    Friends I’ve upset folks again with another of my crazy ideas! I want to address some concerns:
    1. Gesso is not gouache. I like my snappy RUclips titles but forgive me if I’ve confused you. Gouache is a water based media, rewets after dry. Gesso is a polymer based media and is permanent after dry.
    2. Gesso will slowly degrade your brushes just like ANY media left to dry on the bristles repeatedly. Please wash your brushes thoroughly after each use.
    3. White gesso will only lighten any pigment you add it to (I thought that was obvious). So if you want intense and dark opacity, gesso won’t work.
    4. I’ve been painting with gesso as an additive for over 20 years and so has my brush collection. I’ve used synthetics (which stand up better in the long run to acrylics/gesso), but I’ve also used natural bristle and hybrids. In my experience the brushes stand up beautifully to the heavier media. No issues. But again, clean your brushes extremely well.
    5. Gesso is not gouache :)
    6. Watch for contamination. Rinse your gesso filled brush in a “dirty” container of water and then a clean (I always have 4 wells of water on my painting table). I will say however, I’m not always so precise and perfect. I’m sure gesso has found it’s way to my palette. Watercolor isn’t as precious as you might worry! I’m very tough on all of my supplies. Brushes, palette take a beating daily from this crazy artist and ya know what…they’re all just fine! My brushes have beautiful points after years of use, my palettes are unaffected!

      I too use all brushes for all things including blending oil sticks, oil pastels, painting D&D minis, glue, you name it. No trouble if you clean them. And. I thought you were clear in the idea you were presenting as well as the limitations and guidelines around it.

      I was trying to resist being a know-it-all, especially since my skills are far below yours, but since you brought it up again here goes: Gesso is also not 'dilute paint' In fact, it can be quite thick if that's your thing. Most importantly, it has TEXTURE. The texture is to create an additional 'tooth' to the surface. I make my own, and create my texture with a mix of calcium carbonate, talc (yep - real talc - cornstarch baby powder is not talc, though some use it with success) and finely ground mica. All this makes me wonder if you could get the exact same effect you show with a medium body white acrylic paint.
      PS: When I make gesso, I make it clear and then add pigments/paints if needed or desired depending on the painting.

      My brushes are used on all mediums including collage medium. They’re fine. I wash them with mild shampoo and if they’re slightly damaged, I pour boiling water over them re-shape and hang them upside down to dry. People need to chill the heck out and “go with the flow, and not throw a fit!” It’s only a brush and only a medium. Kirsty, please block nasty Nellies. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

    I have no idea why people take the time to criticize people who offer free instructional videos, for fun. I have brushes for years, cheap ones, more expensive ones and very expensive one (to me). I am not rich nor do I pretend to be, but I do clean my brushes very well. Some people have nothing better to do. You explained not to mix it in the palette, not to mix it with paint in the palette. What more could we ask for? Nothing! You are very nice to watch and I enjoy watching you so much. Some people need to be more kind and realize your just for entertaining and informative. I thought crafting, painting, creating there were no hard fast rules. Do you and forget all negative.

    This was an interesting technique to try, which gave me ideas for doing some effects with my watercolors with galaxies. I have gauche and I will keep on using it as I do, but this again is a very unique way of playing with your watercolors for me! As for the brushes getting ruined as people are talking about in the comments, I would just suggest using your cheaper brushes.
    By now I would assume most who own expensive brushes know how to treat them. You don't buy expensive brushes and not take care of them (unless you are rich, I guess?) But just in case, having different brushes for different types of media and cleaning them will prolong their life. That has helped me keep dollar brushes and expensive ones safe and working. :)

    Hi Kristy, I'm relatively new to your teaching (and to watercolour) and really appreciate your joyful approach to watercolour. I just wish I could get back to that childlike approach to art instead of my 60 Yr old fearful/afraid of messing up approach etc etc 😒
    I watched the cactus video yesterday and thought it was fascinating and loved the effect gesso had when you put a small dot of it on the watercolour cactus.. it was like the colour was running away from it. If the gesso was yellow/orange they'd look like little fireflies on the cactus 😊 I've ordered your brushes and can't wait for them to arrive 😍 please send your joyful thoughts my way to the UK and I may be able to pick them up...you surely radiate megawatts of positivity 😁 you make me smile while watching your videos 😊 Xx

    Keep doing what you do so well Kristy. A few people are nitpicking this video to pieces. I thought the instructions were very clear. Gesso, like acrylics and watercolor, is made to be thinned with water. As long as it stays wet, you're good. Clean your brushes well, change water frequently, and you're good. In 57 years of painting with all mediums, the first lesson I learned was how to clean your brushes. I think some people here are sweating the small stuff. People who teach art here, like you, give people a chance to learn things with no stress. I hope you continue to be uplifting and blow these sourpusses off.
    PS. My dear sister is still fairly new to watercolor and loves your style so much I sent her a set of your brushes. Watercolor was what got us through the pandemic (during hours long sessions on Duo 😁), and I want to thank you and the many artists I follow on here for the tremendous effort you make helping people learn to experience the joy of painting. ❤️

Not everyone learns the same way so trying different techniques and mixing things up is an awesome way to reach people who would otherwise be overlooked. They are the ones who think they can’t art as they need. I enjoyed this class and have been looking suspiciously at both my gesso and watercolours since seeing the video. Sure it’s not gouache but who cares. This was a nice technique, but I wouldn’t say it is the same as Gouache at all. It doesn’t at all look like Gouache paint that I’ve ever seen. I think you are showing how you could make your watercolor a tad more opaque, but it softens/lightens the watercolor and is not the bright color that Gouache paint has.

