I went to school in Linlithgow. My history teacher said the assassin carried out other assassination attempts, presumably in France, but failed. He may indeed have been an early example of a professional hitman. His advantage in Linlithgow may have been that he knew the ground, and this helped him both shoot Moray and escape.
My goodness, nine illegitimate children! Where did he find the time? Also did he claim them all and support them? The assassination was truly harrowing. I imagine it scared the people when they realized they could be murdered by an unseen hand while traveling in the street Thank you again for a fascinating story
Two facts that just bumped into each other: The mothers of both Elizabeth and James were executed by beheading! Like everyone here, I knew about Ann's and Mary's headless ends, but I had never put them together. What an unlikely heritage for two crowned monarchs, one succeeding the other, to share! I wonder if they themselves marveled at the unlikelihood. 🙇🏼♀️🪓💀
Loved this very much. Thanks once again. Good to see it all in my mind while you are talking. I live in Glasgow at present , so am familiar with landmarks. We visited Dumbarton Castle when our three kids were younger. I would recommend the Castle but with older kids as there are lots and lots of stairs! We all slept well that night!
I’m not sure if this is just a coincidence of the last name, but is this James Hamilton an ancestor of Alexander Hamilton? I pulled out my copy of Ron Chernow’s book to see, and it does mention Alexander’s father having relatives back in Scotland. But I can’t tell if they’re related to this James Hamilton or if it’s just a coincidence.
I knew Mary Queen of Scots had supporters in England, but I had no idea that, after she fled, there were still people in Scotland supporting her to this degree.
Love your history stories, always interesting. Thank you.
Thank you!
Dangerous times, indeed! Thanks Claire.🫅👸
Thank yoU!

Wow. I had not heard of this. So much unrest in Scotland. Fascinating. Thanks Claire.😊And I see I have been mispronouncing Moray all these years.

You're welcome!
Fascinating
Thank you!
That's sad...I didn't know he was killed.
Yes, poor man!
Wow. It’s so sad when decent people fall victim to factionalism. Thanks for the story.

I really don't know and it's quite a common name. Sorry!
Fabulous
I visited Lithgow in 2018.
I've never been, but would love to go and visit all these sites linked to Mary, Queen of Scots and her story.
Is this the "Bonnie Earl o'Murray" from the old song? I guess not.
No, that was James Stewart, 2nd Lord Doune, 2nd Earl of Moray (c. 1565 - 7 February 1592), who was murdered by George Gordon, Earl of Huntly.
@@anneboleynfiles Last words after his face was slashed with a dagger, "You have spoilt a better face than your ain, my lord."
@@anneboleynfiles So many similar names ! It' confusing. Thanks!
King James V of Scotland was a most hard-working man, with all those illegitimate children. And he died relatively young... Perhaps worn out...

Thank you. Algorithm bump for you too.
