It's a metaphor for Hell! "The devil's drivin' that long black train." There are many ways to "punch your ticket" but the choice is between Heaven (victory) and Hell (the Long Black Train).
@@guygoodwin6889 You are both wrong. It's a metaphor for sin. The "Middle of nowhere" is the metaphor for Hell. It's where the train (sin) leads. Even if you are already on the long black train, you can still get off. There is Victory in the Lord, so by turning to the Lord you can be Saved. I love the song though I don't believe in the message myself. It's too evangelical, and I don't think the Evangelicals are really true believing Christians. They don't behave as Christians are suppose to behave, and the devotion they have thrown behind Trump just proves that to me even more. I can't think of anyone who represents the personification of sin better than Donald Trump. He is greedy, slothful, vain, lust filled, dishonest... He is a tractor to this country and an enemy to democracy. And so are those who support him.
Haven't heard this one in forever. Love this song. The train is a metaphor for evil. He's telling you to stay away from it and "cling to the Father". And yes the train was taking away those who gave into the temptation and evil.
We make decisions and go down the wrong path sometimes (alcohol, drugs, prostitution, pregnancy, obesity) in life but there is always hope in relying on our creator for help. It's never to late to turn around. Hope is never loss. Tom Dutkiewicz, U.S.A.
After last night's Live, this is the perfect reaction song for today. I'm jumping off the Long Black Train, not allowing my past to define my future. There is light at the end of the my tunnel. Thank you for the live and encouragement you guys showed me last night during the Live. Gitana, thank you so much for sharing this reaction. Absolutely lovely song with powerful words.
Loved your reaction. This song could easily be a song we sing at church. The spiritual references are all over this one. This isn't a "smash you in the face with Jesus" song, but it's a more than subtle Gospel song. It was interesting to see someone not immersed in Southern America culture, or Southern Baptist culture in particular, react to this one. Keep doing what you do, and we guys in the southern US love you so much!
It is indeed interesting to see a Brit react to southern music. I myself am born and raised in the South, not a Baptist but still really enjoy gospel music..
I love the reaction videos of this song. When he sings “There’s victory in the Lord.” And “cling to the Father and His holy name.” A seed is being planted for the Kingdom every time. 😍
I have heard this one a LOT but I was today Years Old when I really Understood the Lyrics Thank you to the Gitanos who helped all of us listening to understand that and finally GET it! 💞☺
I actually cracked up and scared my dog when you said you about shit yourself...😂😂😂 The train is a metaphor for sin, those who weren’t “picked up” by the train fought the temptation of sin. That’s how I always took it. You’d like the version with Ralph Stanley even more.
After listening to all those Hank Williams train songs, a strange thing happened to him on his way home. "As I was walking back to my apartment, I had a vision of a wide open place on the plains, with a train track running straight down the middle of the fields. It was completely dark, but there was a harvest moon that was lighting up the sky. I noticed a bunch of people standing around this track. A long, beautiful, shiny black train came down the track, and the people were trying to decide whether to get on it. Somehow they knew that this train led to nowhere, but they were wondering what it would be like to ride on it." Josh Turner
Loved this song when it first came out, it STILL gives me goosebumps. And you are spot on in your assessment of the song. The one thing to take away is there is always Hope.
You are spot on with the reaction. We are free to choose but always the choice has a price, but We also have a saving grace with God. No matter how bad we think it is asking for redemption sets us free.
Catered his sound check here in Anderson. Got a behind the scenes look at this song, Why don't we just dance, three wooden crosses and more.. was like a private concert, and he is a Clemson Univ football fan so we got to talk sports, family, memories of growing up in South Carolina, and folks we both knew. Love Josh! The long black train is a metaphor for ADDICTION and death.
Love love love the messages in the lyrics of his songs!! Josh is simply AMAZING...☝️❤☝️ "victory in the Lord" "cling to the Father" Amen!! Another fantastic reaction Gitana...blessings ❤❤❤
Thanks for reacting to this one. Always reminds me of my grandma Louise. This is the second time today I thought of her and smiled. My nephew shared a short video clip of her enjoying Thanksgiving dinner a couple years before she passed away. After I would get her washed up and ready for her day, so many times she would ask me to play this for her. One of her favorites.
Sundays are good because ... On the seventh day, I get paid Double TIME!!! I'm so happy that you enjoy country music, and in glad they you introduce me to other kinds of music. Be good. Be safe. Be happy
This was the first song he wrote and recorded. He was invited to the Grand Ole Opry and had no back up song and ended up singing it twice on the stage. He was still in college. He has had many hits since then.
My nephew was his roommate in college. I met him before he was famous. Once he was the headliner at a local venue and once he heard that my Nephew's mom was waiting he let us on his bus!!
Dear Gitana, please react to if not just listen to Marty Robbins "El Paso". It is old country but it is beautiful. His voice, the older sounding music, the story telling. You can see the song play out in your mind. Give it a shot. Please. Never know, you might like it.
I would love to see you react to Vince Gill! His voice is so smooth and is an amazing musician. Some of my favorites are Adriana, Go rest high on the mountain( if you want to cry) and whenever you come around
I'm like you. I pretty much spent my whole life going off the feel and sound of music, because my ear gravitates towards the instrumentation and vocal notes. But I started making myself pay attention to the lyrics more in the past year or so. I found that I ended up liking some songs that I wouldn't have normally liked, due to good lyrics. I also found that some songs that I once really liked, I couldn't like anymore due to the message in the lyrics. But I also found a deeper appreciation for some songs that I liked, because they had a good message in the lyrics.
I totally agree with Carlos, if you listen early in the song he talks about the rails of sin or something along those lines. So Carlos Rios said it best when he said the Long Black Train is the path to sin and self destruction. The part where the train is passing through people is representing the decision to ride the train and lose yourself in self destruction or choosing to not take the train and put yourself on the path to victory over those things that would destroy your life (represented in the video: alcohol, drugs, sex, prostitution, gluttony, Pregnancy our of wedlock or teenage pregnancy, and suicide) Basically to me the song is trying to provide the message that regardless of what is trying to take control of your life or the situation you may find yourself in, you ALWAYS have a choice, take the train or don't take the train. You have the ability the determine your own direction in life. Don't let the devil determine where you go.
Been waiting for this video and I must say thank you for your shout out to me means a lot to me and I love your videos love John Saxon xxx please stay safe you guys xxx
Spot on! It's not always easy to get the meaning of a song, hearing it for the first time, but you nailed it! I feel like it's my lucky day because you played two great Josh Turner songs! He's got another one out now called " I'm no stranger to the rain", which is a remake of a Keith Whitley song. Also worth a listen. I'm hoping someday you will get around to George Strait. (The king of country) 60 #1 smash hits. I couldn't even pick a recommendation because if you played just one of his #1 hits a week, it would take you well over a year just for that! "The Chair" would probably be a great start! Thanks
There is a story behind this song, that after Josh Turner wrote the song, he bought a map that showed where stars lived and drove to Johnny Cash's home. Knocked on the front door was invited in and played it for Johnny hoping to sell it to him. Johnny's reply was something along the lines of Son people have heard enough songs from me about trains, you ought'a sing it yourself. About the song simple, the train is temptation and it rides on the rails of sin, sin leads to destruction to engineer is the devil, so cling to God and His Holy name and rise above the temptation and the sin. The long black train is the path of self destruction versus the path to salvation thru the Lord.
Exactly. Satan is the engineer.

Another good one of his is Three Wooden Crosses.
