You didn't go on long enough actually! I am also gonna request a more in depth tutorial, but I want to thank you so much for this one too! I haven't used my JS-30 yet and am not used to midi so any more videos on this unit would be greatly appreciated. There really isn't much on the web. 👍👏🙏
great vid Lugo there is little info about this machine,Does the scsi save your set up like Rec2tape or individual samples? on the fence about getting one. Also what the heck does midi scratch do?!? cheers
Yes. The SCSI saves your samples and assignments. Never figured out what the “scratch” function does because there is absolutely zero information about it in the manual. I rarely use the SCSI anymore as I found a hack when using the tape record function - you can insert any sound you want when you save as an audio file in your daw. I guess it time to do a follow up video. The big drawbacks are the fact that it only has 8 voice polyphony and no mute groups - you run out of polyphony really fast. It’s great for loops though.
@@lugo4905 please do! also in case you didn't know ,you can edit faster by pressing Num Pad button then punching in the numbers with pads less wear on the dial.
@LUGO , I've seen from another one of your videos that you also have the Roland MS-1. How would you compare the sound of the JS-30 to MS-1? Maybe create a sampler shootout video with these two Roland samplers?😎
They both sound very different, but if you’re looking for vintage grit, both will deliver that. The MS1 is more of a 1-shot sampler that you can chop and loop on. The JS30 can be a multi timbre sound module that you can play sounds chromatically on. If you’re looking for something close to the Boss SP samplers, then the MS1 is the way to go. If you’re looking for something like an Ensoniq then the JS30 is the way to go

Good video, thanks! I had a couple of questions: Can you play the samples chromatically over MIDI? Can you pan mono samples between the left and right stereo output?
Thank you. I really enjoy your videos too. Yes you can play samples chromatically. Set the low and high key range - you have 5 octaves to do so. You can play multiple samples on the same midi channel either at separate sections of the 5 octaves or overlapping No, you can’t pan the samples This sampler is very similar to the Akai S20 in its workflow

My question is about the SCSI2SD and why the W-30 format? Was this just an extra $100 SCSI you had laying around, did you have to partition it? That SCSI2SD is the most attractive (2nd to the sound) simple add-on I've seen for updating these older samplers.
The W30 was just the format file that I had that worked. I’m sure that if you’re savvy with formatting SCSI2SD, them you could format it specifically to the JS30.
You first hold down the track number button then press the pad you want to assign it to while continuing to hold down the track number button. The pad that you choose doesn’t have to be empty.
On more question. The scsi device you have hooked up to the back, is this one. SCSI2SD v5.5 Plug-In Drive? Currently I’m using a Zip drive but would love to use a sd card instead.
Is it worth it to buy a scsi drive? It's supposed to have a different resolution for the different sampling times. The shorter time having a higher resolution.
I think it’s convenient. However, you really don’t need it. The save to tape option is rock solid. I’m not sure about the different resolutions of the scsi - I’m sure that if you were transferring files from your computer that you’d have to change the bit rate to 8 at 44.1k sample rate. I sample all of my material into the JS and never transfer files.
@@lugo4905 That's good to know about the save to tape option. So you can just save it to any audio recording device right? I wish I would have known about that when I bought my js-30 in 2001.
