Betsy - I don't know if you are aware of some of the history of your George Leslie Mackay -- In Grey County, Ontario -- in the former township of Collingwood (now part of the Town of the Blue Mountains) -- Banks (Knox) (Collingwood Mountain) - church is closed
"Before building the frame church in 1874 on Lot 17, Concession 4, Collingwood Township, the Presbyterians in the area worshipped in the
schoolhouse. In the late 1860s, the student minister, George Leslie MacKay, walked the nine miles from his home at Williamstown
(Heathcote) to Collingwood Mountain for the morning service and then returned to Williamstown for the afternoon service. Later in
1872, he went to Tamsui, Taiwan (Formosa) where he served as a dentist and missionary on the Island for twenty-nine years. He became a national hero. He was the founder of the first college, the first hospital and the first school for women on the Island."
from "Banks (Knox) (Collingwood Mountain) in The Churches of Grey Presbytery of the United Church of Canada: Historical Highlights, p.8 (2007) compiled and edited by Janet Iles, maps by Jeff Iles Prepared for Grey Presbytery of the United Church of Canada -- information from “MacKay, George Leslie” Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online and An Illustrated History of Collingwood Township (1979)
Many thanks, Janet! I copied this over to my notes and will look into it further. And I see from the citation that you helpfully provided that you were the author of this article. I may reach out to you with questions later. I appreciate your taking the time to share this information.
