Even though, IIRC, Boston Dynamics of as late has moved away from the military market, it seems that its bot might be the closest one that might be applied to that market in that it can run, jump, recover from trips, and lift heavy objects.
Thus it would be interesting to see if it could say how a grenade (or a baseball for that matter) and if so how far.
And from the video that action it is making to place those parts does not look all that much different from one of holding a rifle.
And for a military application, the additional cost may not be all that much of a discriminator in that often performance trumps cost in the military market.
Endurance might be a problem but the bot could ride to where it is needed (via a Humvee, Truck, IFV, or even e-bike or e-unicycle )and only need to walk, run, or crawl a short distance to attack say across an open field or through a woods.
And in regard to number, if one were to create an army of robots, say 10,000 to say 30,000 or more that could be a big market.
Also, there seems to be a lot of synergism between Atlas and Spot as well and Robot dogs are being actively being looked at for combat applications.

Atlas will never be made at scale, hydraulics have too many problems. If your hydraulic equipped skid steer has a leak, it's leaking into the dirt, you fix the leak, and carry on. If Atlas blows a hose while vacuuming your house...You need new carpet, furniture, paint, blinds, etc. Tesla & Figure have shown us the better path forward, it's all electric.
I would assume Boston D has an all electric humanoid secretly being worked on. If they don't, they will be no different then Polaroid or Blockbuster, relegated to irrelevancy.

It is interesting to me that the Boston Dynamics humanoid robot (ATLAS) and the Tesla humanoid robot (Optimus) are trying to emulate human movements INCLUDING human restrictions of articulation, whereas Chinese Humanoid (like) robots, such as Unitree H1, include a range of movements humans can not achieve, which makes the Chinese robots more versatile as robots but less able to use tools designed for humans (therefore less easy to displace humans without tooling changes) - obviously there are applications for both types of humanoid robots, and one type will suit some applications better than the other (currently), but there is much more development between such robots become everyday appliances (yes, that is what they are) and now...

Tesla has the manufacturing capability to mass produce Optimus at a reasonable price. Also Tesla built the Tesla bot with mass production in mind. Each part in the prototype was chosen and developed based on the ability to mass produce it at a cheap price point. The Boston Dynamics Robot is extremely expensive and was built simply for research. I personally think there is zero chance it will be manufactured any time soon. Of course, time will tell.

You can't use a welder as a washing machine, right? So you wouldn't be in the market for a "construction" `bot when you're shopping for a personal "valet" `bot. `Proper tool for the job, right? SO get a grip already! It's ALL still in the "Get It To Work" phase. When they do, it'll be the "size it properly" phase. Only then they can work on getting the semantics in line with the set of tasks the TOOL is intended to preform, and only Then, it'll be marketable to the population... And that appears to be some time off in the future.

    Has rented atlas
    And it's slam os
    From Boston dynamics
    And because they're warheads
And they want to be specific around them
And because the model already exists in the companies data
They don't have to wait around for atlas to learn everything
The company just decided to upload its parts inventory into the slam os
Because that's what makes code and APIs. So adaptable.

I think this part of the video, as well as the video showing a bunch of robots dancing lightly, are fake.
Boston Dynamics has a strange habit of never showing robots in positions that overlap with humans when they perform active movements such as dance or parkour.
This is very strange since they advocate collaboration between robots and humans.
Perhaps their robots can do individual tricks such as jumps and backflips. However, it may not be possible to successfully complete a series of tricks without changing joint settings or control programs.
That's probably why they decided to have the robot perform in a VFX that faithfully reproduced the inside of the studio, the view from the windows, the sunlight, etc. Driving away humans who are difficult to synthesize into videos.

Also an armed version of this robot with a smart AI would cost almost 500k US Dollar, just a single emp granade could destroy a robot or even a squad like that in seconds.

Boston dynamics focused exclusively on walking and running and balance. The Tesla bot advantage of Teslas vision system which is about all it has right now. Teslas walking system is just a stop gap system to move the bot so they can work with the vision system.
Tesla will map in real time.
Both companies are still rather basic though.
While it's not mentioned often, bds robot will fall on it's face when it's predictions are wrong. It doesn't truly read in live data and balance. The real solution for this is with sensors feeding info into AI chips. Well, they will eventually figure it out.

ahh the man child idea of having humanoids robot everywhere

    • @gweneth5958

Not quite. I am female and I am into technology since my childhood. I've been already on a C64 at age of 4 and was fascinated by it. To me the development in robotics and AI is most incredible and I am so glad that I am able to witness this progress in robotics and AI. I am not fond of Boston dynamics partnering with the military, but that has nothing to do with the robot itself. And if this passion has something to do with a child's idea, than I am very happy that I am still a child at heart.

Not exactly a man child idea, chill with the projection and mass generalization Dan.
Not to mention trying to force your beliefs onto other people like mentioned by other commenters.
And this is the worse they are going to be, "they're slower than my nan" for now they are... But they'll be faster than all of us soon enough like it or not. As parts get better, as the engineering gets more effective. As the AI improves... Grow up and get over it, quit acting ironically like a man child yourself.

I find all systems of robot nav tend to create mass amounts of mostly inaccurate data
    But through that.
Emerges.... one single .. more truth that all the others
Not exactly a ground truth but good enough for that fraction of a second
Like using shrodingers equation to isolate lie groups for particle formation
Like..... all the mistake data, is brought into existence just long enough to create a field in virtual spacetime.
From which you can momentarily hang a reality...
    And feasible future upon
    Mmmmm makes me wonder
    Is space time fundamental
Or is just our mistaken observations of it

  • @charliebaby7065

And that moment it catches itself falling around that corner
    Lol
Sure catches our eye don't it.
    But the truth is.
It's slam slash nav system slash response architecture
    Does that CONSTANLTY.
as it's calculating it's movement versus gravity over time
And especially after every time it's foot hits the ground and other foot pushes off
It's always planning a new path of about 8 steps I think.
And after each step it should calculate how far off real world physics threw the system from that first predicted 8 step projected path.
And then tosses that now 7 step path. And formulates a new path towards success
    Never stopping
    Never succeeding
    Yet
    Never failing
It's all these little factors of mystery and unknowns that makes this such a worthy field to face head on
And makes doing so, so rewarding to us nerds.
