Yeah I think some people are confusing a person's playing style (dynamics, types of common licks, chord choices, etc.) with their "tone" which is a much more subtle and hard to hear thing.

He does make everything sound the same. But thats not a problem. He sounds great, he clearly knows what he wants to sound like.
Sorry John, it is true, you have a very distinct sound and you don't wander particularly far from it. There is nothing wrong with that it is far from an insult or a criticism. Lots of great guitarists do the exact same thing.
It would be like finding home, the place on earth where you are the most happy then spending all your time away from it looking for somewhere in the hope that it might be better ... why would anyone do that?
Surely spending your time in that place and investing time on bedding in is better than wasting your time chasing tone.

Tone is in the mind. We dial in settings and our fingers work to accommodate the production of either what we conceive in our mind or the tone towards which in our mind we have a preferential bias.

Your tone is not the same all the time, your style is consistent. Many people will get those two things confused. Tone is not in the fingers. If it were you would not need gear at all. People will tend to attempt to dial in the tone they like, as you said. There is a guy here on RUclips, based out of Nashville, that has shown how nonsensical most of the guitar myths actually are. And he is correct. You just keep being you, guitars, puppies, etc and we will all be good.

  • @steveliberty

Exactly right. We dial in the tone that is in our head (or at least try to), so right off the bat, no matter what tools we are using, the results will be in the generally same ballpark because that is what we are TRYING to achieve. And then, our touch, our attack, our grip, etc. all contribute to the resulting tones, no matter which amp or modeler we are using. So, do you always sound the same? Well, when you are playing your video opening lines, you tend to sound like JNC - go figure! Its not an insult. it means you have a distinctive sound, which is a good thing. And to some extent, it is the reality that we all live with in our own playing. If you played a bunch of AC/DC chords, my guess is that you might not be as recognizable 🙂

Gear matters only if you dont have any access to it...or if you have access only to super low quality stuff that sound like a swarm of bees....nowadays though pretty much every device out there(and there are almost limitless options to choose from by the way) is of at least very good quality to stellar quality.
So since gear nowadays wont ever be an issue its all about the skillllzzz. Practice and practice and when you done..practice some more...its not really a rocket science. If you do your X guitar you hold in your hands plugged into an Y device ll always sound great by default....

I agree with what you said. You've got a signature sound and way of playing that I think many of us on the Channel could identify in a few notes. I remember commenting on that not long after I started watching you Channel, and compared it favorably to artists like BB King, whose tone and playing style is iconic. That you managed to develop an your own sound that so many people admire is a remarkable feat, and deserves congratulations!
When I dial in tones, I certainly have my favorites, but more importantly for me, I try to find tones that are different, and make me play and think differently about what I'm creating. I have the same philosophy regarding my guitars, pickups, music - One good example of each type: Solid body, Archtop, Acoustic, Classical, Bass, Acoustic Electric, etc. Each one inspires in me a different way of playing.

Tone is indeed in the fingers....it's something we cannot get away from so learn to love it. Then we have to use the right gear to bring it out in the way we want it to be heard. I've been buying and selling guitars, amps etc since the mid seventies and this has become obvious to me over the years. Also get a bunch of players in a room with a guitar and amp and pass it around the room and let them play with no setting changes. The way the sound changes will amaze you...finger tone

  • @WarrenPostma

If it's in tune and it sounds good to you, your gear is fine. (Truth)
The Edge has a a rack of gear about half the size of a google datacenter. I need the Edges rig. Then I will sound like the edge. (Not the Truth)
The "tone is in your fingers" mantra is a reminder that YOUR GEAR IS NOT THE BIGGEST LIMITING FACTOR, it's your dedication to playing your instrument (and your gear is all your instrument) is the final arbiter of the quality of your work. It's not that you don't need ANY GEAR at all, it's that you don't need MORE, for 99% of players, you have enough gear NOW, and maybe too much. Tone is in your fingers and in your brain controlling your gear. Those fingers (without your brain) do nothing at all.
You can probably make great music today with what you have in front of you. The other 50% of this mantra is "Know Your Gear". Using a modeller? Learn it like you learned your guitar. Learn what it does and learn to maximize it for your purposes. You are playing a composite music instrument made up of a guitar and a floor modeller unit, and a speaker cabinet, or amp. It's all the instrument.

That's why I occasionally compliment you when you have a video where you're "picking hard"... I guess what I was trying to say is "Wow you are playing outside of the normal comfort zone of what I think of as John Cordy." Ola gets the same criticism in the metal world, he made some videos about it where he discovers he indeed tends to make "all amps sound the same". I think you hit the nail on the head when you said "Things I do to get the sound I like"... Absolutely, you get a new amp or model that has too much bass in it you're gonna cut the bass out until it feels familiar. So I guess half of our tone comes from our fingers, and the other half from our ears because you're never going to play a gig with settings on your amp that someone else has dialed in.

