  • When medical student Dinesh Palipana was left a quadriplegic after a horrific car accident, he was told he would never become a doctor.
Unable to feel anything in his arms and legs, he knew as a third year medical student that his spine had been damaged and his life had changed forever.
Not even his best friends thought he would be able to finish medical school.
Eight years later, he's one of the top young medicos working in busy Gold Coast University Hospital.
    * This episode aired on Australian Story 2018.
    * In November 2020, Dinesh was named the Queensland Australian of the Year.

I’m a paraplegic, from Sweden. I met my fiancé about a year after my spinal cord injury and we’ve been together for 4,5 years now. Whoever is lucky enough to end up with Dinesh knows his limitations beforehand and being an adult she can choose for herself. He’s not tricking anyone or “pulling” someone into his life of difficulties. I hope he meets the right woman for him very soon!!

Our bodies don't define us. It's our spirit to live and our heart to love that makes us whole.
Congratulations on achieving your goal to become a doctor Dinesh 🎉👏

It’s wonderful all these heart felt comments on here wishing he would open himself up to a relationship. But as an amputee of 2 years I can understand his feelings. It’s very complicated. It’s a mix of guilt, loneliness, longing, exhaustion. It’s hard. But I feel it’s an ongoing process. I hope he won’t feel that way forever as I hope I won’t.

I think you are totally right. Getting a disability later in life requires a lot of work, often physically and mentally. On top of that Dinesh needs to focus on his studies and career so I can easily understand him when he is not ready for that. I hope the right time will come for him (as well as for you!). I was born with a disability myself and so was my current partner, we both had to accept our bodies that look and function different from the standards before we could open ourselves to a relationship.

Wow. Thank you for sharing your triumph with us Dinesh. I was in a single auto crash when I was 18. Unconcious, with 2 collapsed lungs, there was a Doctor travelling behind me who kept me alive until the ambulance arrived. In a coma, with multiple fractures, head injuries, it was thought if I did wake from my coma I would be a 'vegetable'. I'm here to say they were wrong. Well done you.

What a lovely guy. I hope has found someone by now. I don’t think it’s fair to decide for someone else what they are willing to do for a partner who needs more care than the average person. After all, we all have our issues and our partners love us regardless. He has so much to offer. And he deserves to have everything in life too.

You are an inspiration and thank you for sharing your experience. I have a neuromuscular condition that has either become flared up or progressed for unknown etiology. It has caused me to give up my CNA career, but im now a pet sitter. I have to use mobility devices including a power w/c to accomplish some of the needs such as walking a dog. If you weren't so far away, i would give a relationship a chance to grow.

Hi people all right? Then search the internet search engines for nerve transplantation or neurorrhaphy. I read some articles that say that some quadriplegic people moved their arms and some legs again. But I don't know if this is being tested or if these surgeries are already being performed, so that people can walk again. If paraplegic or quadriplegic people walked again it would be great! I hope it helps ! A hug ! Then see the articles. I believe that they already perform these surgeries in some places and see first if it's worth it, or if the person gets worse afterwards. If not, don't. You have to be careful with these things. Because sometimes it can be irreversible.
