Splitting Alan and Ellie up was a big mistake IMO. Alan's whole arch in the original film brought him to the realization that he can be a great father and that he and Ellie would start a family. And making his motivation in this film being money YET AGAIN shows a real lack of originality. Great review as always, Oliver!
Yeah, Speilberg went out of his way to contradict the book (the books quality is comparable to the movie but in some parts better) by having them be a couple instead of colleagues.

I doubt that was the intention but it's really aggravating to feel, not even like you could've skipped the first but that you *should've* skipped the first as it seems to retconn (it doesn't but it feels like it) the entire arc of Dr. Grant from the original.

Albert C.W. Chessa well said my friend. I personally love the way he arranges both trailers in each video. He gets the right stuff in and sets the mood perfectly.
As much as I loved seeing Sam Neill back as Alan Grant, it annoyed me that he wasn't married to Ellie and that HER replacement was the infinitely annoying Amanda Kirby. Sam deserved a way better film to end on. Also, fun fact, the original idea for the film's climax was the Spinosaurus facing off and being killed by the Raptor pack. But the filmmakers reasoned that if the Spino could kill a T. rex quickly, then the Raptors wouldn't be much of a threat, ultimately depriving the film of a satisfying finale.
Oscar Stainton it would have been awesome. And it's a nice twist on the ending of the first film. There the humans are saved from the raptors by the t-Rex. Here the raptors are the heroes saving the humans from the spinosaurus.
He didn't want kids she did so she married someone that gave her what she wanted if Ellie & Grant stayed together they would've ended up divorced because she pressured him into something he didn't want.
Catspaw, Honestly, I never saw it that way. As a kid watching the first film, my impression was that his time spent with the kids made him more open to having a family with Ellie. They had great chemistry, and everything in the film was hinting towards that for Grant's arc. Having that relationship upturned nullified both that ending and his arc.
@@oscarstainton Yeah, pretty much. It's the time-tested problem of "well if a character is in a good place in their lives, why would they agree to do the thing that puts them in the plot?" Luckily, Jurassic World 2 solved this problem by not having a plot.
I'm still surprised JP3 had the balls to kill off the franchise's main star in the first 30 minutes. Like it or hate it it's pretty bold to kill the Rex.

Man, I remember this being the first movie I’ve walked out of the theater disappointed as a kid. Despite that, I did watch it a lot as a kid when it came out on DVD.
This production gave my old boss a lot of money. They bought a bunch of trees from his nursery to make the airfield on the “island” look more rustic. Then they returned them all when they were done. He was pretty happy about the whole thing. If you go to Oahu the Dillingham airfield on the north shore is where they filmed parts of the movie. Great skydiving there too if you’re interested.
I gotta say a lot of people say this movie sucks but I always quite enjoyed it. It's definitely not as good as the first one but it's impossible to do better. It's just an enjoyable yet flawed sequel.
Its an entertaining ride, personally I prefer it to JP2 because that film is chock full of annoying actors, dialogue and irritating scenes. The moment they bring the injured t-rex into the trailer always winds me up as its so stupid and then it starts making that god awful annoying sound.
If they were the villains of the movie, it would've worked because this movie lacked a structural narrative in that it lacked a climax. Not just that, there was no villain( the spino doesnt count), which was why the movie was rather dull and didnt flow well with the entire length of the movie. Its just a series of dinosaurs chasing people plus the bland characters that were not interesting at all besides grant, but in its defense its a good action flick of a good thriller. I loved the pteranadon scene and the spinosaur attacking the cage near the end of the movie but only kept annoying me cuz it keeps cutting back to the kid watching barny which ruin the suspense and intensity of the scene. How the hell am i suppose to feel the sere terror of our characters if you keep cutting back to barny. Come on and the ending was rushed which pissed me off
Same tbh. Although I saw 2 and 3 in close proximity. The first I didn't see in its entirety till a little later but I was well aware of certain scenes.
I saw it as a young adult and I thought it was better than the Lost World, that movie was just too cringy. The banter between Jeff Goldblum and his daughter and wife was especially horrific and then there's the scene where she defeats the raptor with fucking gymnastics.

You forgot to mention Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis for the PC! Was a sweet game with pretty good graphics. Basically you build a Jurassic Park and research dinosaur DNA for new animals at the park, kind of like Park Builder for the GBA. Heard there was a sequel in the works years later, would be cool.

