Two hard leetcode questions for an entry level position at a startup is crazy. I would literally cry.

yeah, it is fcking bullshit. they are nothing more than brain teasers and only became popular because google used to ask brainteasers on interviewers. they then realize they have nothing to do with candiates ability to perform the job so they then combine brain teaser with coding and viola, we have leetcode. before that, companies ask very real down to earth coding questions.

Just do the best you can, then go back later and see if you can eventually solve it just for the challenge.

Thank you for sharing this story, it was v relatable and it's nice to see others share a similar experience. One time during a career fair my freshman year, I stood in line for a big name company to hand them my resume. Turns out they asked me a leetcode question on the spot. It was a simple linked list question. But since I hadn't done any leetcode, I just stood there and froze. I proceeded to say I needed to use the restroom and I never went back in that line lol. 3 years later, I worked full time as a software engineer in a mid-size company. 1.5 years after that, I went into FAANG. 2.5 years after that, I quit and now I'm figuring out what's next for me. Everyone's journey is different!

A real slap in the face is when you step up and pass the tough project, then later learn the actually work is severely below your ability.

The only leetcode questions besides the "easy ones" I ever passed were ones that I did before. I couldn't believe my luck every time it happened, but it did happen. I guess that didn't really matter in the end because apparently other people also managed to pass them just fine. So your mileage may vary.
The most important thing is to be able to communicate your ideas clearly and effectively. That is ultimately FAR more important than getting the correct algorithm on the board. I've been asked hard questions that I couldn't even get a solution down but still manged to get the job. Why? Nobody else even remotely qualified applied. It's all supply and demand. You need to do things nobody else is doing and then excel while doing them. That's a hard task, but it's basically what is required from what I'm seeing right now. It might honestly be easier to work for no pay and turn that into a full time job, than passing interviews that hundreds of other people also applied for.

The moment a recruiter asks me a Leetcode question is the moment I ask "What does this have to do with real world software solutions?", get up and leave.

Thanks for sharing. I can't even count how many interviews I botched during my internship placement and final placement. The first in person interview I did had the interview ending on the note, "So what do you even know? And why did you apply here?" (It was a electrical engg company who for some reason chose CS branch students and not even IT branch, which would be more suited).
But since then, I've managed to get a job, leetcode is still beating my ass.

The second hard question takes me about 2 hours to solve, and about 123 lines of code in C# 😅

I think interviewing is stressful in general. It's hard to regurgitate useless technical jargon under pressure.
