Early on in my photography career, I picked up on one technique that I use on every single image I take now; a technique that I kind of forgot aobut because I do it so sub-consciously. It's this one photography technique that evolves my photography; it lets me focus on the art and the 'why' of creation, and I want to share that with you in this photography video essay.

I found the best channels that taught me "how to shoot" (beyond the common basics), I found other channels that inspired me to go out and shoot, you did both. But not only that, you also taught me how to think and look at the world with my naked lens before even trying to look at it through the lens
You've been the best inspiration to me ever since I've started photography. I'm not a professional or i wouldn't call myself really good, but everything takes time. Thank you🙏🏻❤️
for sure. i hope i can accelerate your journey too! all the best
I came here for photography and instead I'm learning about life. Thanks Pat for sharing your thoughts.
This is such good advice and I’ve caught myself not exercising this and then realizing after editing a photo that “wow this actually isn’t one of my best”. Thanks for the great content as always
Your newsletter this week really resonated with me.
There’s definitely something to letting the hype of an image settle over time to see if it ‘fits’ who you are as a creative.
Recently, I’ve taken to re-editing images taken at least a year’s difference in time, and I’ve noticed differences in skill gained through practice and a more matured sense of style, for lack of a better word. As you said, some stuck (and were reposted with my current editing workflow) and some didn’t.
That whole process feels like true refinement of a creative style, to me at least.
100%. time and reflection are two very necessary things that we need to realise our true style. man, i look back on some of the images and edits that i did way back when, and boy its a great feeling to look at how far you've come.
There's never a need to rush. Your pace is your pace and entirely up to you. Great video 🙏
totally agree. thanks for watching!
@@patkay I believe that the creative process doesn't stop after taking the shot, it continues and as you say the emotional element comes into play. I let images often rest for days till I re-evaluate them. In this fast and easy to consume photography times it's actually the treatment a photograph deserves.
I was in Japan for a month over xmas/new years, and I'm barely into the first week of content. Editing videos and photos isn't quick, and not really having any followers also means I'm not in any rush. I've also always allowed my captures to breathe after a trip. If nothing else, I don't know when I'll be back there, so stretching out 'reliving' it via editing content is a nice way to get longevity from the time I spent there.
So true, and so obvious that I often forget it. My best edits are the ones I came back to. The ones in the heat of the moment are hurried because of the desire to get a finished piece of work.
it's often the most simple and obvious things that can have the biggest impact. totally feel you
Such a beautiful video
Cant thank you enough for this advice mate!!!!
Love this concept. I always get excited when you drop knowledge like this.
“write drunk, edit sober” love the video of today.
i've always loved that line. it's so true
Great advice, I usually don't edit for a few days so that the feelings of that event is gone. This process helps remove your own biases.
100%. objectivity is so hard to come by these days, especially in the world of short-form content
you are the best 😊 great teaching skills
Hi Pat! As always, thanks again for sharing your insights and experience on what it means to be creative. Your videos are always a joy to watch.
Inspirational and great info as always! 🙌🏼🥂
Thank you. I'm just in that point: trying to separate my emotion from the emotion that really emanates from the picture. Not so easy 🙂
definitely takes a lot of practice, but you'll get there!
@@patkay - Thank you. 👍🏻 Actually, with this work, I'm starting to look another way also when I'm taking pictures.
I am not a professional photographer, but I have taken some images that I am proud of. Thank you for a very interesting video. I got a lot out of it.
glad to hear it! and hopefully you make even more images you're proud of!
Let it simmer!
sometimes a nice reduction makes the meal taste richer 😌
Great video dude!
thanks for watching!
Please keep the spoken versions coming.
i will! some people dont like that im recycling content, but they're definitely very different approaches for different audiences. glad you like it!
For me I need to have music with me if not I can't take good pictures!
i feel this, especially when taking street photos by myself
