Hi Debs! It's great to hear from you!
You must be really chuffed to be working in such a fabulous historic setting!
This is a superb spot. The building is great to look at and is both historically and architectually significant from the time factor and indeed from the railway and Clandeboye Estate connection. I just love the brickwork. I'm guessing, -'Gothic' Baronial, -like something out of a Harry Potter film! And there you are doing, a wonderful job of maintaining and heating it and putting it to excellent local use. Everyone's a winner! And you picked up an award from Loyd Grossman no less! That must have been fun!
Yes it would be great to see and perhaps video a walk round of the interior. Thanks for the invite! -Obviously I wouldn't want to intrude on your work schedule or any customers/clients. I presume the building is listed.
I am a well retired teacher. My hobby interest stems from being someone who enjoys filming good news stories about Belfast and beyond. I've made 3000 + short clips for RUclips so far. There is so much good stuff out there, often just sitting, ' almost invisible under our feet'. I'm just a rustic old amateur but people seem to like what I'm putting up on RUclips.
I'm up and down to Bangor/Holywood etc quite a lot. So I'll maybe drop by the next time I'm passing.
      Best wishes
      Tom

The carving on the old station house has the stylised letters 'D' and 'a' under a baron's coronet. This indicated the Baronetcy of Dufferin and Ava.
Hats off to the volunteers who maintain the area for the reputation of the historical significance of this area. Many thanks for your devotion. It is much appreciated.
Frederick Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava commissioned and funded the building of the station and there was a private waiting room for the family. There was also a separate path to a carriage which would whisk him to and from the family home. The station cemented links between Belfast and Helens Bay.
He was a well-travelled man and was favoured by Queen Victoria. He also raised awareness and money for the victims of the Irish Famine during the 1800's after seeing for himself the conditions under which Irish families found themselves.
He named Helens Bay in honour of his mother, Helen Selina Sheridan. There is also Helens Tower on the Clandeboye Estate near Bangor, County Down.

Hi KJ. This is great information. Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to pass it on to my video. I very much appreciate you doing this.
You certainly know your Helen's Bay Railway history!

I found this video fascinating. I work with a chap who used to work on the railways many years ago. He has given me some fascinating stories and places to look for - I didn't know they existed. Thanks for this, Tom, Liked and Subscribed!

Hey KJ. Thanks very much for your kind words or encouragement.
I love meeting people like yourself and the chap you work alongside. You are people who are huge sources of local information. I'm always looking for 'hidden gems' around our countryside. If we don't document them now then the chances are that they are their stories will be lost for good as people pass on.
Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

Hi Andy RUclips is playing tricks with my comments! A stack of old posts have just come through in my comments. I wonder where they have been hiding for the last years!!!!? I'm not getting a lot of posts and then folks think I can't be bothered replying. It's a real pain. Helen's Bay is great the tower can be tricky to find in the summer when you can't see it through the trees.

The station building looks more like a small church. But if the architect was more into Churches, that would explain why. Great video Tom.

Wow amazing, what a wonderful chance meeting with someone so knowledgeable about the area ! I don't think I have ever been to helens bay station but I must have passed through it on the train at some point lol. Absolutely wonderful information here. I must go down there and walk up to helen's tower. I flew my drone at helen's tower just after xmas there, which I have a video of if you are interested. When I go to Helen's tower, I park on the Crawfordsburn road and walk up from there.

Yes LIC what a great laugh we had. Robin is a top man a real gent and his knowledge and enthusiasm are boundless. This man has written books. Yet he said meeting me had made his day! You could easily tell he loved the place.
I always find Helen's Tower difficult to find. The signage to it could be better. This is a new to me way to get to it so I'll try this way too. I'm looking at your drone video of the tower right now. Excellent work, with my non existent drone flying skills I would have been afraid of hitting the trees! lol

Great video Tom , that guy you met certainly knows his onions and
your right about the Harry Potter look.
my e mail playing up again so i will tell you about my rant here.
You probably hear about the Movie House in Belfast is to close
and i think it is such a shame

This old railway station looks absolutely fabulous prawnjohn. I had forgotten about it until your video reminded me. Yes Robin was full of information. He's a great chap.
Yes I had heard about the Movie house. High rates/rentals and parking charges and bus lanes are killing off anything in inner Belfast. People are flocking to out of town locations. Dundonald restaurants and movie place are totally full even during a week night. Belfast City Council will have no inner city shops left if they don't lower rates/rentals and provide more free parking. We rarely venture into Belfast anymore.
