    Know of any other great MTG Turn 1 Wins? Let me know!

    • @Yakuo
      @Yakuo 2 года назад +11

      In this case, Nikachu, the only winning move here is not to play IMHO. This entire experience is predicated on one person feeling amazing, and the other feeling like garbage with no agency. The beauty of MTG is that it is not a fancy solitaire/coin flip game disguised as a TCG. Not only is this not a good display of what is possible in the modern MTG format, it doesn't look good on the individuals who created a deck specifically to do this to another player. I ask anyone, where is the fun in this? Where is the competitive integrity? If MTG Arena standard turns into this, I will leave and find a new TCG as it would mean I am no longer playing a 2 player game, I'm just participating in the illusion of a game specifically designed to make me feel frustrated and helpless. No thank you, and I advise anyone that respects themselves and cares about their mental health to stay far away from this. This is not what trading card games are, this is malicious solitaire with an unsuspecting, unwilling participant. It's hell, go there if you wish. The turn 1 win for anyone in this situation is to leave this environment that is filled with this possibility and these types of individuals. The MTG space is bigger than just 1 format. OM

      Surprised there wasn't a flash-hulk mention. That deck could kill on turn 0 with gemstone caverns. Was it not legal in a format that people ever played on MTGO? I know flash got banned pretty quickly, but there was a time that people actually played the deck, right?

    Played a Lotus
    Played a Ruby Mox
    Played a Ruby Mox
    Played a forrest
    Tapped the moxes, tapped the forrest, sacced the lotus

    Thanks Nikachu good video.
    As a really old magic player, we used to play magic each week, from 1997 to say 2009. There was about 6 of us, who would play legacy, as we bought cards casually over the years.
    Eventually though, there was more and more of these turn 1 wins and it just broke the game for all of us. It just left a sour taste, losing in the first turn especially but a turn 2, 3 or 4 loss, just robbed the fun out of the game for us.
    A couple of us, started looking for other games.
    We discovered that there was in fact a ton of different tabletop games.
    I think our first non magic game was the meh! Last Night on Earth (as I was a huge zombie fan boy at the time before that genre became over saturated) which eventually led us to BGG.
    Here we discovered an entire world of stuff. We quickly got Puerto Rico then Agricola and it just went from there.
    As much as we all hated these turn one wins, I suppose ultimately they were a good thing for me personally, as they led to me and my gaming group discovering other board and card games.
    As good a game as MTG is/was and I'll still play it with my creaking collection, I've never really been inclined to buy any new products, mainly because of the bad feeling it left me with, with these 1 turn win situations.

    The thing that bugs me the most about the Cascade rule change post Tibalt is they should have done the same as an addendum to restricted search effects. Emergent Ultimatum wouldn't have been nearly as backbreaking (it would have still been good) if you couldn't cast Tibalt off of it because only the search was restricted in the card's text. The rule change would have been basically the equivalent as the Cascade one: if an effect would allow you to search for a card and cast it, and you find an MDFC, you may cast any side that meets all of the requirements and restrictions of that effect. In fact, a rule change like that would have prevented the need to change Cascade's specific rules.

I eventually moved up to adding some Seinger Vampires, inholy strengths and dark rituals, freast of the unicorns. It was pretty great getting a first turn vampire on it. Knew one guy who was gifted a box and binder FULL of cards. It had like 4x mana flares, dual lands and a freaking royal assasin with tons of othsr uncommon cards. I just had to use my connections to sell 40$ worth of cards and those mana flares sold insanely well and i had the 40$ in no time and thd rest of the collection to myself. I had a (legit) turn 1 kill with my enchantress deck. Went 2nd. Played Forest, then Fastbond (play as many forests as you like, each beyond the first deals you 1 damage), 3 Forests, Crucible of Worlds (3 cost, you can play lands from your discard pile), Zuran Orb (0 cost, sac a land for +2 health) ... and right here I'm at infinite life. Sacrifice a land for 2 health, play it for 1 health. Also infinite mana because I can tap it before discarding it. And my 8th card, forgive me because it's been a couple of decades since I played MtG and I can't remember the name, but it was an artifact (I believe) that allowed me to pay X to cause a player to discard X from the top of their deck into their discard pile.
    I literally decked my opponent on the first turn.
    That wasn't my main kill mechanic, it was just one I had in there for fun. Primarily I utilized enchantments to draw my entire deck within the first few turns and used Lone Wolf (can deal combat damage to opponent as though it was not blocked) + some crazy buffs to swing for a couple hundred with lifelinks.
    My google-fu has failed me. If anyone recognizes the card I can't remember, I'd appreciate it. My deck was green primary / splash white / some artifacts. Mostly enchantments, very few spells (tutors only, I think, oh and a permanent removal), some artifacts, and the creatures were a couple of elves to get white mana outside my dual-lands, lone wolves, and enchantresses. So that card woulda had to be either an enchantment or artifact, most likely an artifact. I haven't played that deck in 10+ years, easily, possibly 15-20 years.

