Sixpence None the Richer (also known as Sixpence) is an American rock/pop band that formed in New Braunfels, Texas, eventually settling in Nashville, Tennessee. They are best known for their songs "Kiss Me" and "Breathe Your Name" and their covers of "Don't Dream It's Over" and "There She Goes". The name of the band is inspired by a passage from the book Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis.
Guitarist/songwriter Matt Slocum met vocalist Leigh Nash in the early 1990s. They recorded a demo, which now circulates as "The Original Demos", with bassist T.J. Behling and drummer Brad Arnold at Verge Music Works recording studio in Dallas, and eventually an album, The Fatherless and the Widow, for the independent label REX Music in 1993. The record featured Chris Dodds (a member of Love Coma, in which Slocum also played guitar). Shortly after the release of The Fatherless and the Widow, Slocum left Love Coma to pursue Sixpence None the Richer full-time. The band added Tess Wiley (guitar) Joel Bailey (bass) and Dale Baker (drums) to tour in support of The Fatherless and The Widow. On this tour the band toured the US, opening for the Choir, the newly reformed 10,000 Maniacs, Audio Adrenaline, Pray For Rain, Over The Rhine, and more. In the fall of 1994, the band left for their first tour of Europe. The club and festival tour saw them performing with bands such as the Proclaimers, Newsboys, Julie & Buddy Miller, and many more. The band added J.J. Plasencio (bass) for 1995's This Beautiful Mess. Both albums were produced by Armand John Petri, who also managed the band from 1993 to 1997. Shortly after the release of This Beautiful Mess, Wiley left the band.
In 1997, the group signed to Steve Taylor's label Squint Entertainment and released a self-titled album, which slowly began garnering attention from a wider audience in the mainstream industry. Although Placencio played bass on most of the album, he left the band before it was released and was replaced by Justin Cary, who joined the band around the same time as second guitarist Sean Kelly.
In 1998, "Kiss Me" was released as a single, propelling Sixpence None the Richer into the national pop spotlight. That year the song was also featured in the film She's All That. In 2001 the film Not Another Teen Movie used the song in a parody. "Kiss Me" was also played on the WB teen drama Dawson's Creek in episodes #2-06 "The Dance" and #2-18 "The Perfect Wedding," and is found on the show's first soundtrack CD, Songs from Dawson's Creek (Volume 1) and also played at the televised wedding of England's Prince Edward.
In 1999, the band recorded a cover of The La's' "There She Goes", which became their second hit single and propelled them into the limelight again. Sixpence appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and numerous morning talk shows. "There She Goes" was added to subsequent pressings of the self-titled album.
In 2000, Sixpence None the Richer contributed the song "Us" to Today Presents: the Best of Summer Concert Series CD, which raised money for the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance. Later that year, the band recorded a Japanese version of "Kiss Me", which was released exclusively in Japan on an EP with numerous versions of the song, as well as remixes of other songs on the self-titled album.
The band had a follow-up album ready to release, but their label Squint Entertainment started to fall apart, leaving the band in limbo for several years. Finally, Squint Entertainment folded and that album, Divine Discontent, was released in October 2002.
Baker left the band before that album's release and was replaced by Rob Mitchell. The album itself differs significantly from the first pre-release version of it that had circulated: the songs "Us," "Deeper," "Don't Pass Me By," "Too Far Gone," "Northern Lights," and "Loser Like Me" were cut, and "Down and Out of Time," "A Million Parachutes," "Tonight," "Waiting on the Sun," and a cover of Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over" were added. All of the unreleased songs were eventually featured on singles or compilations, with the exception of "Deeper". Two of Divine Discontent's singles, "Don't Dream It's Over" and "Breathe Your Name", received significant radio airplay and appeared on various Billboard charts.

Leigh Nash is one of the most underrated singers ever. She has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard
Like a warbler bird
i fully agree.
So true, was this performed on Letterman?
I think Letterman was on CBS. This may have been Leno or Conan O'brien@@michael-dy8tz
Thank you!@@Svelasc2
April 2024, first time had heard this song in the taxi in Kuala Lumpur and fell in love
I love her. She is so beautiful. This is true beauty, not fake hollywood beauty. Amazing.
xxsquall79xxx what about katy perry with that lip syncing flute skills?

@@pintorthepintor3964 Katy Perry COULD not walk her path!!!!!!!!
she melts my heart
She would best Katie Perry in a fight cause she’s real… and connected to the world
The last days of that late 90's sound I really miss late 1997-2003
Correct me if I'm wrong but you must be around 35yrs old ..just saying those are my jr high- high school yrs :)... and these songs just make me fly back to those wonderful days. Best regards
Back when Conan was killing
but... better times than that are coming quickly
I love her voice, her face, her calmness and simplicity. She's breathtaking and this song is absolutely sweet.💕
For 30 years I have had a Crush on Leigh and her voice
Christian Rock at its finest!! They are singing about Jesus Christ and Jehovah God!!!
God does not exist.
@@TheJacksnipe Neither do you!!
Awww… you two guys are fun🤓
This is a pop song not a religious song so it research 😂😂😅
The little smile at 0:35 melts me.
Me too. I think, it’s actually at 0.36.
Best version of this song and Leigh's best hair style ever.
After being so hooked up by their 1997 self titled masterpiece there was never an album that I awaited more than Divine Discontent. They aired Breathe Your Name on the radio so many months ahead the album release and life was beautiful back then.
Is she some kind of angel or what?
It is unknown what she really is. Perhaps that will be revealed some day.
Yes, she looks like and sounds like one!
she really sparkles and has a wonderful voice and smile. i believe it is Jesus shining into and through her life.
She knows how to carry herself with a certain amount of grace.