Oliver, the raptor in the plane saying "Alan!" for me has always been THE best part of JP3. Its shows that Alan is traumatized due to his experience in JP1 in a hilarious way, however we then move on to a pretty "meh" movie with a "meh" plot line. Never understood why THIS scene is "the worst" and not the dozens of scene with Leoni screaming. Oh well.
I love JP3 but they need to stop with the divorcing parents theme in every movie. Lex and Tim's parents in JP1 (which was fine bc it wasn't over done). Malcolm and Kelly's mother are clearly not together (which was fine too bc we get a father/daughter storyline which was cool[also she may be adopted idk] ). Billy's parents are ALSO divorced(it plays into the plot I guess, but again? Really?). Jurassic World was just ridiculous with Zack and Grey's parent's divorce being brought up ALL the time. At least Maisy gave us something new with her being a granddaughter/daughter clone.

This is quite a fun movie but the major problem is the lack of any interesting or likable characters other than Alan. There isn't even a large enough cast for their to be many fun deaths.
I watched this at a drive thru in a van with fogging windows requiring constant rubbing to clear up. The hilarious irony escaped me at the time, ie goldbloom trex jeep humor.
I would like to point out, Spinosaurus is only bigger than T Rex by length. It's bite strength is piss poor compared to the latter. As both a fan of this series, and as a dinosaur enthusiast, I can totally tell that they only chose the Spinosaurus because it looked cool.
@@THEremiXFACTOR it is, and though discovered in the mid 90s, I think it was always better understood than Spino, since it has better remains. It's kind of strange they went with Spino instead of Giga, but I'm kinda glad they did, since it let us know about a truly bizarre theropod we might not have otherwise.
Yeah, Jurassic Park III doesn't advance the story in any way and we learn nothing new. But it works pretty good as a well made B-movie, and it knows what it is. Personally, I found the "heroes" in Lost World way more irritating, than the main characters in this.
This movie may have been terrible, but at least it had the balls to show some pretty graphic deaths. Jurassic World hid all of the good stuff behind trees and camera angles.
chris passama it was actually pretty affective, but yeah the one that terrified me in jp3 was the Spinosaur snatches kooper and that was the only scene that was pretty graphic
I loved the Spino in this. Aside from Dinosaur, T-Rex was always portrayed as the big mighty predator of dino movies. It's in a way exciting to see a predator that's bigger, stronger and a lot meaner. This was a good decision so its not a repeat of the first 2 movies.
I've always found it interesting that Grant is so casual when he sees the dinosaurs flying off at the end. The ones that can't fly are harmless as long as no one goes to the island, but the Pterodactylus can go anywhere. They can even attack things like airliners!
Honestly JP III feels a lot like the second and third Tremors movies. The original was a full-budget summer blockbuster with a well-thought out script and memorable characters then the sequels despite bringing back a fan-favorite or two just didn't feel like a proper continuation of the first film. In simplest terms... it feels almost like fan-fiction. Someone saw JP and Lost World and thought "Say... what if THIS happened?"
I vaguely remember seeing a raptor peeking its head in the background during the fence scene. I wonder if anyone else caught that. Only watched this film once but I think it would be fun to return to it some day.
If it weren't for me finding those toy commercials, they would've not made appearances here in this video! Also, I love this review of this movie, and it's not spreading hatred like everyone else did!
If you're a Sam Neill fan, have you seen the TV mini series "Merlin" (now available as a 3 hour movie on DVD)? It's based on a book trilogy of the same name, and is the best book to film adaption I've seen. I'd love to see a "Retrospective" and hear your thoughts about it.
This annoys me no end, cos people reference the Alan thing A LOT, it makes sense! It might be silly, but there's a logic to it. The gymnastics however...*monumentally* stupid. They even set it up awkwardly and it has no purpose whatsoever. Alan's dream shows that he has ptsd, what the fuck was such a dumb scene doing in TLW in the first place and what were we supposed to get from it.
Bloody useless Oh no, the Gymkata Jr scene is just the tip of TLW's shitberg. There's so much more wrong with it. I'm working right now so I don't have the 5 or 6 hours required to type out everything silly about it.
