Joey played close to this level by age 6. He's about 10 on this video. I've been around jazz and musicians my whole life. I've never seen or heard anyone so young as fully musically developed as joey. There isn't a teacher or enough lessons in history to allow someone to put it all together as this kid has done. He was imbued with something unexplainable and otherworldly from birth is the only explanation for such talent.
Exactly
Exactly my sentiments.
He MUST be a reincarnation of .......I am lost for words.
Totally well expressed. Imbued by magic sparkle and elan…
Why hasn't anybody yet said anything about the drummer?? This guy is beast!!!
Yeah! Danish master, Morten Lund 🎶
I am an amateur jazz pianist and every time I hear Joey Alexander I am in awe and bow to greatness at such a young age! I will carry on practising!
The amount of talent in this video is asymptotically approaching infinity...
3:50 you know you’re a freaking amazing player when even Joey smiles and grooves to you like that.
Supernatural swing with references to the jazz canon all over the place! The gods are not fair in giving gifts. Some of us just been touched. Joey!
One of the best and nice versions…beautiful piano impro lines…
This might just be one of the best versions of this tune ever
Non of these guys is normal. This boy on piano is too perfect in his approach. And the saxophonist. This is crazy
God bless you, Joey.
Just incredible.. Beautiful piano intro.. No words to describe the sensation just a simple: they fuckin kill it, I can easily imagine Trane's little smile listening to this.. He'd be sooo proud
Just awesome. What else is there to say. Gabor is awesome too. Love his tenor sound. Unique but distinct. What a player this guy (Gabor). This Euro guy can play. Wow! Joey you're just too awesome. Can't wait to see you in LA when you come and play at The Broad. Baik Sekali!
Someone please pour some water on this kid... He is smokin'!! In the midst of his solo, a long one, ala Coltrane, he slips in a little "St. Thomas" by Sonny Rollins... This kid is too much!!! This is REAL JAZZ, Dave Koz & Kenny G....
+James Griffin Also slips in "countdown" at 8:09. This isn't something that can be learned at his age. It's a gift from God
+James Griffin he threw in St Thomas, Epistrophy, Moment's Notice, a bird tune i can't remember the name of, Countdown in the intro but the amazing thing about this solo was the way he played on the outside upper extensions of the chords consistently. like at one point for about 3 choruses bars he altered every chord in the exact same way. his ears are more opened up than any player i've ever heard. I don't think even the best jazz players quite hear what he is hearing I've played and studied jazz my whole life and I know he's going a couple levels deeper than what i can break down. I can hear it but it is twisting my ear to do so. And it would take me another whole life time to be able to do it.
+Ray Cabarga he also quotes coltranes "satellite"
James Griffin woah woah... i get the kenny g burn, but dave koz... really?
James Griffin I heard a bit of Lester leaps in too
Joey laying off at 2:28 then coming back so nicely at 2:31 is genius.
joey alexander is quite simply a prodigy on the same level as Mozart
Theres no answer to Joey. Just incredible. Only 24k views and the pop crap gets mega comments. Theres no justice in the world. Gabors great too. Wonderful playing, almost brings me to tears!! Thanks guys.
Exactly. That damn intro could win a Grammy!
So right man, and who are the 7 trump voters who thumbs downed this??? Must have been those damn humans because no other species on earth wouldn't appreciate this haha!
You can find a lot of classical piano prodigy who can play amazingly at 10 or less. But only one kid who is the biggest jazz piano prodigy who can play giant step perfectly at 6 yo. Classical music is about remembering but jazz is about improvisation that's why only joey can do what he does
wow! he looks like just playing with his toy..so effortless.. what a talent!
All of these cats are killing it! And none of them are from USA, the birthplace of jazz. Wow! Keep on keeping on please!
I just looked up the tenor man and it seems he was a prodigy like Joey. The future of jazz is bright with these 2 cats leading the next generation of jazz!
The drum solo gave me goosebumps. Brilliant play by everyone on stage! Bravo
Throughout his solo he kept using the first line of Au Privave as a lick then finally at 6:03 he quotes the melody! Such a genius. I saw him live in October 2015 and it was life changing, truly inspirational.
There are also snippets of Epistrophy and Countdown in his solo. Coltrane and Monk are smiling!
seconds earlier there was also a sick anthropology quote
Beautiful intro & incredibly inspired riffs!
thundering ,impassioned Tenor solo ...right out of the top draw.!!!!!
