Thank you, these clips are great! It will probably surprise a lot of people to learn the origin of so many common phrases in everyday vernacular. The only thing that would make this perfect would be to see the years in which these films came out. Again, they're great.
And this short shows us the depth of Hollywood's impact on American pop culture for almost a century. I knew every line. It's amazing the things that get stored away in your head.
4:38 My dad uses that joke on me ALL the time! "Are you surely (Shirley)?" he'd say whenever he has the chance. I've learned to to get fooled by it, yet he STILL does it! He's such a goof, but I love him! XD
AFI needs to update their list with newer memorable quotes from films in the past several years. examples: "I sure wish I knew how to quit you." -Brokeback Mountain "This is Sparta!" -300 "I drink your milkshake! I drink it up!" -There Will Be Blood "Call It Friendo." -No Country For Old Men "This city deserves a better class of criminal, and I'm gonna give it to them." -The Dark Knight "It's a Bingo!" -Inglourious Basterds
That film was directed by the late actress and filmmaker Penny Marshall, who as you know became famous for her role as Laverne DeFazio in the long-running TV comedy series "Laverne and Shirley", which ran from 1976 to 1983. Miss Marshall directed several successful Hollywood films during her career, and when she made this movie in 1992, she became the first woman in history ever to direct a film that grossed more than 100 million dollars in the U. S. box office. She became an inspiration and role model for female filmmakers around the world. It's been less than a year now since Penny Marshall passed away on Dec. 17. She succumbed to diabetes at the age of 75. Miss Marshall was a brilliant comic genius, both on TV and in the movies. A true master of her craft. The woman may be gone but her memory and legacy will be with us forever. May be rest in peace.
"I'm the king of the world!" should actually be higher IMO, a lot higher. You can mock it all you want, but that scene may be the best use of that line. Even over The Simpsons.
and here's a few more: "Gentlemen, you had my curiosity but now you have my attention."-DJango Unchained "Do I look like I'm Negotiating?"-Michael Clayton "Don't take that kind of shit from it! Don't let it know you're scared!"-Backdraft "You Shall Not Pass!!!"- Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring "I'm the Police! King Kong Ain't Got Shit On Me!"-Training Day "You best start believing in ghost stories, Ms. Turner. You're in one!"-Pirates of the Carribean
@jakehr3 well, some of them were started by these movies. the fact that they have been added to common vernacular shows that they were really good lines.
In the future, the AFI should include these movie quotes to their list when they start a new list: " He's the hero Gotham deserves but not the one it needs right now."- The Dark Knight "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility."-Spiderman "You want him to chop me up and feed me to the poor? Is that what you want."-The Departed "Why So Serious?"-The Dark Knight "You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger."-Inception
The AFI really need to update this list. Do the Right thing, Groundhog Day, Clerks and the Big Lebouski have some of the best new movie quotes, and aren't on the list.
@ThaddeusRobe i think the 'Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary" is more iconic than "o captain, my captain!" simply b/c the first quote was essentially the base of the entire movie - they needed to become GREAT. and they did, in their small ways. so i think that's why that quote was chosen - it basically is the whole movie. but the 'o captain, my captain!' is a great line too ;)
I have somewhat mixed opinions for the 2001: Space Odyssey at #78, "Open the pod-bay doors, Hal". He repeats this a couple of times before Hal finally responds, which probably made it more significant, but I feel that Hal's Quote after that, "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that." was better, more dramatic and sinister
No. 93: Why are some quotes presented only as quotes on the screen, instead of the film clip that contains the quote? "Auntie Mame" and "Knute Rockne" are two examples.
it's the list according to the AFI starting with 100. Hopkins, Forrest Gump and OF COURSE Casablanca are lower on the list because they are more famous. Check out part 2 for the others
Come on guy! I can't believe there's not a single quote from Simple Jack. "Your boy's different." "His IQ is five." "You m..m..m.m.m.make me happy."-Tugg Speedman "Wake up Hop-Hop!"-Tugg Speedman
@blckbooty GWTW has two even more famous lines that I'm sure will rank in the top 10 or 20 -- "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn!" and "After all, tomorrow is another day!"
@sakura5739 It's not about his name actually, he's making a "cruel" joke. Ed McMahon introduced Johnny Carson on The Late Show by saying "Heeere's Johnny!" for years. Jack was trying to scare her so when he had enough room to pop his face in he introduced himself that way. I admit it doesn't make a lot of sense if you aren't familiar with the show, but rest assured, that's what he's referring to.
Good grief, if an axe murderer who'd just cut the door down and took the time to stand there and announce himself, I'd cut his head off before the last syllable
Anton never actually says "Call it, friendo." that's a misquotation based on the cut of the trailer, the actual quotes are "What business is it of yours where I'm from, friendo?" and later "Call it." Also, Hans says "That's a bingo!" Not "It's a bingo"
Really, that's it? What about "I drink your milkshake!", "That's a bingo!", "Are you not entertained?", "The D is silent" or "Your best friend sued you for $600 million."
When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk- -the good the bad and the ugly The Horror, the horror-Apocalypse Now Nobody will hire you-Tootsie Everybody could list dozens more
"Louie, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." It's astonishing how many great quotes came from Casablanca.
"He's looking at you, kid".
Tombstone "I'm your huckleberry" needs to be on this list.
"You ain't heard nothing yet" came from the first sound movie?
That's kind of awesome
oh the irony in the line 'wait a minute...you ain't heard nothin yet!!"
4:38 My dad uses that joke on me ALL the time!
"Are you surely (Shirley)?" he'd say whenever he has the chance.
I've learned to to get fooled by it, yet he STILL does it! He's such a goof, but I love him! XD