Personally I love Jurassic Park 3, maybe it's because it was the first Jurassic Park I saw but I has always been my favourite Jurassic Park film and one of my favourite films.
There's just something really missing from this one, the sense of adventure isn't really there, it's more of a monster movie than a adventure movie with monster elements. It just seems very lazily wrote and rushed, it's actually quite dark in tone compared to the first two.
I've loved the first Jurassic Park since I was very, very young of course, but I also really liked this one when it came out possibly because I was 10 when I saw it in theaters. However, as an adult I can see that it has one of the dumbest plots of all time. However, that second script idea about the pteranodons getting out and killing on the mainland sounds pretty intriguing. Maybe the movie could've been a reverse Lost World where the first half has dinosaurs attacking in civilization and the second half is the main characters ending up back on the island as they try to figure out how the pteranodons got out, and of course dino chaos ensues.
Exactly. Don't understand the hatred it gets (inb4 someone mentions the gymnastic scene cause that somehow is the most implausible thing to happen in the series and ruins the whole movie).
The laboratory scene is an interesting plot point that was part of the 2nd book (The Lost World), which Spielberg completely ignored, along with most of the plot of the book. I appreciate that they lifted a lot of scenes from both books for JP3, but they should have been in the 2nd movie, not this one.
The velociraptor dream scene KILLS me...and the Navy and the Marines coming to save them is incredibly hamfisted; with the script justifying that tripe with the throw away line that Ellie's husband works for the State Department...eyeroll. I remember being considerably disappointed leaving the theater that summer, and I remember my expectations not being very high to begin with. But even with all that griping I guess it could be worse. I give it 2.5/5
Retrocade Podcast I think the navy turn up in the first book. A lot of this film was just piecing together bits from the books that hadn’t yet been used
to me Jurassic park 3 is better than the lost world and the first film Jurassic world and fallen kingdom I think they completely missed the opportunity of using the jp3 logo again for Jurassic world dominion
Strip away the dinosaurs and you’re left with a bunch of deeply un likeable characters, none of which are worth rooting for. Couple that with a horribly contrived plot, and an absurd ending (unless there really is a magic phone number any ordinary citizen can ring in the USA that gets a massive Army/Navy presence deployed halfway round the world in under 12 hours).
@@happyspaceinvader508 Ellie's husband worked for the State Department. That's how she got the military to the island. And the ones who showed up could have been stationed (or sailing) near the island
@@PittsburghSportsFan43 Do you honestly think that they would have deployed that much military resources to save them? The ending was anti-climatic. The whole movie was just a lot of running around and screaming which gets old quick. They don't even take the time to setup the action sequences. Just run, run, run.
@@JLDReactions It depends on how high up the husband was in the department. And yes, generally the US government and military don't like leaving American citizens in dangerous places where they'll likely die. Especially if one of them is a child. I didn't have a problem with how this ended nor did I find it unrealistic. Ellie would have no doubt warned them of how dangerous it was, even if the events of the first two movies weren't widely known. Which I'm sure they were.
@@PittsburghSportsFan43 Well, regardless, I still think the ending felt kind tacked on. I felt that movie ended too quickly without any real build to get to it, but then again, I though the whole film lacked build and good pacing.
I'm pretty sure Billy was supposed to die originally. I suspect that Billy was originally supposed to be a Biosyn spy working with Alan to get insider info on Ingen. The elated look on his face when he sees Udesky die and the look on his face when he steals the eggs suggest to me that he was supposed to be an antagonist that would have been redeemed through his death. But when they scrapped that plot thread and he became a protagonist they had to tack on that he survived. This is all speculation on my part, but I don't think it's too unlikely given that we know they started shooting without a finished script.
Still get that bloody ringtone stuck in my head just thinking about it.

