  • Single cut ring from a full slab Horse Chestnutt tree and some water pipe bent into legs made into a coffee table. The live edge has some excellent features and the top has some wonderful heavy spalting. A great piece of furniture that turned out looking great.
Always nice to get hands on with real wood rather than the usual pallets even though this didnt need much work.
This tree was taken down some years ago and cut up and then left where it fell, Im almost positive it was an old Horse Chestnutt, why it wasnt taken away for firewood after cutting Im not sure. The church warden called round with a piece as he knew I take an interest in woodworking and thought I could make something of it.
The first job was to let it dry out and its spent about 6 months in the workshop fairly close to the woodstove. It grew an interesting fungus during this time as well.
I used an electric planer to level the slab as best I could and then went at it with a angle grinder and 80 grit flap disk. Be careful and fairly gentle, they are very aggressive and as the wood was soft it dug in in a few places.
A final sanding with the finishing sander gave me a good enough surface to continue.

There were a number of holes, some damage and a large natural void running through the wood and I used a mixture of polyester resin, colour dye, glitter and some glow in the dark powder to fill them in which has added some nice highlights without being over powering. This was then sanded back to a smooth finish.
The final coats were done with Sadolin PV67, a two part high gloss and hard wearing varnish. With the porous nature of the wood it took many coats, and Im thinking it may needs some more to achieve a smooth glass top like finish.

I made the legs from 1 and a quarter inch water pipe from a skip/dumpster at a renovation, its good solid pipe with a decent wall thickness and very strong. Using the sand and water method in the pipe bender I bent them into shape, cut them down with the evo saw and welded them onto 2 inch plate strips about 3mm thick.

I tried out the 'bluing' technique on the steel to give them colour. Heating them up with the propane roofing torch and quenching in a small tray of waste oil. Having spoken to a couple of metal workers they recommend repeating the process about 3 times for each leg. Something to remember for next time.

So far I haven't coated the legs in anything else for a longer lasting rust free finish and shine. People have recommended ClearKote by Ronseal, others just plain car lacquer.
Thank you for watching, Im still recovering and doing well and Im able to share some projects that have been too long sat on the computer.
All the best and warmest regards
