I gotta get out and find a bay laurel! These walkthroughs are so helpful. If you need to pass off any of those seedlings, i have a happy home for them!
if you prune back your grapes 2-3 nodes above the fruit - it will put the energy into the fruit instead of growth. also grapes have suckers like tomatos
@@jacquesinthegarden You're welcome Jacques! Rural Sprout also has a good article written on pruning and trellising grapes. I learnt all of this from my grandpa who had me help him yearly pruning his 30 + year old grape vines.

🌼🐝 👨🌾🌻🐇🌺I’m Back for another update of your beautiful garden. It’s amazing to see the changes in your plants over time. I love watching my garden grow a little each day, that is my favorite part of gardening. I am making garden videos too on my own channel. It’s so fun to have the growth documented over the season. I still have so much to learn in this area. I hope we can learn more from each other!
Omg please let us know what all you grow in the 5 tier. I agree the spinner is mandatory. Can I grow any peppers? I'm assuming no bell peppers. I had cherry tomatoes in mine but worried there wasn't enough room. Id love to hear which varieties work the best for you.
oooh i don't have trypophobia but that avocado pot looked creepy. That aside, the avocado tree we planted on dad's farm lot also didn't survive. The other 16-17 trees we planted did great in comparison. I guess they're really just quite a challenging tree to keep 😢
Loving these updates. Garden looks fantastic. About your avocado tree, do you plan on keeping it in a pot? Or will it eventually end up in the ground? I tried, twice, putting an avocado in a pot and both times it failed. I've had a lot more success planting in ground, 3 out of 3 😋 I was told by my local nursery that the best variety to plant in pots is the Wurtz since it's a naturally dwarf tree.
I am thinking of leaving it in this pot for the year and finding a good place in ground for it next year. I believe "Gwen" is another good container variety.
Jacques, thanks for showing us your garden. You've got a lot going on in that garden. Bayleaf is on my list! I have a question I'm hoping you can answer. What do you know or do you recommend beneficial nematodes in 10b, specifically for fly larvae. With two dogs, I always battle flies during the summer heat and am looking for a way to deal with them. It's not something I've heard Southern California gardeners mention (you, Epic Gardening, CaliKim, etc) so I'm wondering what you think. I read they need to be applied before a rain, so that's a challenge this time of year. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
I've tried them before in the winter timed with a rain storm. It's challenging here because of how dry it is so unless you use a sprinkler to wet everything it will be hard
Is that a mini greenhouse (@13:50) behind you with the okra? Do you grow from seed there, or is it a place to harden off plants? I recently purchased one, and am trying to decide the best way to use it.
I've been using it to grow seeds outdoors Instead of messing around with heat mats and grow lights. I always leave the door open so it can't get too hot though

Gorgeous and inspirational as always. Is that pineapple sage with purple flowers or am I confusing that with fallen jacaranda petals? I am totally sold on growing pineapple sage after watching this, but I’m either finding salvia sage bushes with purple flowers or pineapple sage with red flowers. Can you help guide me to an edible pineapple sage source in the Bay Area or online? Thanks!