This drummer is captain beyond!!!!!!!!
Good case for traditional grip
Tenor player's lines are genius
Wesley Georgiev yes and loved his 26-2 quote
I just found this today. I love his playing. Sound, rhythm, ideas, everything...
This is a great video. Young talent is something we all appreciate. It's what civilization thrives on.
Denmark-Indonesia-Sweden-Hungary = DISH
They give us a very very delicious jazz.
Quels "Jazziciens" d'excellence surrealistique!
Bravo!!!
Everyone!!!
day my day was spent on watching Joe's youtube, but it's not wasted time. I feel more beautiful jazz through Joey's fingers.. I really happy & enjoyful to hear jazz right now & for the future..
The hardest thing to do in music imho is to play in front of black musician/s (esp the old one) and make them giggle like kids and and / or make "dayum" face by your playing,... Joey certainly already on that level at such a young age, and surrounded by another great musicians like this, man it's unbelievable,...
Simply amazing! He got some SERIOUS chops!
Vox : Giant Step is the most feared song in jazz
Joey Alexander (12 year old) : *playing casually and improvised it
Me : o_O
Vox: Giant Steps is the most feared song in jazz
Joey Alexander: Hold my Mountain Dew
Oml their comping is amazing. This is beautiful
Unlike the Lang-Lang and Lydians of this world, Joey grew up comping: ruclips.net/video/QNXhUCKNsJQ/видео.html
Coltrane would be proud!! This kid is SICK!!!!! (THAT'S GOOD BTW):) Sounded like 10 people in the audience with this much incredible music being performed, and then, one can hear Justin Bieber perform in front of 10 million people jumping up and down on the stage, playing sh** Topsy Turvey world we live in!!!
Truer words have rarely been composed in a RUclips comment Pepper Williams. Brilliant! This kid is the real deal.
Any true musician knows that to compare 2 completely different pieces of music from different times and styles is not fair at all. While music may not require much skill it doesn’t lessen its value. I prefer this way more than Justin Bieber but to call his music shit isn’t really fair
Magnificent!!....
Genius Pianist Jazz Kid
You guys are on fire!
Brilliant and getting better with age
3:47 Gabor quotes Coltrane's 26-2 and you could see that Joey heard it too haha
We all heard it too
Such intensity from the whole band
Fantastic u Joey....
Grooving. Love it.
Holy sheeeeeattt!!
any players try to hold their self bcoz they have no more moves to give, but joey just jump into the traffic between the craziest drum and bass fights, and nailed it.. that was insane..
3:47 26-2 quote hip as FUCK
Pequeno que toca grande demais
The only way to play Giant Steps is thorough mastery of it. It has to be second nature. If you stop and think about anything you've already lost it.
Gabe Morrow spot on...although i think all jazz tunes should be approached in that way ...but this tune even more so
And the kid just only 12
Actually tho, these guys have some nice taste in glasses
Ahhh when he brought in St Thomas!!!! Wow!
I am a jazz pianist and can't simply explain what exactly Joey is. All that jazz at that age? Some old muso reincarnation I guess.
Duuudee this is crazy
Well put! haha! it's a miracle is what it is and when my mom told me there's a kid from indonesia who plays giant steps like an old pro I thought she was going senile. Then i listened. Tears came to my eyes. It was the first miracle i'd ever seen.
bravo!
This is Giant Steps in a way, Bill Evans would probably play it... This kid is marvellous. :)
He would only wish he could
🌱🌸💙😃
0:54 that Countdown quote
5:54 St. Thomas :D
and you can heard billie's bounce too 6:04
@@DVDKC That's Au Privave you're thinking of
@@aidanschram9652 Yes exactly
Something Tell me that Michel Petrucciani is come back to this world
8:06 - soooo good
W O W !!!! 🤗
No mention of who the percussionist is? No slouch, either :) What a great video!
OK! Morten Lund is the drummer. Danish. Thank you, Wikipedia :)
He is already mentioned above. Just click the SHOW MORE button and you will see the drummer's name.
He plays like a reincarnation of a musical genius
I am just going to tell it like it is joey has a lot of African American in him,you can see it as well as hear it in his music, I know he's from Indonesia, but we are so quick to say like I saw in another comment,on the tablet, that someone typed, in had Jewish in him, that's all well and good but jazz came from the African American, people. And Joey studies these great jazz men, that is why he is a young giant of today.understand me plainly his creator made him like that and you cannot negate his mom and dad because his dad played jazz albums around him when he was a toddler.
