I come from Bach and Luther along with Lutheran Churches and Colleges and pipe organs. Invariably, I bring out the snob in the other guy when I mention Virgil Fox. Here I stand; i cannot recant. Fox is not only the best organist of the lot; he's the best one-person musical show you could ever have had the pleasure to experience.
A friend of mine and myself were in the store that day to visit Nelson Buechner when we ran into Virgil and his mother. This was a nice interview and we were indeed fortunate.
The word "UNIQUE" was custom-crafted for such as Virgil Fox! How might one count the ways? Peerless musician; music scholar; larger-than-life personality; raconteur par excellence? Surely, these and many more. Although he is gone now into the Great Organic Beyond, he lives-still on shellac; on vinyl; in magnetic tape, on film and video interviews such as the one showing above. His power to effect us and generations to come will always be. All hail Virgil and be thankful to the stars above, that WE were when HE was!!! . : .
When much younger, our Dad was dazzled by Virgil Fox at an organ recital. Then my sister & I were both dazzled by Virgil Fox, at a much later organ recital as well! He was a fantastic showman, and could play the most arduous toccata with ease!
A wonderful interview that I have seen several times but did not comment until now. This is really a special pipe organ and the concerts are fun to hear on such a large instrument. Someone once told me that the wiring alone is long enough to go to the moon and back several times. Wow! Not sure how true that is but I don't doubt it!
If this recording was in 1979, it was a year or less before his unfortunate death due to cancer. Him being the king of Bach is quite an understatement, as well as king of organ.
Does anyone know if THIS opening recording of Gigue Fugue (BWV 577) exists in complete (and uninterrupted) form? Oh wow...I would LOVE 😍😍 to hear that complete and in stereo without voiceover. 🥺 There's a couple out there (on this channel included)...but Wannamaker's has it's own "unique" sound...

Long live the spirit of Virgil Fox. He still is........... second to none. !!!!

some where between Richard Wagner and Virgil Fox interpretation of Liebestod Love Death is the very soul of life.