The only disadvantage to growing potatoes in the last (bottom) tier of the Green Stalk is that you have to either dismantle the whole thing (tower) to get to the tier to harvest the potatoes or you have to dig around in each pocket and get soil all over the place.
Ok so I was growing tomatoes in a container I can’t remember they variety. Anyway they didn’t make it. I over watered it and the soil became too wet. Which I didn’t realise till it was too late. RIP TOM. I pulled them out after about 9 weeks of growing from already established seedling. I’m growing a heap of chilies and they are doing amazing. I noticed the other day 2 small tomato plants 🌱 growing in with the habanero. I’ve been growing the habanero for around 8 months and have had so many chilies from it. How did 2 tomato plants appear ? Is this something tomatoes do ? They propagate them selves ? Or do I have magic plants ? 😆
It's possible you reused the soil and tomato fell in it and eventually those seeds germinated or a bird ate a tomato and pooped some seeds into your bed 🤣
Hello Jacques. Enjoy your videos! Been liking your work before you started your own channel! What is the name of the netting that you have on the blueberry bush? Does it come in different sizes? I have some hot pepper bushes, but the caterpillars are driving me crazy! Where can I buy that netting? Thanks Jacques.
I've been looking at getting some cold hardy maypop for the garden, flowers are always nice, but just curious how you find the fruit; is it worth it? Love from BC, Canada!
We do personally enjoy the fruit quite a bit, its fun to get so much fruit reliably over many months. Not everyone will like it but its fun to eat and collect a bunch to make something more involved or collect them for juice.
I'm so glad to hear that I'm not the only one to kill an avocado. 🤦🏻♀️😬 That's been my most expensive plant to care for - eek - hoping it'll be worth the investment one day!
Can I cut back flowering kale plant and still eat the new growth? Can I backfill or top up my kale bed? This would mean burying the base of the plant beneath the soil
You can still eat it and some people love eating the flowered tops of the plants! You can bury it somewhat but not sure how much before it gets unhappy
It looked like the tomatoes on your string trellis had more than one leader, are you not pruning suckers and just running additional strings for the sucker stems?
I end up supporting 2 leaders because I am a sucker for more tomatoes. But I also let them grow a bit before removing in case the top leader breaks somehow
Hello! I noticed that you have this pliable metal fencing attached to a wooden stick/pole. What is the fencing called? I currently have a fence around my small garden and in order to work in there I have to reach in or climb over so something like that would work so well!
I love your posts but I'm so confused! I'm in 9b deep south (so humid) but I can't grow the things together that you're growing in 10b. Lettuce, kale, herbs like cilantro + dill, brassicas won't go into the heat (we're already daytime 80s). Tomatoes except for cherries will stop fruiting when days are 90s and nights are 80s so they have to be in ground by early March and producing quickly to beat the heat. Ditto corn (and hard to keep raccoons off of that!). Are your temps so much cooler than ours? We grow all fall-winter-spring but summer is either eggplant, peppers, okra, soybeans or cover cropping until fall planting time.
It is actually quite odd that we are zone 10b but actually extremely temperate. We never get hard freezes but May for context is an average of 68 degrees June might hit 72, July 76 and then August and September are the hot months here when it can get up into the low 80s. Where I am in particular is only a few miles from the coast so we get marine layer air that rolls in and cools everything down significantly.
My grape plants started yellowing on the stems. Also the baby/newer leaves (smaller ones) are like a dusty yellow, almost white color. Jacques would you happen to know what's wrong? Can't seem to find an exact answer with looking it up on the net.
Hmm it can be really hard to tell what's going on with yellowing, from over watering, underwatering, lack of nutrients or even a virus or bacteria! If you can eliminate watering issues try fertilizing after that it will be harder to tell
My zucchini have blossom end rot! But the plant is flourishing it’s huge. I’m so confused?? I read that I should use a fertilizer with calcium. What’s your take?
It might be that it's just not getting pollinated , is it turning yellow and shriveling? Then you should manually pollinate them until more flowers open
I grew pineapple sage a few years ago right next the house it has some of the most amazing flowers ive ever seen but one day my landlord came by and mowed over it 😑
anyone have any tips on keeping red russian kale from flowering? Mine didnt grow stalky like that. I overwintered in new england and got a bunch of growth for a month or two then it flowered :(
It's so different where you are! I can't get over the growth there. It's beautiful. We had one week of record heat in between lots and lots of rain - so much rain. And the temps are cooler than last year (except for that one week) that the strawberries aren't yet giving their best flavor. But every thing is so prolific!
Its very stable here in terms of temperatures but for example right now in may its like 58 at night and 68 high during the day so everything is growing a but slower.
If you have space and you don't mind it always returning let some of flowers go to seed and dry on the plant so that it can self scatter and sow. It seems to like a decent amount of water to produce prolifically
I’d love to see the drinks/cocktails that you make with the pineapple sage, or any other herbs!
I bought a little 10 or 12 oz glass bottle of Pure Leaf Blackberry and Sage out of a refrigerator at Walmart check out that was delicious. Have never seen it again.

It was something I randomly bought on Amazon I think if you search like individual plant netting some options should come up
@@jacquesinthegarden Thanks Jacques. I will try. Many thanks for responding. It’s appreciated.
19:00 not me trying to figure out which plant is called 'baby chicks' 😂
I have a couple of kale plants that are big and sturdy but had mildew on the leaves. Do you think I should try to behead it?
You could definitely try or remove everything but like the last 3 baby leaves
Can I cut back flowering kale plant and still eat the new growth? Can I backfill or top up my kale bed? This would mean burying the base of the plant beneath the soil
You can still eat it and some people love eating the flowered tops of the plants! You can bury it somewhat but not sure how much before it gets unhappy
Very cool! Do you have ties to Bulgaria?
Yes! My parents are from Bulgaria and I have visited many times so I love growing varieties from Bulgaria
@@jacquesinthegarden that is so awesome! My maternal family is Norwegian and everyone still lives over there besides us few Americans. 😂
@@jacquesinthegarden Thanks Jacques! Makes sense
Hello! I noticed that you have this pliable metal fencing attached to a wooden stick/pole. What is the fencing called? I currently have a fence around my small garden and in order to work in there I have to reach in or climb over so something like that would work so well!
Most of it is 2 foot tall 1/2" hardware cloth!
@@jacquesinthegarden OK, that explains everything! Truly sounds like the ideal growing climate. Lucky you!
You guys keep saying you live in San Diego but how did you get sooo much space? :)
Lots of old neighborhoods in San Diego fortunately have large lots!
@@jacquesinthegarden ok thanks!
Any tips where I can find comfrey plants. I’ve been to five greenhouses and they don’t carry it and have not heard of it
I think you have to find and order them online, a lot of places or etsy shops will sell you root cuttings.
I grew pineapple sage a few years ago right next the house it has some of the most amazing flowers ive ever seen but one day my landlord came by and mowed over it 😑
That is very sad, such an aromatic plant too!
Jacques!
I'm craving some aerial views!
pretty please ; )
anyone have any tips on keeping red russian kale from flowering? Mine didnt grow stalky like that. I overwintered in new england and got a bunch of growth for a month or two then it flowered :(
Hmm maybe since you have proper seasons the plants actually realized its been two years and flowered, at least that should be their genetic plan.
@@jacquesinthegarden totally makes sense, they barely survived through the winter. Thanks for the great channel and response!
A bit wordy for me tbh
It's so different where you are! I can't get over the growth there. It's beautiful.
We had one week of record heat in between lots and lots of rain - so much rain. And the temps are cooler than last year (except for that one week) that the strawberries aren't yet giving their best flavor. But every thing is so prolific!
Its very stable here in terms of temperatures but for example right now in may its like 58 at night and 68 high during the day so everything is growing a but slower.
Love the way you describe all plants 🪴 💯 by the way any tips for chamomile? You can share thanks 😊
If you have space and you don't mind it always returning let some of flowers go to seed and dry on the plant so that it can self scatter and sow. It seems to like a decent amount of water to produce prolifically