Hannible Tobe Indonesian had their DNA from African mixed with East Asian. The western indonesian people look like south east asian (thai, malay, philipines), while eastern indonesian (papua) look like african (and very musical), gradualy mixed in the middle.
Joey mother is from western indonesian (java, mix with ashkenazy jew), his father is from eastern.
And also can if you listen some of his other stuff like ask me now with Gabor Bolla you can see he plays like thelonius monk, on also on other tunes he plays monk. Is his favorite, John Coltrane billy strayhorn herbie Hancock, Horace silvers monk like I said his joeys favorite. He pays homage to the great jazz men of yesterday, today, and always. So joey is a young giant of today... He also plays like himself that is why he is so great.that u 4 listening Maria is my name.
OMG
Joey is most certainly inhabited by an old soul, perhaps the reincarnation of Duke or Coltrane or Amadeus himself...lol. What do I know? Not much, just that he is dam good!
Its much more than one soul trapped in that body.
7:00 reference to St. Thomas by Sonny Rollins
OMG - Joey,! Joey! Joey!
Epistrophy @ 7:54
Flanagan's back Coltrane. Listen up.
frotter. Les jazzmen le savent !
I hear allllllloooooottt of chick corea on him. Great cat.
3:16 i swear thats benny golson
Tommy Flanagan could never....
Nor anyone else
Surprised to see him playing the Bosendorfer. I thought he was a Steinway artist?
a little 26-2 quote in the tenor solo
He avenged Tommy Flanagan
26-2 3:49
Joey quotes satellite in his solo too.
He also quotes St. Thomas!
The kid almost burst out laughing when he noticed!
Joey sneaks in a couple of his favorites: Epistrophy at 7:53 and Countdown at 8:08
Great jazz but I want you guys to know that they are both not sticking strictly to the form of the song, which is fine! That's a tough tune, John Coltrane practiced it for a year straight before recording it.
Poor Tommy Flanagan :D
Yeah, Tommy had two weeks to practice it and he did not know they would be playing it at such a fast tempo!
They pretty much are sticking to the form of the original. How are they departing in your opinion? Because there is an extended cadenza? Jazz forms by nature are very loose compared to other forms of music and the basic form is generally a melody which is expected to be ornamented, inverted and developed etc. alongside a set of chord changes which are expected to be embellished, substituted or even completely reharmonised. The harmony in this sticks very closely to the original form and above and beyond that, the soloist states the head quite clearly and even improvises using a lot of coltrane pattern lines as in the original.
3:43
3:44
3:45
Did u hear St.thomas?
James Steen he also quotes from Countdown
Yes. St Thomas was part of this set: So yes, he's going to quote it.
6:47 his tenor solo is easily as good as Brecker .Mintzer ,Potter, Frahm, Alexander etc
etc
Drummer Lund obviously likes Tony Williams
Wow! I wonder if he plays with toys on band breaks. haha
He probably struggles with winning video games which at least makes him human.
Dave Martin he has fast fingers to play video games.
Dave Martin He does! He does kid stuff too. I met him at a gig and he signed my CD "To Ray, Love Joey" in shakey kid handwriting. It was adorable!
You can tell the audience is musicians because of the clapping.
Poor Flanagan.
Or any other pianist
Who dislikes this
These guys are all pretty good but I am not a fan of overplaying, which is most of what goes on here.
Never play Giant Step?
"These guys are all pretty good".hmmmm, faint praise ...look forward to seeing your giant steps videos🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@davidscott1052 Advanced artists don't give a-f whether you praise them or not so I'll not bother to discuss your negative reply. I have by the way recorded this tune many times. These guys overplay this tune in my view, but to be forward about why I say so, Coltrane's original solo on this tune more or less sticks to a pre-written script throughout and there's a reason for that. He gives an elegant, concise, pruned solo. His improvisation as such is almost none. G-S is a composition that is very limiting harmonically due to the quick pace. Over the years I have noticed that many artists who record it cannot avoid fluffing it up with filler, chromaticism and other superficialities. That's why I do not pour praise on this recording. Good playing maybe, but virtuosity for the sake of virtuosity is not desirable.
@@jazzlives not harmonically complicated 2 5 1 s throughout and you don't have to play it fast ...I play it as a bossa...did so yesterday night...works really well....I understand your comment ...though I think you will be in a very small minority
