Such an amazing, beautiful aircraft. Ahead of its time as really. Last put eyes on her about twenty years ago. Glad it is getting the love it disserves.

Kermit - Great video. It brought back tons of memories of Tom Schrade and the S-38. I flew with Tom (separate airplanes) in APR 2010 all over the Caribbean including Haiti. Then I had the good fortune to meet him again later that year at Oshkosh as he struggled to get the plane off the runway with the collapsed landing gear. It was a nice reunion to see him again and was able to sit in the S-38 during the airshow. Perfect seats!! I may have to give Brent a shout and see if I can see the ol girl again.
Cool mention of the Carnauba film. I ran sonar to search for the original SC Johnson S-38 in Indonesia and helped with underwater shots for the film. I also wonder how Dugan Rosalini is doing.
Will be awesome to see this airframe in the air again.

I'm getting caught up on all your new videos my house burned down here in socal I've been busy lol. So refreshing to see these beautiful planes Kermit the one video with the Sikorsky you let the winner pick a ride in is a weeks classic when you left the windows open and got drenched I laughed so hard with you all I felt like I was actually there lol thank you for sharing these it's awesome

Kermit is blessed to still be able to pass his medical and get insurance to fly. Once you hit age 70+, obstacles to flying get daunting. 🤠

If you read the book "I Married Adventure" by Osa Johnson I believe Martin Johnson flew the S-38 in Africa and Osa Johnson flew the S-39 in their African adventures. .

One of EAA's magazines had a large article of this S-38 about 25 years ago, about how it was restored then.

I was just at the Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum in Chanute Kansas. They had some pictures of them with their planes. It would be cool for you and the museum to work out a showing of them when it gets done.

I remember seeing a zebra-striped S-38 during my first trip to Oshkosh back in 2003. I even have a bad photo of it. I'm assuming, maybe wrongfully, that this is the same one. The Johnson one I see often because I live in the area. It's in the glass building shown in the photo and you can see it from the roadway.
Carnauba wax was a big money maker for the Johnson's Wax company. The S-38 served as one of their corporate aircraft. 🤠
Hey Kermit, good question bad answer. The difference between a Cessna 180 and 185 is horsepower. The 180 came with a 230 hp Continental O-470. The 185 came with a 300 hp Continental IO-520.

I have 2 questions because I am clueless to this but have my own theories...
1. How many refurbs/rebuilds, etc. do you currently have going on outside of your facility?
2. Why does the refurbs/rebuilds, etc. take so long? Is it access to people who can do this type of work, cost, sourcing of parts, etc?
There must be quite a backlog.
My guess is Kermit puts holds on working on projects for financial reasons. When a hold is put on a project, the people that these (usually one or two person shops) move on to other projects or jobs. This particular project I know was put on hold because of Kermit's new plan for Fantasy of Flight. Bret even said he's moving to a new location, probably to reduce his costs. Kermit made a video like four years ago saying it would be ready to fly to Oshkosh that year. My guess is that it won't be completed anytime soon. Especially with his new plan for Fantasy of Flight as well as saving money for that venture. It's pretty obvious that the restorer doesn't have the staff to complete it. My guess is that it ends up at Fantasy of flight on a truck to never be completed in airworthy condition.
@@russellfreeman9074 I understand the financial aspect of it, but hard for me to understand the desire to still want to complete a project after the durations I have seen on some of these projects. I mean projects still from Hurricane Andrew? 31 years ago...That is why I was wondering if it was lack of qualified people or access to parts.
Kermit mentioned in the video (and when talking elsewhere about another project) that it is due to hangar space at FoF he does not press on finishing some projects, especially the larger planes. He had to get several planes out of their containers, due to leaking / rusting and rotting. Additionally (depending on restorer‘s shop) if someone else wants a project done swiftly, it is nice to have another project on the backburner, one you can work on and off depending as the other project proceeds (waiting for parts, hardware etc.). There are lots of reasons why projects are taking decades to finish. BTW you don‘t want a project fast, you want it to be perfect.
Some of these project planes have been around since the 1980's..some have been started on, some finished, some still in process, some not even started on. Kind of like old car collections. I think I would think about either selling off some of the ones I realistically thought/knew I would likely never start/complete to help fund the ones that are under construction already and near completion...or even sell off some of those if it were not ones I really, really liked. Personally, as someone who likes really rare and uncommon stuff, I would sell off most or all the more common aircraft, and stop buying more projects, especially all the wood and fabric stuff...I would have started that Kawasaki KI-61 decades ago, and just focus on stuff like that, the B-26 Marauder, F3F, WW2 fighters, get the B-24 airworthy again...but that's just me...our lifetimes are finite, and projects that take up decades eat our lifetime up quicker than we realize...@@darkredvan