    Having an opponent scoop on turn 1 isn't the same as a turn 1 win. The first couple were legit. I played near the start of magic and there was a combo of Ball Lightning, blood lust and Beserk that mad a 20/1 ball lightning before your oppenent got a turn. It also required a black lotus and a mox, but with some of these other card like LED and things you can exile for mana it seems like there's more options.

    • @phoxhole
      @phoxhole 2 года назад

      I came looking to see if anyone else shared that sentiment. Yes, you cast your T0 Tibalt, so now you can... exile the top card of my library on your turn? You still have to pay it's CMC... I'm not seeing the instant win here other than it's a cheeky way to get him into play.

    • @pa_3op
      @pa_3op Год назад

      @@phoxhole T1 Noble implies creature deck and you are T1 looking across the table to something saying «Oh, hello, I can steal anything relevant you can play from now on, while keeping my loyalty high otherwise with steady stream of card advantage». Even worst case, if it's Bogles (which is unlikely with Noble start though possible), it's still insanely hard to overcome. So yes, it's not looking like T1 win, but against creature decks it's pretty much is.

  • @DarkestFiction

    I'm so glad that the rules changed for Valki/Tibalt. Getting hit with that garbage was so unfun. It doesn't crop up much anymore, but I really think they need to change how Valki interacts with Bring to Light still, because you can still BtL Tibalt into play, and it's still as unfun as anything. But with all the T3feri, Hammer, and Omnath shenanigans running around now, it's less likely to happen.

    • @Xoulrath_
      @Xoulrath_ 2 года назад

      It's at best a turn 3 Tibalt though. That's just a one turn difference, but it matters a lot more than that would seem. In order for thst play to happen, the Tibalt player has to be using some form of ramp to get Bring to Light cast by trun 3 with 5 colors of mana.
      There are plenty of ways to shut that down. I know. I play 5C decks often. When I get the mana ramp and it isn't removed, then yeah, my opponent usually loses the game by turn 3-4. When my mana ramp gets removed, I'm at a fairly large disadvantage. Playing 5C ramp decks are absolutely high risk-high reward. They just feel unfair when you lose to them because it is brutally fast.

    I went to a games store once to play some casual Magic. Some guy immediately challenged me, and when the game started, he started milling himself over and over, basically chaining some kind of combo move to get me in a First Turn Kill.
    The trouble is, he took out whatever linchpin card he needed to actually deal the damage or whatever. So he ended up milling himself and decking out without having dealt a point of damage or really offering any offense whatsoever.
    The moral is, scooping is the natural response to being confronted with some smug troll gamer, but clever or not, they are not immune to bouts of stupidity.

    Standard Academy State championships.
    I was running academy along with maybe 20% of the people there (Pre net decks for the most part)
    During the tournament, I got a T1 win and also lost to a T1 win.
    The last game of the tournament was me vs last years champion, both running academy. We were 1-1 and I was on the draw. I had all the pieces for a T1 win IF he didn't have and play Academy T1 (old Legends rules where first Legend on the battlefield was the only one that could be) or possibly Wasteland, but I think I had some petals and a vault so I still could have at least gotten ahead with one tap of Academy and a windfall. I should have mulled, as it was a risky hand with no other lands (the deck only ran 12 or so land, so unlikely to draw into land), but it was a long day, and my brain was fried, so I tried the gamble.
    I lost. Took him like 5 turns (Deck normally won by T3) because he kept a bad hand (which makes my gamble even worse)....but one that had Academy and was safer then mine.
    I almost identical decks (And we both developed on our onw) but I had the better sideboard for the mirror (Tidal Warrior vs a UU 4/1 Island walk that he had) but can't be too upset with second place, losing to the previous year's winner.

