      It isn’t. They pulled it out of their ass. Why would a giant theropod have the same behavioural traits like modern day birds of paradise? The only “evidence” allegedly backing this up is the fact that their arms were flexible, that’s it

    • @pansepot1490
      @pansepot1490 2 года назад +1

      @@hydroxytriptamine3554 why not? No paleontologist claims this is what definitely happened. It’s admittedly speculation, yes, but based on actual animal behavior of descendants of dinosaurs. Mating rituals are common among birds but also present in other animals, that’s why the op said it’s backed by science.
      Personally, what I don’t buy is the fact that the arms are tiny. If the speculation is that they were used for display I would have added a bright flap of skin or a bunch of colored feathers. In short I would have made the sexual dimorphism more evident.

    I think this is all based on two papers I read quite a while back. Quite a few Abelisaurids (the clade Carnotaurus belongs to) had these weird tiny arms. The main argument against the idea that they were purely vestigial is that they are significantly more robust than they should be, and that the overall arm morphology is not homologous amongst all Abelisaurids. That might indicate that they have some level of selection acting on them - if they were purely vestigial, they would have all reduced in the same manner. On top of that, they have significant muscle attachments, which would have enabled a great degree of flexion - essentially, the arms were strong enough to be moved with some level of dexterity. In modern animals with vestigial elements - like Kiwis - there tends to be very little muscle attachment, and the bones are more fragile. In Ostriches however, who have reduced yet strong limbs, the muscle attachments between the scapula and humerus are significant. Male Ostriches use these muscles to puff up their wings for display - both to attract a mate and scare off predators. The main point is that the limb elements of Carnotaurus do not fit the model of vestigiality we see. But whether or not they used their little arms for mating dances is debatable. They have horns for one, and there's good evidence that they used them in intra-specific combat. Why would they evolve two, fairly unique morphologies to achieve the same purpose? I think more research is needed, but Abelisaurid jazz hands are plausible. I've linked the papers for anyone who wants to have a read (might not have access, as I access them through my university).

      I remember seeing a theory the horns were used in "shoving matches" between males
      Perhaps male Carnotaurus would show off to females using their arms, while the horns were reserved for intraspecific "combat"
      Maybe *both* of its weirdest anatomical features were part of courtship, instead of one or the other

    I like the detail of the blue coloring on the undersides of his arms. It's speculative I'm sure, but it's consistent with how animals impress mates today and would explain why Carnotaurus didn't pull an emu and reduce its forelimbs to vestigial nubs.
    Also, I've said this before, but it's nice to finally see a wholesome scene of a predatory dinosaur where it's not killing something/someone. These were real animals that had more than just killer instincts.

    For some reason these lyrics from Try a Little Tenderness come to mind: “You’ve got to squeeze her, don’t tease her.” Seems poor carnotaurus here got it backwards. 🤣

    I love how they have related these dinosaurs to modern animals and birds. I think they have made carno a little too muscular they were quite skinny in real life.

    • @oceanicwhitetip8984
      @oceanicwhitetip8984 2 года назад +13

      Carnotaurus most likely had powerful leg muscles and attachment points in its tail for even more muscles, considering they could most likely run up to 56 kph, it's not surprising that they were depicted as muscular, because you need large muscles to accomplish dome feats.

    • @MsMoonDragoon
      @MsMoonDragoon 2 года назад

      They where not skinny. where the fuck where you getting that? they where powerful sprinters that used their tails for balance. all that muscle and fat is realistic.

      @@oceanicwhitetip8984 I think what op means is that they expected it to be less bulky overall and more athletically-built. I expected the same at first, but knowing the unfathomable amount of research put into this show, there’s probably just something we don’t know but the producers do.
