It's funny because even though the pairing itself started from a fanfiction called "Earthworm Zim", Zim had barely anything to do with Mordecai and Twilight's relationship, much less a lot of the stuff that happened in the story.

The Airplanes meme? I'm not sure myself either. To be honest, I don't get why there have been a lot of artists in the 2010s that remade that Airplanes art and then also act like it (the actual pairing itself) is the worst thing in the world. But I guess that's the irony bit of it?
To explain how the Mordecai x Twilight pairing got started is really simple: they had a really nice friendship in a (somewhat popular at the time on DeviantArt) fanfiction, and there was one scene where Mordecai is consoling Twilight from a heartbreak. The fic's called "Earthworm Zim" BTW, in case anyone's curious.
