You might have seen this lip gloss phenomenon on social media. I figured it must me static electricity. So had a go a reproducing the effect using electrostatics.

No it's not upside down! Hopefully after watching this video you wouldn't think that was the explanation anyway, but a lot of the comments on the original videos were saying it was filmed upside down. I wish that were the true explanation! Sadly, lip gloss is too viscous to drip in that way. It needs to be pushed... by electricity. The sponsor of this video is Blinkist. The reason why it was working on the videos but not for you might be that the lip gloss becomes charged whilst being jostled against fabric in a pocket?

I think I know where the static charge comes from. My wife used to sit with her feet resting on top of her desktop computer (tower model) while using her computer. Whenever I touched her skin I could feel a slight tingle. We investigated this and the tingle was present iff she was touching the computer, so we figured that her computer must not have been properly grounded.
I think that in all the videos demonstrating the effect the person demonstrating it are touching their computer at the same time. (Not nessecarily conciously!)

I got this same behaviour out of hydraulic fluid and measuring stick. The hydraulic fluid would spike out like that as a tiny spike on the side of the measuring stick. I didn't take video out of it but maybe I should have. I thought it was caused by a tiny cavity in the stick and it somehow getting pressurized and when I pulled the stick out of the tank, it would cause that effect when the air bubbles out of that tiny cavity.

also if thier body hydration levels are low.. it would allow them to build up even more static charge? I think he is also right.. he should warm up the lip gloss.. bring it up to 90 something degrees, which would allow the seperation from static charge to take effect.. I think also some lip glosses now put little metal flakes in it .. and this too would allow for seperations to occur under high static charge conditions?

I recently watched a video about making ice crystals and specifically why snowflakes have long dendritic growth patterns. Its not super related to this in what's actually happening, but it reminded me of it when you were mentioning the positive feedback loop on the bit thats sticking out. How the charge builds up there, and makes it grow in sort of a dendrite shape. its similar in snowflakes that once a little bit of ice is able to stick out past the rest, it starts basically a positive feedback loop allowing more ice and more smaller dendrites to form off of it. Not directly related of course, and i've probably got it all wrong anyway haha. But cool video!

I'm guessing that your results differ from the viral videos because it has to do with the humidity in the air. If you're in a dry area the charges build much more easy. Where I am it's very cold out, (-30) in a non humidified building with warmed air that has some exchange with the outside, the relative humidity can be in the single digits. The static discharges can be intense! Even in the cold getting gas you have to be sure to ground yourself to the car before grabbing a gas pump handle when getting gas or risk igniting the escaping gas vapor. Maybe try in a dehumidified room?

I think you are on to something here. I get this effect often when doing my laundry in a basement with two drying rooms.
When I fill softener into the tray on top of the machine and the bottle is almost empty, you hold it upside down to get the last of it out and when the strands get very thin, they start to fly away all over the top of the machine, making a mess.

for an organic in the wild phenomenon my guess is that the lip gloss container is glass and it is kept in a silk bag. Glass and silk being a common static charge demonstration and common materials for those two objects. A high static charge could build up on the container and lip gloss itself rather than being transferred from the person holding it

So it wasn’t until after I saw your video that this happened to me, and I was really excited. I couldn’t re-create it the first time, but today I did it again and I was able to catch it on camera. I’m finding that the best way to do it is to kind of drag the applicator tip against the edge of the hole as you’re bringing it out, and bring it out relatively quickly. I think it also helps if you haven’t done it in a while, because it seems like the charge kind of “stabilizes” (for lack of a better word) after a few minutes and stops working as well. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think his point was you wouldn't get such a strong charge build-up on the pointy bits of the lip gloss vs the smoother rounded bits, if lip gloss was a good conductor.
With the aluminium dishes, they are just repelling each other & the VdG gen, it has little-to-nothing to do with any extra charge building up on their edges.

3:30 I still remember that one time I apparently was so charged that my finger made a noise similar to cracking ones knuckles, and I felt pain in the joint from what I assume is a very quick-n-temporary displacement of it. And that other time that got close, where me and a friend had apparently managed to get polar-opposite static charges when shuffling (so we kept on doing it), and when we touched fingers one time a loud and visible spark appeared even centimeters apart that again, actually managed to get painful (though I dont think it got to the same level as that one I mentioned prior, as the joints didnt make that noise, werent in as much pain, and I felt less displacement.)
