    This is exactly what my dad did back in the 50's to mid 60's. The burn barrel was always there mounted just as you show in your video. In fact, I'd say most people in our community had at least one in those days. Today that lake house area is mostly millionaires and they probably don't allow them anymore. Loved your video, it brought back fond memories.

    Oh thank goodness! I just got one, and was wondering if I should put holes in bottom. I already did the sides. And put it up on blocks. So holes on bottom. Got it! Thank you sir! 💚

    Saw shavings are good for composting or to place around blueberry bushes. If gardeners live in your area they would probably take it off your hand. :)

    I bought a galvanized burn barrel lid on Amazon a couple years ago for $20. It's really helped make my burn barrel last. Also, I drilled holes in my last burn barrel, but it didn't work out for me. The pounding rains where I live let water in and rusted it out. They were only 3/8" too.

    I use the exact same barrel and one day my kid came over and put a pipe in one of the holes and put a little vacuum cleaner exhaust to it and this baby became a blast furnace. Burns FAST and hot. I made a wire screen over the top of mine with 1/4” squares for safety.

    Keep the lids that often come with barrels , you can cover so rain can get inside! I put broken branches that fall during a wind storm,then burn when barrel gets full

    How do I start the flame when burning tree limbs? I am trying to burn twigs and branches but they wont light or burn when using lighter fluid. They have been broken, sitting outside for a year. They seem dry. Any suggestions for getting it started? Thanks

    • @ChuckNorrisUltra
      @ChuckNorrisUltra 3 года назад +1

      Wads of newspaper or pieces of cardboard. If that don't work, a little charcoal fluid.

    • @johndowe7003

      Soak a old rag in diesel then light it. It'll burn long enough to ignite whatever you wanna burn

    • @bmorestance
      @bmorestance 3 года назад +1

      @@johndowe7003 Hey Thanks for the info. So... this was a while ago and omg I almost blew up! I decided to try Gasoline.... I did not have any Kerosene. I was lighting from the bottom of the barrel with a long stick lighter. Finally it went Boom and I wasnt suprised because that shit even happens when I light my grill... Anyway it did light but I guess the Gasoline create the fumes and gases which exploded. Does the Kerosene do that too? or is Kerosene harder to light but burns better?
      Thank you for the reply!

    • @johndowe7003
      @johndowe7003 3 года назад +2

      @@bmorestance kerosene burns about the same as diesel it's just more expensive and doesn't burn the quite the same as diesel . Just diesel like for a heavy truck, it's like 3$ a gallon here compared to 10$ for a few ounces of kerosene. just soak the cloth rag and put a lighter to it and it'll ignite slowly where it won't blow up on you. Gasoline and kerosene evaporate too fast so it doesn't have enough time to ignite. If you add some holes to your barrel it'll burn way cleaner as well. Just use a cold chisel and a big hammer to poke holes in it. Diesel soaked ragged works good for lighting up charcoal. Just make sure you got the diesel in the rag only, if you get it on the charcoal it'll carry the petrol flavor to the food. If you do it the right way the rag will burn away and leave the charcoal unadulterated.

    Even better is to bury it or toss it in a swamp. That way there's a chance the carbon that the trees collected from the air and grew out of gets stored in the ground, just like coal, oil and natural gas.

    Great video! I am a local Fire District member. Local ordinances forbid burning anything artificial/carcinogenic. Naturallly occuring substances, only. And, your local Fire Chief will have no sense of humor, putting her/his fire fighters in harms way because "you" choose to ignore local ordinances. And, got caught.

      Top section...this is MOST important. Make holes using 3/64" bit. You will want 27 of those in a zig-zag pattern. Ask wife how it looks.
