This game is the genesis of all of Cage's writing tropes and sins. - Interesting Vertical slice mystery - Multiple playable characters one being a cop - pointless forced romance because boy and girl need to be together - weird racism and poor depictions of the mentally ill - the noble homeless - kids as props
Loved the insanity of this game for years and watching the RTVS crew experience it was great. Always remember folks, the point of the game, despite all the weird plots is to slam dunk a autistic child into disco lava to learn the secrets of the universe.
"Ignoring the QTE when you're obviously hallucinating" might actually be the most clever idea a David Cage game has ever had. Of course, when the entire rest of the experience is such utter dogshit, it's hard to want to give credit to the little things.
I wish it made sense though. The entirety of the house attacking him scene was a hallucination, yet if you fail those QTEs Lucas kills himself. Same with the bugs, in a previous scene. I don't get how the player is supposed to figure out ignoring the bugs THIS time won't kill him, when it does every other time
Cage is on the cusp of a passible writer, like he has ideas that are good, but his ego and shittyness has to infect it all. Detroit for all the shit is like 1/3rd (give or take) a good game, connor and hank are fun, markus has some really good scenes, kara.......the actors were great. everything else.........not so much.
"cusp of a plausible writer" is honestly the best description i have seen. some of these games have really cool basic concepts, but he completely goes off the rails and loses the original plot everytime, (+adds a bunch of uncomfortable shit) so it feels like a completely different game by the end

That's because Quantic Dream at the time was genuinely running out of money to make the game and thus, everything David Cage wanted to add to the story had to be cut out. Lord knows what he wanted to add to the game.

It's my favorite because it exposes to what degree David Cage really is an absolute hack. Like, despite having an entire mechanic dedicated to "Mental Elf" and managing it for the main characters, when time comes to depict the actually mentally unwell, the game wastes no time treating them like bloodthirsty velociraptors who would apparently kill a woman for literally no reason.
Anyone else here an old “Switcher/Super Best Friends Play” fan? I was for a long time, starting at their machinima days. So this group of friends and their vibe and commentary feels super familiar to my old favorite channel. Appreciate these guys to no end

the thing that’s so funny about this game is how fast and how hard it goes off the rails. it could’ve just been a subpar game about a guy who has hallucinations that cause him to kill someone, then okay, sure, he sometimes has visions of the future okay whatever. then BAM evil internet beings BAM weird depictions of autistic people BAM homeless people cult BAM worlds funniest psychic fight scene when they said the game went insane at the end i was expecting like. the main character having a hallucination of a world ending event or something, NOT… ALL THAT. also, another really funny thing about this game is that i tried to watch this highlights video 3 separate times, and each time i fell asleep before any of the weird stuff past the visions happened. so imagine my horrified surprise when i woke up one day after falling asleep with this video autoplaying, and realized that the funny game about a guy who killed a man in a diner bathroom had a flying matrix fight scene.
Ive rewatched this dozens of times in the last, like, month. Learning of this game’s existence has fundamentally altered my brain chemistry. Something about this video lives rent free in my mind. It’s so enthralling in its insanity.
It’s explained by the German historian at the museum (it goes by super fast so I don’t blame folks for missing it) but Oracles need a proxy in order to enact sacrifices.