    Years ago I used to run/judge local tournaments at Purdue. This was around Mirage/Visions. One type 1 tournament I judged came down to two decks that could one turn win by using Lion's Eye diamonds (it wasn't restricted back then) , moxes, lotus, with Hurkyl's Recall, Wheel of Fortune, Time Twister, & graveyard retreival to build up infinite mana in order to Braingeiyser their opponent out of a deck. The two players knew what each other was running so they knew the winner would be who ever went first in the first game. That person would win 2-1.
    I offered them a compromise. "What if you both played your deck as many times to a one turn win in a row as you could & the other guy had to do it more times instead of us just deciding the match on a single coin flip?"
    The loser ended up being the first player. His deck only won 20 first turn wins in a row before faltering on the 21st try. The other guy got 21 wins & was the tourney winner. Both the guys were happy with a chance to win vs letting luck decide, & the whole shop had a blast watching these 2 amazing decks go head to head.

    While not a first turn win, I played a land destruction deck that could pretty consistently drop Nether Void/Juzam Djinn on the first turn. For those that don't know, Nether Void made all cards cost 3 colorless more (including zero mana cards) so if I dropped a Nether Void on turn the earliest an opponent could play ANYTHING was on thier turn 3 & that was only something that cost 0.
    If I had in hand or drew a Strip Mine by turn 3 it was an auto win as my opponent couldn't play anything but a few lands before the Juzam killed them. This was of course before Alliances was released & a lot of those shenanigans were halted.

      The thing is anyone willing to put time and effort into the game can TRY for such a win. And such combos are not just a limited number of unbearable cards. Combos come in all forms and most can be defeated if you plan ahead.
      Nothing is guaranteed and that's why it's fun when you can pull it off.

    btw, there _are_ ways to legitimately win on turn zero, not prompt your opponent to just scoop on their turn 1: the one I know off the top of my head consists of turn0 mana sources + a gogetcreature instant that lets you search for a _total mana cost_ worth of creatures (converted cost 6, but you only actually need 3 of it) the spell has 2 cost options with the cheap option doing bad things to you if you fail to finish paying it fast enough...but you know where this is going right? you go get at least 1 of your 4 copies of a 1-cost critter that pings for 1 every time an artifact is destroyed (1 black iirc...the color didn't actually matter to the deck so I forget), and go get at least 1 arcbound ravager (2clear), while you're at it you go ahead and grab 0 mana worth of 0-cost artifact critters (ornithopters and the like, you could get exactly 20 into a deck when this deck was designed, dunno if that has changed), resolve the spell placing a ravager, 1-4 pingers, and 0-20 artifact creatures, then immediately sac all your 0-costs to the ravager pumping it up to at most a 21/21 and dealing up to 80 individually targeted instances of ping-you-for-1.
    turn-0 win condition is the mana + the big goget spell + NOT having all 4 copies of your pingers or all of your copies of ravagers in your opening hand...which come to think of it can't actually happen in 7 cards, this deck actually turn-0s a respectable percentage of the time with 1-2 as the norm and 3 turn kills requiring some genuinely terrible luck.
    the deck also plays quite reliably as a weirdly flavored burn deck under normal circumstances since it is literally nothing but mana sources and ways to use that mana to do lots of things at once, particularly with multiple cards that let you go ahead and put a third of your frieking deck onto the field because 20x0=0.

    • @sh41
      @sh41 2 года назад

      The inter turn deck used several loopholes on the rules to generate infinite mana and make it go into the main phase.
      Wall of roots can be used once per turn, but the inter turn is nota turn. Back then you could respond to a creature dying, so you could put as many counters as you wanted... During the inter turn.
      But the mana pool gets emptied at the beginning of the turn... Not really, it was at the beginning of the untap. So you play stasis and go straight to upkeep. Now you can burn your opponent with an instant