    What about using the tube of titanium white watercolour paint that's often included in sets? Unfortunately, most gesso contains a polymer like PVA which makes it stick to page but also makes it waterproof. Of course, that doesn't matter if you don't plan to re-wet your painting. :)
    I actually love the idea of the opaque white mixing into the watercolour paint - gonna try with opaque white watercolour paint and also white gesso.

    • @KristyRice

      Sure! I like the bold intensity that gesso offers in some situations, something I can’t get with white watercolor but correct there nooooo rewetting :)

    • @vanessamichel9382

      Gesso is polymer but also chalk so it will take and absorb water after it's dry and cure. Not as much as paper, and that amount will differ around brand. The standard acrylic titanium white though won't take any water, it will pearl on it like on plastic.

I'm wondering how this works with flicking and throwing loose with water on the paper. I'm not worried about my brushes like others bc you aren't saturating "gesso" into the brushes feral and painting like ppl do in an acrylic application. This is such a little amount. I think this approximates a pastel-hued acrylic gouache. It's a lot like how people mix white gouache with watercolors to make watercolors turn gouache-y. Except instead of white gouache, you're using gesso. Makes sense!
    Also...it really does kind of of look like a gouache painting. Specifically, either a watered-down Himi Gouache or my Caran D'Ache pan gouache. Not quite full opacity, but pretty opaque.

Also, gouache I still worth buying and learning in my book, this is a nice fun technique, but it isn’t gouache. Question: gouache is water based like watercolor and gesso is acrylic based, what does this do to good watercolor brushes??

    • @justacatwhocantype
      @justacatwhocantype 2 года назад +5

      If you are using taklon/nylon brushes for watercolor, they should be fine. If you are using high quality watercolor brushes made from real hair or a good imitation, you are best off only using them for water media. Not only because of the acrylic nature of gesso, but also because gesso is somewhat abrasive, as there are little solid particles in it to create a good texture for paints to stick on.

    • @MrsBarnabas
      @MrsBarnabas 2 года назад +3

      Yes. it can cause serious damage watercolour / any brushes (even those designed for acrylics) if they are accidentally left on the table while continuing to paint, and they dry, and also by clogging up the microscopic tiny 'flakes' that make up each hair as we paint.
      Watercolour brushes are made from very fine hairs that are made up of microscopic scales. As we paint, the water / paint opens up those tiny scales to enable it to carry more paint. Think of it as the effect that a good hair conditioner has on your own hair - it works by opening up those tiny scales and so adds 'volume' to the way your hair looks. It's exactly the same with your watercolour / gouache brushes..
      Acrylic paint is not good for natural or good synthetic fibre brushes, and unless you meticulously rinse your brushes every single time before putting them down to use another, because even thinned acrylic paint dries very fast. Use the proper brushes for anything that has acrylic in it, and treat them, with care, too.
      Also, allowing any acrylic gesso into the paint pan can also alter the paint in the pan so that it doesn't behave in a 'watercolour' way.
      Note: I learned the hard way...

      Hi, Ann. "This 12-pack of classic canvases features 100% cotton surfaces which have been carefully coated with three coats each of titanium white acrylic gesso, "
      Quoted from Arteza - you'll need to scroll down for the link.

      This is acrylic / polymer resin, and it's not a good idea to use watercolour brushes on it, as the unyielding surface of the acrylic will damage your delicate watercolour brushes.
      (I've written more about this elsewhere in the comments for more detail.) Hope this helps.

    Would gesso also work to cover a porous surface to prep for watercolor?

    • @KristyRice
      @KristyRice  2 года назад

      Sure! It will give you a surface that will accept watercolor but there will be some resist as you work.
      But watercolor ground would be your best option, it’s rather pricey and has an obvious tooth as you apply. Using gesso as a primer for a non-porous surface will create resist as you play watercolor and create a finished surface that wouldn’t be very durable over time.
      Edited to add :) I have a vid here where I use watercolor ground on a bare wood ornament. I’ve also used watercolor ground on non porous surfaces like nylon and it worked decently. I would find a broken shell to practice on first to gather some confidence and play with the ground a bit.

      Yes. Unless you rinse thoroughly every single time you dip into the acrylic, it will destroy your beautiful brushes, Use brushes designed for acrylic paint, and take good care of those, too. They are made of sturdier stuff, and some will look and feel similar, but they still need to be cleaned thoroughly and not left to dry out during painting (it's all too easy to put aside a brush you've just used and not rinsed... ) on the work table or afterwards