Excellent song all time. Everyday i im this place. I feel this way. I could only breathe your name❤.
I never saw a such beautiful woman in my life like Leigh Nash!!
You're not kidding.
Thats correct, i will change my comment when i will see someone more beautiful....
She's so beautiful in this performance.
Leigh was angelic in this.
its nice hearing vocals that are just as good on CD as they are in public. its rare.
You should try listening Within Temptation then. Not sure if you like that kind of music, but you should at least try to listen to the album version and the live version of one of their songs. I would suggest the song Somewhere since that is one of their calmest songs
that angel face, so beautiful and such a sunshine to me. Though there're bunch of beautiful and hot gals at college, no one can look as innocent and adorable as she. She just made my day.
Her vocals are amazing ! Sadly this song was quickly forgotten...
Forgotten? LOL! Where do you people get that crap?
Guess you think she's "under rated" too?
Shopping in my local market I hear this and other Sixpense' tunes all the time!
She's great, people who appreciate her style think she's great and we know this song like they know Jingle Bells at Christmas. Please.
Forgotten? 2020 here and in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. Sad times but this song makes me feel good and brings back good memories of years ago.
@@mikeballesteros2275 good to know , her music still airing there . I love her and the band so much, and hope they can gather again and make new album. Popetic lyric to glorify or God.
Not by me. I've got the album and then bought six pence own album

She's not even expressing any pain or anything while she's singing because she's breathing out her pure high notes.
Need some Grace.... Amen! I can only breathe your name!! 🙌
She is beyond beautiful. Wow!
The most beautiful song that exists in my heart
Tuneless??? Do you have ears? This song has a beautiful, subtle, enchanting melody! Bless Sixpence None the Richer for continuing the style of wonderful bands like The Sundays and Innocence Mission. Love this song! Thank you for sharing it :)
an Angel living between the mortals.... that voice melt my heart in just seconds...

I love her
I'm in love with her in this video, I want to marry her! I'd give anything to hear her breathe my name.
I met her and she is kind, warm and generous.
So did I, and I can say the same. Their bass player (at the time), J.J. Plasencio, was that way as well.
Yeah me too... Very generous she gave me onions..
Wow. Lucky you!
@@screamingmimi6660 onions?

She’s a Goddess.
OMFG Leigh Nash, you are so beautiful with a very enchanting voice.
The eyes are absolutely captivating.
With all the boo hockey that gets pushed our way, it is so refreshing hearing this . Great music, great style, super sweet voice.
These are the best comments I've heard about any musical group. And I agree with each and every one of these positive comments. Truly what is right with American music.

Her expressions, eyes, voice are outstanding ...
This song is so well written and the video is incredible. Leigh Nash is so approachable and charming. Had a chance to chat about the Smiths with her. Find her version of I won't share you.
I 100% love sixpence, this song is amazing - A lot of their songs are about religion in some way or other but I still love them. Shes got such a nice/unique voice and she's really pretty.
Listening to this haunting song is experiencing a transcendental voyage through another world, within some other reality. Shimmering radiance, majestic and beautiful. Totally luv hearing and seeing and feeling this dazzling song and music video.

Leigh and Matt ARE a team, at least when they were making this music. This song is stunningly powerful. I remember hearing it twenty plus years ago in a grocery store and before Google. Don't know exactly how I found it but l bought the album and fell in love. Beautiful! Just beautiful.
What u mean 😅there a team of course they are they created the band they knew each other since high school the rest of the guys join the band there is no sixpence without Leigh and Matt Even when they broke up for a while Matt was always working with Leigh on her solo projects cds 😊but know that band has a new album 💿
Such an under-rated song. This is elegance and grace wrapped into one.

She's so graceful and smiles like such and angel when she sings. 😢
Leigh.....ah...the memories......those amazing green eyes.......the love....Paris!
Beautiful Angel with Beautiful voice and God given talent . She is so Perfect.
She's damn beautyfull!!!
My favorite singer has always been and always will be Elvis Presley, but Sixpence achieved equal importance when, through the voice of the Leigh Nash and instrumental so well done, I was transposed from my sadness to a feeling of incredible improvement.
Hugs from Brazil.
Beautiful show !!!
Note 1000 !!!
I LOVE this song and her voice just sounds classic, like a singer from maybe the 30s or 40s with the raw beauty in this one... This one IS definitely about God...
"Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God." ~Romans 5:1-2
I remember seeing this back in 2002 I was so in love with Leigh Nash
A more beautiful voice has never existed!