I have pics of the S-38 from Oshkosh in 2010. I had never heard of the aircraft before, and was just awestruck by it! Might be the most novel aircraft I've ever seen!

Thanks for deleting my comment. It just proves that honesty makes some people uncomfortable. Kermit, you calling COVID a "scam-demic" is blatant disrespect for the over ONE MILLION Americans that died from it, including my late wife who died at age 38, only four days after our 18th wedding anniversary. I lost the love of my life and our kids lost their mother. "Scam-demic" indeed. 💔
Yeah. That was certainly a rather disappointing thing to hear and is extremely disrespectful to those who have lost loved ones and friends.

Have you ever wondered why so many of the Americans who died during the height of the pandemic were also the ones who most strongly disagreed with the science behind the pandemic and the preventative measures?
Yeah, I picked up on that one too. Don't know whether Kermit was just rambling at the time, as he was just going into the building and not thinking. But a video edit could have avoided this situation and avoided hurting some peoples feelings. The focus is on the FoF fleet. So taking out the comment is going to be more positive than negative.
I come from New Zealand, a country pretty isolated from the larger continents and only 5 million population. That worked in our favour.

I lost the love of my life at 41 (about15 years ago now), (due to other causes) ,but after 2 years, when I was ready, I forgave her for 'leaving' early and that seemed to lift a weight off my shoulders. In time, (and there is no limit to how long it takes) you may find your own way to ease the pain. I wish you the best of luck. Kiwi David.

Osa was a stunning woman. The airplane looks beautiful. Still alot of work to go; One last push! Get 'r Done! My father told me stories of when he was a boy, he use to ride his bicycle to Peter O'night Field, he would sit in the cockpit and grab the wheel. Just one of my fathers' aviation stories.

The Sikorsky S-38 a.k.a. the flying collection of parts. Charles Lindbergh was good friends with Igor Sikorsky. Lindbergh flew this airplane. Many of the S-38's were sold to Pan Am.
I can see Leonardo climbing out of the cockpit, walking along the nose and jumping off onto the beach in The Aviator.

They is the last Beverley bomber in a derelict fort in paull near hull in the uk that as far as I no is the very last one to exist it’s needs saving they is some clips on u tube if u look they are rumours about cutting it up and that’s not right and it’s still there

Interesting content. If I might make a suggestion, a separate mike for Brent would have been very helpful. It was difficult to hear a lot of his commentary.
These are done on the fly as I’m traveling, as a courtesy to my followers. I don’t pack production equipment for my trips, beyond the camera and batteries, and my primary purpose is visiting my project, so I don’t take the time to mic or light everything in a professional production manner. I prefer the you are there with me, fly on the wall approach. Hope you understand.

You have it reversed. Carnauba wax enabled the S-38 to discover Africa and South America. 🤔🤨 🤑

Damn, this is the first I'm hearing of Paul's departure. I guess there was no way to split his time between Embry Riddle and FoF?
If you watch the Bf108 restoration #25 (just before this one), Paul announces it at the very end of the video. Yes, it's a bit sad, but he may teach the classes and 1 of those may become the new go to for WWII plane restorations expert. As Kermit say, pass it forward. I think he said he might pop in to FoF occasionally.