One of my favorite dinosaur movies!,good job oilver!
1 & 3 are my favorite of the franchise
I'm a simple man. I see an Oliver Harper Retrospective, I give it a like.

Still the best of the sequels.
Easily one of my favorite guilty pleasure films from when I was a kid. Terrible film, but fun.
This is quite a fun movie but the major problem is the lack of any interesting or likable characters other than Alan. There isn't even a large enough cast for their to be many fun deaths.
That and they killed ALL the redshirts off in the first dino encounter.
Jackeroose98 isn't there a dinosaur called Gigantosaurus that is bigger and 'badder' than T-Rex? Spinosaurus mostly ate fish I believe.
Grant and Sattler totally hooked up, you can't tell me otherwise JPIII!
This movie may have been terrible, but at least it had the balls to show some pretty graphic deaths. Jurassic World hid all of the good stuff behind trees and camera angles.
gnarkillguch yeah, that british girls death was so tame. /s
chris passama it was pretty cartoony.
gnarkillguch Jurassic world was micheal bays handjob vision of JP
chris passama it was actually pretty affective, but yeah the one that terrified me in jp3 was the Spinosaur snatches kooper and that was the only scene that was pretty graphic
Thank you for explaining why I love this movie!
Well articulated, very knowledgeable and the pacing is amazing. I hope you'll also do retrospectives for JW, JWFK and upcoming JW Dominion.
Oliver all of your videos are amazing, thank you for all your work!
I loved the Spino in this. Aside from Dinosaur, T-Rex was always portrayed as the big mighty predator of dino movies. It's in a way exciting to see a predator that's bigger, stronger and a lot meaner. This was a good decision so its not a repeat of the first 2 movies.
I'm amazed that the absurdity of the kid surviving for eight weeks on his own isn't even mentioned.
Henderson Productions Cool I'm a fan of your work on youtube.
Thanks for digging up those old ads sir!
No problem. I've been doing so since I love JPIII. I hope to find more if possible.
William H Macy plays Ned Flanders... you got me good XD
"Allen" Haha that always got me lol
The first JP movie is still my favorite! Great Review Oliver!
Short-haired Téa Leoni looks like Tom Cruise. :D
She's such a terrible actress.
BirdsElopeWithTheSun She was good in Deep Impact, but that's the only other film I know her for, she was insufferable in JP3 for sure though.
Back from work, dinner is ready and you uploaded a new vid. Great :)
People diss on the dream scene, but the series' lowest point was seeing Malcom's daughter swinging on that pole and kicking that raptor.
Techno-mage Right? Gymkata was used in a JP movie. What was Spielberg thinking?
People go on and on about the gymnastics scene. It's one scene, in an all-round thrilling survival adventure. Let it lie. TLW's a great film.
Alan!
Hi Oliver, can you do a retrospective review of The Mask?
Personally I love Jurassic Park 3, maybe it's because it was the first Jurassic Park I saw but I has always been my favourite Jurassic Park film and one of my favourite films.
This film doesn't get enough love! ❤
I don't get why
Because i like JP3 so much
I just think it was the best one in the series
It is the best entry after part 1 no sequel will ever come close. I think it is 1 of the most underrated movies of all time.
There's just something really missing from this one, the sense of adventure isn't really there, it's more of a monster movie than a adventure movie with monster elements. It just seems very lazily wrote and rushed, it's actually quite dark in tone compared to the first two.
Do you think Billy's rescue was a last minute addition in response to test screening feedback? It comes across as an afterthought......
33:08 What is the name of that song?
They should've made Eric into Grant and Sattler son, cause then the audience would instantly care and we wouldn't need the kirby's.
Great stuff as always.
"The movie was mostly shot on sound stages and back lots."
It definitely shows
The final set piece when the Raptors surrounded them does look like a set probably due to the rushed schedule and constant script changes.
Spielberg is never in auto pilot. Lost World is so underrated.
Exactly. Don't understand the hatred it gets (inb4 someone mentions the gymnastic scene cause that somehow is the most implausible thing to happen in the series and ruins the whole movie).
Casual Gaming lost world is trash and Spielberg knows it. He did it for a quick buck.
irishfish Spielberg didn't want someone else to make the sequel, but unfortunately he seemed not to give a shit, it's such a lacklustre film.
I love the action scenes in Lost World.
AlexTheMenace what do you mean somehow?
Great review as always Oliver. Keep up the good work.
Don Davis should do more film scores. He's incredible.
he did the score for the matrix movies
Actually a retrospective of the matrix trilogy would be awesome!
The laboratory scene is an interesting plot point that was part of the 2nd book (The Lost World), which Spielberg completely ignored, along with most of the plot of the book. I appreciate that they lifted a lot of scenes from both books for JP3, but they should have been in the 2nd movie, not this one.
Good Review as always Oliver. I liked JURASSIC PARK III. It was no classic but it worked as good entertainment, as you say.
Another great review! I love these retrospectives/reviews!
I give it 2.5/5
Retrocade Podcast
I'd give it 3.5 out of 5
It's not that bad
Retrocade Podcast I think the navy turn up in the first book. A lot of this film was just piecing together bits from the books that hadn’t yet been used
to me Jurassic park 3 is better than the lost world and the first film
Jurassic world and fallen kingdom
I think they completely missed the opportunity of using the jp3 logo again for Jurassic world dominion
*Come home from work, go to youtube, "Jurassic Park III (2001) Retrospective" uploaded 1 hour ago*
Thank you, Raptor jesus
Assiman
He went extinct for your sins.
Never understood the amount of hate this movie gets, I really like it.
What was the music for the outro? That was perfect!
27:43 i was sure Alan tried to replicate the calling for help (from non-existing army to save them aka bluffing them) to scare the raptors away.
I lost my suspension of disbelief the second that raptor on the plane said "Alan!"
It was a dream sequence. XD
Awesome, you've reviewed the whole trilogy.
Great work, Oliver! Always love your retrospectives!
How did grant get the phone back Near the end to call for help? Did the spino up chuck it or did he find another? I forget
they found it in the crap of the dinosaur.
love you're videos keep them coming 10/10