"I'm a man."
"Well, nobody is perfect."
Best line ever!
Best comedy ever!
IT'S ALIVE!!!
"There's no crying in BASEBALL!"
God I love that movie!

Fantastic work!
'McLovin bailed!!'-gold.
@zippypaboob I always thought it'd be, "Dead or alive, you're coming with me."
"I'm the king of the world!" should actually be higher IMO, a lot higher. You can mock it all you want, but that scene may be the best use of that line. Even over The Simpsons.
Damn I really wanted to hear that music that plays after the line from Chinatown
Ahaha 7:14 (#64) Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room! LOLLLL!!
how smart and original of you :]
4:55 (spits out soylent green) WHAAAAAAA!?

"Gentlemen, you had my curiosity but now you have my attention."-DJango Unchained
"Do I look like I'm Negotiating?"-Michael Clayton
"Don't take that kind of shit from it! Don't let it know you're scared!"-Backdraft
"You Shall Not Pass!!!"- Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
"I'm the Police! King Kong Ain't Got Shit On Me!"-Training Day
"You best start believing in ghost stories, Ms. Turner. You're in one!"-Pirates of the Carribean
YOU WANNA PLAY ROUGH ? OK..SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND !!
They're here still scares the crap out of me.
@jakehr3 well, some of them were started by these movies. the fact that they have been added to common vernacular shows that they were really good lines.
RIP Leslie Nielson. Surely you shall be missed...and we'll never stop calling you Shirley =)
That one might be number 1 on the most miquoted movie lines of all time... but yes the proper quote needs to be on this list
Got a new one for the list: "Why So Serious?" from The Dark Knight...

In the future, the AFI should include these movie quotes to their list when they start a new list:

Whoo
The AFI really need to update this list. Do the Right thing, Groundhog Day, Clerks and the Big Lebouski have some of the best new movie quotes, and aren't on the list.
@LH287 i thot AFI were going to do the 'yo Adrian! we did it!' cuz i thot it was more iconic.. o well
Some of these could have been in "The 100 Cheesiest Movie Quotes of All Time." Like "Hasta la vista, baby." and "You had me at hello." Lol
Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club
Isn't the joke with "Who's on first" the story that Raymond keeps on telling all the time? (Rain Man)
dang the jazz singer is high up on here
What year was Dracula made? I'm talking about the original, not the Bram Stoker's Dracula remake in 1992.
I feel like I saw all those movies in 20 minutes lol
@ThaddeusRobe i think the 'Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary" is more iconic than "o captain, my captain!" simply b/c the first quote was essentially the base of the entire movie - they needed to become GREAT. and they did, in their small ways. so i think that's why that quote was chosen - it basically is the whole movie. but the 'o captain, my captain!' is a great line too ;)
Forget it guys, It's AFItown

No. 93: Why are some quotes presented only as quotes on the screen, instead of the film clip that contains the quote? "Auntie Mame" and "Knute Rockne" are two examples.
Cause he couldn't find the clip or didn't have the rights
it's the list according to the AFI starting with 100. Hopkins, Forrest Gump and OF COURSE Casablanca are lower on the list because they are more famous. Check out part 2 for the others

Anton never actually says "Call it, friendo." that's a misquotation based on the cut of the trailer, the actual quotes are "What business is it of yours where I'm from, friendo?" and later "Call it."
Also, Hans says "That's a bingo!" Not "It's a bingo"
IT'S IN THE HOLE. IT'S IN THE HOLE.
"Hasta la vista Babe" LOL
it should be "go ahead, make my day" in dirty harry
@Becca300 I know but Raymond tells the story all the time, that's what I wanted to say.
@Jellyfish60 / DRACULA ? i think
I found it a bit odd that you begun the video for "movie quotes" with a clip from a silent film :L
4:23=totally me! XD
Really, that's it? What about "I drink your milkshake!", "That's a bingo!", "Are you not entertained?", "The D is silent" or "Your best friend sued you for $600 million."
