This lesson is based on my new course Johnny's Influence: Texas Hustle and in it I'll teach you a few things I discovered about Johnny's playing - specifically in the Box 1 shape. These are not difficult or complicated things, but they contribute to the signature sound of his playing in a big way.

Was listening to ‘3rd degree’ in the car today.. Johnny shredding and sliding on the resonator. It’s a great album!

Yeah, Anthony! I so much appreciate your patience and commitment to tackling and analyzing everything that made JW special. Johnny's style was probably very much derived from exactly the things you mentioned and created the difference you hear between his playing and SRV's. Johnny's influences were mainly definitely pre-Hendrix, whereas SRV's came through many of the players introduced to him by his brother Jimmie and, of course, Jimi. Love them Both! Thanks for What You Do!

I think the thing you are pointing out about Winter vs SRV is the phrasing that Winter took on from Little Walter. I feel like Winter’s solos breathe in a way that Vaughn’s don’t, which i credit to him thinking like a harmonica player who needs to breathe. Stevie Ray could just be relentless when he was soloing. he just had so many ideas that they seemed to come right on top of eachother and even over lap, like he was starting a new idea even before he finished the previous statement. Winter was more restrained than that, he didn’t have that same high pressure and it lets things have more space and be more open ended.

Thanks for this! I was privileged to see JW several times in the late 70”s thru the 80’s and I would always say he is the definition of being one with your guitar. He was also a man possessed when he was on stage.

Forgive me for taking up space. When we talk about this stuff, Little Walter as an influence and so on, we are talking about the culture of the genre. It gets into history, theory, relationships, etc. Fascinating stuff which has cultural value.

I believe what you're hearing in Johnny's playing is his Mississippi Delta influences, he was very much into Delta blues.

Stevie Ray never acknowledged Johnny’s influence on him. That’s what bothered Johnny. Of course, Johnny was an influence on Stevie and on everybody who played blues at that time.

Never liked SRV, never will. He stole too much from others, call it blending. I call it stealing.
