stretch them whilst one end is attached to the bridge if you don’t want to put strain on your neck/tuners. The way this guy is doing it you are leaving the gab in between his two hands. Yo7 won’t hold tune for very long this way and will just end up stretching them via play.
I don't see how I contradicted myself. I have experience with strings that are junk, which is how I know. Now I don't buy them. No, it isn't good to stretch strings regardless of type. With some of them, nothing happens, so it is pointless. Just tune up and play. Another example of this are the special strings used for the Steinberger transposing tremolos. They are cut to a precise length. If you break one, you just pop in a replacement without tuning! It comes up in tune and that's that.
thx
How many times should one repeat this process? Or does it vary?
Usually takes me three times each string. It may vary though
I really worried about doing this and damaging the strings :s
DO NOT DO THIS .... HE IS NOT THOROUGH ENOUGH. He is correct in the stretch method, but since he does not clarify several things, beginners may try to stretch the strings while the strings are at full tension. DON'T DO THAT.
So I should first loosen them, then stretch and then retune?
Or just get steel strings they stay in tune perfect right after you put them on
My guitar has half steel/half nylon strings. Should I switch to all steel? Beginner acoustic player looking to just get it right
Damn dude, just get a Duane-String Stretcher and you're done!
thanks man :) just afraid to like do it to much XD
OMG is it Tbag from prison break?
Bro punishes those strings.
Actually you break strings with this method! I've tried it.On NYLON strings, it works much better and is a prerequisite for holding tuning. On electrics, I tin solder the wrapped ends on the plain strings, and uses locking tuners, not one turn around any of the tuning posts. Every string has to settle in by itself. Tune up, wait a while, tune up again. With all due respect, what have you been smoking?
*****
The part just above the ball end, that is the loop. The locking "snare" so to speak. On wound strings it is wrapped up anyway, with the wound string, but on the plain it is the "locking end" just above the ball. I first sand it a bit, so the solder would stick to it, and just a tiny tiny shiny layer of tin solder. IT SHOULD NOT DRIP, or leave a drop that is "frozen" in air, it should barely cover the strings diameter at that part. 3 strings. E,B,G only. It keeps them from going "irk irk" when using the whammy bar, and they stay in tune faster, from when tuning them up from the start on. The solder keeps them from slipping and flexing into right pitch. It just takes a bit longer without solder. With solder they are on par with the wound strings when KEEPING in tune right after you have strung them up. Just keep in mind, no solder at the ball end at all! Just at the loop. Also, if someone should believe this is bettering string longevity, it's not so. The lifespan of the strings are just about the same. They can break just as well. There may be some string brands, and models which has "reinforce" ball ends, and "super bullets" variant where this is not applicable.
***** He means the part of the string that is wrapped around the post.
Ohhhh... I'll try to do this with the Jimmy Wess strings... cause they are a piece of shit!!! I always use Zakk Wylde's Dunlop strings (that are AMAZING btw), but sometimes the first string breaks and the only brand that I can buy just one string is Jimmy Wess and I reeeeeaaaaly hate them... -.-
I'll try this and see if this works or confirm that Jimmy Wess strings are like elephant shit
tbag
Bullshit. Ozark Mandollins video does it correctly. This dude is wrong.
put on some gloves, leather is best.
Not a good method....and certainly not studio worthy !
Thank you much sir!
do the steinberger strings fit floyd rose?