Something my late mentor would emphasize that I don’t hear distinguished often enough is that, essentially, gear is about of 25% our sound but 75% of our muse. It’s not necessary to create great music but it is necessary in exploring our own artistry which can help us create EXCELLENT art and music. Eventually though, the goal is to take with it the familiarity of our creative terrain and no longer be dependent on its guidance. Which is why all these legends can show up to a gig and sound just like themselves, always, when they’re only using the back-line (actual story of a Jeff beck show I went to).

  • @Pantalooj

Take it as a compliment when people say you make stuff sound the same. I think what they are saying is 2 things. First, you are a master of shaping tone into what you want it to sound like, and complement the music that you are playing over. Secondly, you have a very recognisable sound and style ... which is incredibly hard to get to ... certainly something that the vast majority can only strive for. I also really love watching demos from Shawn Tubbs ... he too shows what's possible with each piece of gear, ie, how good can this possibly sound. A big part of that is in technique and small adjustments to compensate/improve the tone with your hands. At least that's what I think.

Great video, as always. I think tone is in the ears/mind as much as it's in the fingers! There's a benchmark tone that I hear in my head and I'm always trying to dial that into any setup that I have.
I actually reckon that tone, for many of us, stems from our earliest influences. I was into AC/DC and Zeppelin as a kid, so now I find myself leaning on Gibson/Plexi tones.
I'm certain there are exceptions because I also use a lot more tones and experimental tones, but I do think we shape our preferences off of our earliest musical experiences and tastes.

Exactly! Especially true with electric guitars with same pickup config but different brands or series. I use a humble (but shiny) PRS s2 24 or a Les Paul Studio to play at church with a bunch of rich kids, uncles or dads with Suhrs or CS Fenders. Made them all sound like a$$, and I’m not trying to brag, just the way it is. Practice and dedication, and mastery of the fingers matter, don’t drive a ferrari if you drive it like a Fiat 😂😂😂

  • @Guitarman007
    @Guitarman007 Год назад

While I respect you as a player, with all due respect, tone is in the strings, the guitar, the amp, and yes also the fingers. Gear matters quite a bit for SPECIFIC types of tones you are trying to create. It MAY NOT matter as much for other types of tones. It may not matter as much for the types of tones YOU like to play. While I wouldn't say you make everything "sound the same" EXACTLY, I think it's a fair observation that you have a "sound" and a "style" that is fairly narrow. There's no good or bad about that, it's just your thing.

but there are more things to consider,
bring in your personal phrasing, personal timing, own created backing tracks etc, and it will sound more and more like "you"

I’ve tried and used soooooo many different amps, FX and guitars over the years. My singer always says doesn’t matter what I plug into it always sounds like me. But I do the same thing you do. If I use a boogie I dial it in a certain way. If I use a fender deluxe I dial it it to sound like my Mesa DC which takes a eq and stomp to get it there. My quad cortex and my dc captures or any other capture or model I use gets dialed in to sound smooth with fat mids.
That being said everything I plug into might sound similar when I’m done but they all feel quite different under the fingers.

  • @gravyblue

Tone IS in the fingers, but not where you think. It's about what you choose to play when you respond to the sound that's happening. As an engineer, I hate the idea of recording a di on a laptop just for reamping. I always take a di, but it's for mix tweaks not reinventing the tone.

The Helix Native sounded like what I expect you to sound like. The rest were clearly you playing but not your “signature” sound. There is a spittiness to the Litigator which isn’t there in the other plugins. To your point in the more recent video, I think this is more about your right hand technique and the amp is really making that stand out.

This experiment reminds me Ola Englund gear demos. This guy sets them where he likes them., as you do. You can still hear some differences between the amps, but in the end he sets them all to sound more or less the same, in the same ball park. In the end the important is you set them where you get a sound that you like and inspire you.

As so many spout this nonsense about tonefingers, they should be able to negate what they need to in order to produce their own ‘tone’ or conversely create any given sound by just using their fingers and an unprocessed signal path. Grrrrrrr…. I say….. Grrrrrrr

    • @WarrenPostma
      @WarrenPostma Год назад +3

I don't get the idea that folks are meant to make a phaser sound with your fingers. That's dumb. :-) The tone is in your fingers thing means you don't need a CERTAIN BOUTIQUE PHASER pedal. Get the $20 amazon basics one and then spend more time practicing. Collecting vintage phaser pedals is one hobby, playing guitar is another. YOu might want to concentrate on one versus the other. You don't NEED a vintage or boutique anything, to play what you want and sound great.
Or if you're in plugin land today, instead of downloading 30 effect rigs and amp modellers and trying 300+ presets for chorus and vibrato, spend more time playing and less time faffing about with presets. That's what Tone is In Your Fingers is meant to do; Unstick your brain when it goes into Faff About mode, and get back to playing the instrument.
